No clue what your lag issues are, that is likely a hardware issue not software. Check your battery health, high cycle counts really affect iOS device performance. When I used to have a small business refurbing broken iPhones a new battery was like putting a new engine in a car, wakes it right up!
The app store itself (along with basically everything else) is baked into the OS unlike Android so you have to update to be able to use newer API's (its because of dumb widgets or watch face API's lol). On Android the system apps, play store services, security patches, etc are all separated from the OS so you don't need to update the OS to get them. Your friend is either on a severely outdated phone like iPhone 7 from a decade ago that didn't get iOS 17 or on a severely outdated OS like iOS 16 or later for that to happen. That is what happens to the jailbreak community as well, I stretched the iOS 9 jailbreak for as long as snapchat would let me!

Until today I still can't figure out how to transfer files from PC into my iPhone, via bluetooth or wired, nothing works so far. This thing is so damn difficult to use.
Also people keeps harping on how it doesn't lag. Just entering some setting takes a few seconds to load, so another lie.
And the one who tripped me into buying an iPhone is using an old iPhone. Some popular apps (and even Apple's own apps) just refuse to install on his iPhone because it doesn't have the latest update. Never seen this on Android. My old phone with Android 8 can install most apps on PlayStore.

iPhone 16's sole existence is to make the Pro model seems like a bargain. It has nerfed specs designed to force their fans to buy the Pro model.
Think about it. The upcoming iPhone SE 2025 is the same as iPhone 16 but will be sold for $499! There's no reason why iPhone 16 couldn't be sold around that price too, or perhaps for $50 more.

It is not a bad upgrade. 8gb ram current SoC. Very good battery life.
The problem is it is too expensive.
Where I am this phone costs the same as S24 ultra and Xiaomi 14 is 2/3d of its price (for 12gb/512!). So at the end it is not bad phone but really hard not to jump on the Android side once again.

In that case they should try drop the prices, at least in the EU because here the 16 is almost 1000 euro!! That's more than most peoples rent!!
In fact, in many EU countries it's an entire months wages!!

Iphone16=iphone15 plus one buton. iPhone 15=ipone14+something so unimportant that I simply forgot what. Also it’s a slight enhancement of the iPhone 13 which also is not at all different from 12.
So should we upgrade for a button?
I have also tried the AI on Samsung S24. Boring and it does things that google engine was already doing. I got bored of it after two weeks. So, again, what the customer should buy? A new button? We are not so stupid as Apple hopes.

Phones now are not really phones. They are mini computers which fit in the palm of your hand. No one upgrades their £1k laptop or computer every year so why upgrade phones every year?
These aren't cheap devices anymore like they used to be. These phones are £500 plus for a good model which still have compromises. For many people that's a lot of money and everything else including food and rent is continuing to increase. People can't upgrade like we used to and we can't pay these prices like we used to.
A phone going back 3 years is still a good phone today and many people can get last years models of phones heavily discounted.
