I was really hoping for a 19,5:9 xperia 5 vi. I think many upgrade to the 1 vi because of the more practical aspect ratio, I dont think people changed their opinions on size that much in only a year

Had high hopes for compact flagship, with top camera, for the Sony 5 VI, and I think there are more out there as well. Had planed on getting one, if it were to match the Sony 1 camrea setup. But it is to bad that the latest generations of Sony 5 have been downgrading the specs into upper mid range phones.

If they are chopping the Sony 5 VI, then maybe there is to hope there will be a compact flagship cameraphone from them, in the Pro series?

Anonymous, 11 Sep 2024What? Are you implying its impossible to make phones with 8... moreYou have to look at the overall scale of operation. Sony's smartphone division isn't as big as Samsung or Xiaomi. The latter can still sell compact flagships under $1000 because they have lots of budget phones that can off-scale the losses made from the compact flagships. Sony's only answer to the budget phone market is the Xperia Ace, but it's only limited to Japan. If Sony had sold the Xperia Ace globally, it would be different.

My goal today is to find good powerful phone smallest as possible. Only "compact" option was XPERIA 5 series and it is a beasts of a phone. If they really cancel that what am I going to use in future? How about flagship phone under 5 inches?

Let's just say it's fine for a minute but they really messed up with the 10 series, A snapdragon 6 series and 60hz display for $350 is just low-key criminal. Sony needs a strong midranger and if possible an entry/budget device like the Xperia Ace they fixed a lot of problems this year if they could fix their main problem of specs per price next year then that would give them at least a general direction to take the 2025 series whatever they end up calling it (if the name/series reset rumours do materialize)

              Sincere advice to Sony:

Just improve 10 series so it fills 5 series void. Put upper midrange processor such as 7plus gen 3, put same main sensor as 1 series, put LTPO. Retain the plastic build to keep price down. Launch price £500 max.
We don't need an entry level phone from a brand like Sony. Entry level phones don't build company reputation nowadays and Sony should realize. Most people want a competent midranger, but current 10 series just isn't that, it more like an entry level phone and can't compete against Pixel A series for example. Hopefully Sony takes the advise and improves it. And no, improving it in above manner won't eat up 1 series sales because it will be a good upper midranger, but not a flagship. Those wanting flagship will still go for 1 series.

Also, put 1440p on Xperia 1VI. Good that the overkill 4k was removed but for such an expensive device at least 1440p is expected by most buyers.

We'd like like wider availability of Sony phones worldwide.

We hope Sony will continue to listen to us like they've been unlike other OEMs. The retention of headphone jacks, microSD card slots, clean UI and durable, high quality build with IP65/68 rating are the evidences. They've also introduced LTPO and a wider aspect ratio in Xperia 1VI which is something we asked for. Lets hope this time they'll also take above advice seriously which will only cement our relationship even further.

Bravosixgoingdark, 10 Sep 2024That and the fact there's no room in the 5 series to p... moreI agree that compact phones or compact-sized ones like the 5-series most of the time if not always, have to compromise or even nerf one of them if they want to trickle down the 1-series main features and save the 1-series. Physics is currently the limitation of Sony's approach. A.C. already explained it well in the options and compromises, and all of us here agreed that the Xperia 5 IV approach was the best compared to 5 III and 5 V, and the best interpretation of Xperia Z Vanilla from a modern perspective, and 5 V should have taken the 5 IV approaches (especially wireless charging fans that wanted Sony to bring that feature to smaller phone)

As for releasing the end of the year calendar, it's a quite straightforward solution to move forward, from the release from IFA-month where the 5-series or every Autumn-released Xperia used to take. However, it is also dilemmatic as we have seen in Samsung and Google with its S FE series and a series, as they suffered a lot due to their more full-fledged series released earlier than their "budget" model. A contrasting model to Sony, where the budget version, the 10-series, was released earlier than the 5-series. The only time all Xperia 1,5, and 10 series were released simultaneously was in 2021 with Mark III, and, while it was a "perfect" model of scheduling, it did make 1 III and 10 III suffer, as 5 III outshines them until the Pro-I stole it again.

Anonymous, 10 Sep 2024nobody buys sony phonesMe having 8 Sony (7 are Xperias and 1 Sony Ericsson) since 2011 and using Xperia 1 II since 2023, with plan to keep buying Xperia as long they existed: "Are you sure no one? I am here, hello".

TheSnowWinterR7, 11 Sep 2024True. I mean, Sony's last 2 CEOs echoed the same thing... moreExactly and they are likely keeping the Xperia division alive because they might choose to invest in it in the future if they ever see an opening, it's always easier to work on an existing thing than rebuild it from scratch. If 'sales' would have caused sony to pack up they would've done so years ago. It's now kinda funny that each year we see "sony almost dead" on random sony news.

I mean, Sony's last 2 CEOs echoed the same thing from 2017 and 2019 regarding the state of Xperia, keeping them to keep their technology for other divisions to work. But the people here don't even bother to listen and know the B2B does.

Xperia is Sony's very last fortress for the telecommunication technology division they had after they sold their VAIO business a decade ago, and Xperia has been both Sony's side projects and testing division for other Sony divisions such as camera sensor testing as you said for other company or even Sony Alpha division, but also the telecommunication inside their PlayStation and other electronic division. Doing the testing bed the techs with Sony Alpha would be too risky compared to doing it with Xperia.

Bravosixgoingdark, 11 Sep 2024I remember someone said hells would freeze over before sony... moreI think one of the reasons Sony upped their software update from 2 years of OS updates and 3 years of security updates in both Mark IV and V series to 3 years of OS updates and 4 years of security updates in the Mark VI series, outside the upcoming EU requirement of mandatory 5 years of OS update/security update, is also because Sharp also upped their software update since Sharp Aquos R8/R8s series launched last year (3 years of OS update and 5 years of security update). Aquos is Sony's direct Android competitor in Japan and Taiwan, so Sony has naturally lengthened its software game, too.

Thank you for this invaluable essay into where we went wrong, what we did, and how to fix it. I've sent a screenshot of your advice to the very upper echelons of Sony management and give it another year, we will implement everything you have mentioned!

Because of you, we've just sacked our consulting firm Deloitte who should have done better to advise us on this.

On behalf of team Sony, we feel extremely disappointed that something that is clearly this simple was overlooked.

Already our engineering team is working on your very ideas. If only you worked for Sony, but alas, you've probably already been snapped up by Apple's or Samsung's manufacturing team.

As I salute your incredible and revolutionary insights, as we say in Japan:

Oh no, one less overpriced remote control with no software support and mediocre camera, what we are gonna do?!

No gadget is perfect. But, if you need to wait couple of months to resolve a bug (even a small one), then is not okay at all.
For me the worse were Motorola phones. And Poco phones too. At the other end, iPhones receive the most updates and bugs are resolved the quickest.
That's because there are many people owning iPhones. So if a bug appears, immediately someone raises the flag. If you own a phone that has sold few quantities in last year, good luck waiting for some bug fix, because probably you are the only one with that problem, lol.
