Their population is big, but Indonesia's average income per person is just $4180 according to The Economist. (Wikipedia has less useful estimates from the future in 2025)
Is the average person there really going to spend between 3 and 6 months of their income on a phone?

Solun1, 01 Nov 2024Perfect example of a soon-to-be authoritarian government. T... moreNah. Consumer's actually won't be much affected, only inconvenienced having to buy the phone from Singapore or Malaysia. Meanwhile the distributors are losing potential profits being unable to sell the phone.
The conglomerates owning the distributors will probably try to lobby the lawmakers, just like how they got the IMEI law passed. A compromise will be made.

403 Forbidden, 02 Nov 2024Samsung A35 is $399 in the US. While A35 is IDR4,999,000 =... more$315 still seems like armed robbery to me. Maybe Scamsung should face a ban in North America for selling their horrible, super-slow garbage at higher prices with misleading advertising. For $350 you can still buy a brand new, factory-sealed vanilla Pixel 7, which is an infinitely better purchase than any low-end Scamsung.

Marcusj3000, 01 Nov 2024Pixels are not even officially sold in Indonesia. I don... moreIndonesia banning iphones and pixels has nothing to do with being silk road participant being 'trapped'. It is fully because these companies do not follow rules in the country, thus being punished as such. Those who comply would not face such ban. Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo etc have no problem with local laws, only American companies have such problem because they are arrogant. One of Tte benefits of following local rules here is the locals here can buy phones at cheaper price. Samsung phones here are cheaper than in US or any neighbouring countries.

Apple sell their phones in Indonesia.
So, they may want to give attention to it. And as far as I know, they only lack about 10% of their obligation. So not a big deal.
Google however, they don't even sell phones in Indonesia. Ban us? Yeah .. please do. Like we give a sh*t.

Anonymous, 01 Nov 2024Sure, I'll build it myself and share it to everyone us... moreLet customers decide what they want to buy.
Companies never suffer but because of stupid governments customers have to suffer.
Already bought iphones are made obsolete. Is the government going to pay every customer for their phones and trouble?

Lavi, 01 Nov 2024LOOOL
this country will only sell sticks made in Indonesia... moreThe pixel is incredibly overpriced and no one except the rich show offs care about iphones.
There's a ton of other, better priced, good phones avaliable in Indonesia. Almost no one cares about these bans.

Anonymous, 02 Nov 2024Import one then You can't. The IMEI has to be whitelisted with the government, which means paying tax, which means revealing what the phone is. They won't whitelist the pixel or iPhone 16

CargoJoe, 01 Nov 2024Let's give them 3 months and see where this goes. Pixel is already not officially available here in the first place. So this "Pixel ban" won't impact much.
Can't say the same with the iPhone ban, though.

The law doesnt say that brand need to build their factory in Indonesia. They can change it with RnD etc.
And for Apple, this year there was agreement on investment around IDR 1.6 trillion on their RnD in Indonesia to fullfill those 40% requirement and till now they still not meet that agreement. That's why the goverment issues the selling.
Anybody who wants apple or google phones, still can handcarry from abroad and registered imei upon arrival. But the law restricts reselling the phones.
