01 November 2024
The reason is the same – phones need to have 40% local content.

Motorola, Sony, OnePlus etc. just don't have enough user base in Indonesia to justify foreign investment for obeying the regulations. Hence, they left.

I know many Indonesian didn't understand economy very well. Why this is good or bad. You can search youtube Prof. Richard Wolff and Jeffrey Sach talk about protectionism, and why it's bad. It's really show that Indonesian policy maker didn't understand it, and cover it up with "information act law", that anyone speak ill of their policy will be jailed.... an authoritarian moves.

*In short, protectionism create inflation, so, they "protecting" labor, "creating 1000" job, but 300 million indonesian pay extra money.

I think it's horrible that Indonesians can't be #TeamPixel but at least they can buy Sharp devices. Sharp is like the Indonesian Pixel. However I think it's hilarious that the Indonesian government bans iPhones and Pixels considering that politicians earn a salary of around 6 figures a year. I bet Indonesian politicians use 16 Pro Max or 9 Pro XL.

But now, regulation become tighter. The sales inside the country is prohibited.
If you really desperate, the only way is to buy from another country and pay import tax.
Oh, and it's strictly for personal use and the amount of device you can bring is limited.

If you have it, you can use it. You just can't buy it OFFICIALLY in the country.
                                      You can import.
You can buy it directly in another country.
But when come back, need to pay import tax and tariff (which is quite high).
As Indonesian who like tech I also have mixed feeling about the regulation, but it's not stupid.
