HANTU BLAWU, 05 Nov 2024Even though the majority want it to be banned from IndonesiaSince most of the politicians and riches here use iPhone, and second hand iPhone still has a big demand here, I don't think majority of people here want it to get banned, after all.

They literally only inject money into another company, not giving the money straight to Indonesia. And those Taiwanese are really cheapskates. Real benefit for the country would probably be not as huge as people would've thought.

If Apple cared about Indonesia, they would've set up shop in the country like the rest of SE Asian countries. Apple has stores in Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia, but not Indonesia. Ever wonder why?

If Apple wants to invest in Indonesia, it must comply with existing regulations, don't be like Sony which is no longer sold in Indonesia, Apple must pay the applicable taxes because some of All Indonesian people also pay taxes, so if a company like Apple doesn't pay taxes, it's embarrassing, companies like Samsung, even Xiaomi, Oppo, Infinix, Vivo, Realme, Poco, Techno pay taxes,
            and it requires further consideration.

nemesis8, 05 Nov 2024they have a lot of people but how many are actually buying ... moreWell you need to look it on the bigger scale.

If Apple is building a factory that probably will be a regional hub to supplier components.

Most of the neighbouring country have an official Apple store & Apple is definitely taking advantage of free trade zone around SEA region. Less cost, more money.

                    It's a strategic investment.

Anonymous, 05 Nov 2024Apple has no requirement to set up a factory in Indonesia. ... moreHow does the Indonesian government try to hold its citizens hostage?

What Indonesia asks for is simple: if you want to grab our citizens money with your overpriced status symbols by exploiting our inability to do the same with your country, then you have to give us something in return.

In this case, Indonesia asks for a local factory to create job opportunities and to keep the effects of exploitment low.

Anonymous, 05 Nov 2024So, when companies like Apple takes advantage of countries ... moreApple has no requirement to set up a factory in Indonesia. This is a country policy allowing outside companies to sell product there under certain circumstances. It's all on Indonesian government and not Apple's responsibility.

Governments often try to hold their citizens hostage from companies in ordered to persuade them to give them money and/or economic boosts.

I like how Chinese phone companies take advantage of opportunities in emerging countries to invest and gain market share and a sustainable industrial base, unlike Western companies that look at emerging developing countries with contempt and prefer not to invest unless there is a client government that allows them to trick and steal like what happens in my country.

So, when companies like Apple takes advantage of countries to get factories and free trained personell, they get bribes in the tens of BILLIONS, but when they have to set up a factory, the "almost" invest ten million bucks?
I'm guessing the reason Apple is now moving their R&D department from California to China is because the Americans didn't want to give them a few billions.
