Another phone to prove that sensor size doesn't matter above 1/56" for general everyday usability unless you really want to prioritize real bokeh. I like it, but I don't see it as a valid selling point but hey if it can shoot video at more than ISO12,800 that'll be neat.

Anonymous, 29 Oct 2024Japanese companies do not like to work with cheap component... moreYet Sharp has been plagued with display issues for years and years.
Sharp and Sony aren't just good when it comes to quality control. They always seem to have some types of hardware-related issues, and bugs in software break features every now often.
They are no 'hidden gem' that people are trying to make them out to be. They have low sales numbers for a reason.

"Yes, it’s larger than the 1-inch type sensor we’ve seen in several flagships."
Wrong. All smartphone 4:3 1" type sensors actually are a tiny bit larger than a 1.0" type sensor.
A 1.0" type sensor has a crop factor of approximately 2.73 and has an area between approximately 120mm and 121mm².
All smartphone 1.0" type 4:3 sensors have an area between 128mm² and 129mm².
It's just marketing whether you write 1.0" or 0.98", etc. These numbers are meaningless anyway because 1.0", 0.98", etc are just the names of the sensor size type. It doesn't tell you how large the sensor really is. The diagonal of a 1.0" type sensor is NOT exactly three times as large as the diagonal of a 1/3" type sensor.

SA466, 29 Oct 2024I kind of thought of Sharp as being on their way out after ... moreThey chose this CPU because if not, the price would be like the Leica phones, very high. Sharp phones are always expensive, because if I am not wrong they use more in house components, and sometimes they make their flagships in Japan.

I kind of thought of Sharp as being on their way out after the R8, but this seems pretty competent, close enough to current flagships while still having the unique 240 Hz display. I'm just curious what made them go with the 8s Gen 3

Bot10, 29 Oct 2024They said it was larger than other flagships, not the large... morelarger than the 1 inch type we saw in flagships. bro, it doesn't take einstein to know that there are only a few phones with a 1 inch sensor and all of them are the same size. It isn't even larger, so by being larger than the 1 inchers, it'd have been the largest.

Sharp's previous generations of devices are very prone to display problems such as touch defects and white spots.
This has occurred in all models from entry to flagship.
This is deeply related to the IGZO displays manufactured in-house.
Since Sharp is discontinuing production of large displays and restructuring its small display manufacturing business, we hope that the R9Pro will be able to break the long-standing display defect problem.

jiyen235, 29 Oct 2024i understand all that but it's not like they make &quo... moreJapanese companies do not like to work with cheap components.
They would rather price products high and give best their budget can pay for than giving cheaper stuff at lower price.
Wages are super high.
Companies have own factories, no odm products.
No company from Japan can ever match lower costs from neighbor nations.
This is why Sharp, Hitachi, Panasonic and other are not as strong as 20-30 years ago.
Sony and Sharp would save significant money if using for example oled from Boe instead of Samsung/ Sharp. Easily $20, $30 or even $40 per panel.
But choose not too.

Anonymous, 29 Oct 2024Because everything in Japan cost more than SK or Cn.
High... morei understand all that but it's not like they make "the best" product either, so their phone divisions are stupidly overpriced.
Contrast that with TVs. Sony's flagship TVs are unanimously considered the best and they're always higher in price than their competitors.
These japanese phones make no sense in terms of a business venture. A loss project
