Weekly poll: is the HMD Skyline your next phone?

21 July 2024
Nokia N9 fans took notice, the hot pink colorway drew even more attention. And it's easy to repair too? Unfortunately, there is a catch.

The specs and software support for this price are simply deal breakers.
And the fact that you can get a realme GT 6T or even the oneplus nord 4 at similar price to this.
Is anyone actually going to skip those great offerings and go for this, just for the sake of repairability ,when you just have to slap a case and screen protector to avoid breaking your phone, so that you won't need repairability

Specs are great but chipset would have been better. 7300/7350/7200 Ultra or 7s Gen 3/7 Gen 3/7+ Gen 2 would have been better chipset cuz 7s Gen 2 is basically 6+ Gen 1 or Overclocked 6 Gen 1 with downgrade LPDDR5 Ram instead of LPDDR5X Ram which is 2022 SoC 2 years old. So, same ISP not good for this price range.

Dimensity 7300 could be an option but from one of the employee's tweet, my guess is this phone was cooked when HMD barely released anything after X30. I recall last year they bothered with G42 and Europe version of XR21

For me this is an all rounder phone that HMD used to release back in 2017. That was the time they don't even bother disclosing Corning level but my Nokia 5 was tough as heck. Now I'm wondering if I should get black back and combine it with cyan/yellow/pink frame

I wish more companies cared about the performance of their software like they do. A dated 22nm Unisoc chip working without hiccups and hitches in framerate, on the latest Android version? Sign me up! This should be the norm, but unfortunately it isn't.

Someone got this phone and did some camera test. auto mode is pretty impressive considering HMD tends to botched that up on 9PV, 8.3 and X30. I'm waiting for the same person to do manual capture, which 8.3, 9PV and 8.3 excels at. Hopefully the new camera app ditched the Lumia dial on pro control as it's pretty hard to use on sensors with granular option

I'm wondering if HMD bothers with SD Express support on microSD slot since they bothered to get Qi2. Maybe you guys can test it. Heard OZO Playback got extra settings too, which is neat

And the Nokia 6 was nearly 4 years old when the Note 8 was introduced.
The Nokia 5.3 that used to compete with the Redmi Note 8 had the same chipset, and was much cheaper in most countries.

I've experienced this with my parents' Nokia C32 phones. HMD has optimized full Android 14 to work well with a rather dated 22nm Unisoc processor, whereas a typical Samsung, Xiaomi or other phones at this price basically lags, stutters and freezes. The performance is better on G series Unisoc phones, given that they have UFS storage with decent chipsets.

I'm yet to see any non-HMD low end working well for day to day use. Even Motorola devices with the rebranded FunTouch UI and Pixel icons, tend to be unusable at times.

Minu, 21 Jul 2024"Bad" phones are simply low ends. And more often than not, unless they use a Unisoc (and the more recent Unisoc chips are at least not that bad) or a Snapdragon 680, they're not laggy, at least on paper. The key issue here with snappiness nowadays is almost always down to unoptimised, laggy UI. I think that unless you're looking at the sub-$150 market, hardware is almost never the reason why this happens, though I have also seen a few very good phones at this price range that don't have insufficient hardware as well.

At the same time, I'd like to see a Nokia-branded alternative from HMD, but fixing upon the compromises of this phone.
