At least one of the iPhone 17 models next year will also sport a variable aperture camera.

Also, why SHOULD have people REALLY cared about the old one? The aperture went from f/1.5 to 1/2.4 on a tiny 1/2.55" sensor. It actually didn't lead to basically any changes. I'm not bashing Samsung, I think it was great that they tried something so niche back then. My point is they tried this and then stopped doing it when their phones ACTUALLY needed the variable aperture, starting from the massive (by 2020 standards) 1/1.3" f/1.8 main cam they had back then.

They introduced a nice feature and then removed it when it was actually going to be usable. They're then going to bring it back after Apple do it so that they don't stay behind Apple. People rave about Xiaomi and Huawei's variable aperture because it actually brings results and it's far more difficult to have a continuous variable aperture, than a one stop switch AND these guys are doing it on far larger sensors. So you get more granular control on the aperture on a large sensor.

Samsung is indeed a copycat nowadays and only does stuff AFTER Apple does it. They used to be faster but now they're not.

I ask you, what techbros thought these features made the phone "unnecessarily expensive"? And what other innovations did samsung bring and then take away like this that Apple is doing now and/or other brands are "copying"? I called you a Samsung fanboy because you're painting Samsung as some sort of a hero whilst they're anything but.

This is a really cool feature, especially on 1 inchers. I dunno why manufacturers are shying away from this. I just wish they put it in, no need for software optimizations for the other apertures just use the widest one and let us use the other ones if we want to.

jiyen235, 09 Nov 2024We got iPhones with variable aperture before GTA 6 💀💀 ... moreXiaomi seems to be dropping the variable aperture. Gone from the Xiaomi 15 pro and I think it will probably be gone from the Xiaomi 15 ultra too. Honor stuck with it but it seems likely Vivo or Oppo won't have it on their Ultras too. Nubia will introduce it to the z70 ultra arriving later this month. Maybe a lot of manufacturers think it's not worth the cost. Apart from the hardware itself costing more you also have the complication of optimizing the photos for different apertures. This will also add to the cost as more resources need to be dedicated to this.

Most of the photos taken from phones are zoomed in whether they take baby photos or food photos. Apple need to be using bigger sensor, they shouldn't be doing variable aperture. Most users won't even know what that is.

Batteri Voltas, 09 Nov 2024Aaaah the classic tech timeline. -Samsung does something... moreThey should have stuck to their guns and kept on their devices so that the technology matured as they progressed, don't you think? but then they abandoned it before it reached its full potential. And now, apart from the flip and foldable, they're just sitting quietly in their own little corner, waiting for something new (for lack of a better term) to show up in the market and tag along like a good little boi they are.

Too afraid to even bump their battery capacity on their flagship model, let alone trying the new SiC battery. Imagine that. There should be nothing exciting about their new and upcoming flagship, and I recommend that you don't hold your breath for them (or any brands for that matter).

Unless it's f1.8 to f8, it's still nothing to be amazed over.

Also, the software could use different focal apertures for different scenarios by default, such as the brightest aperture being used at night. If the ultrawide and telephoto/s also got this (Tecno has a design prototype that can do variable focal aperture on a periscope lens), it would allow for a huge amount of customisability when shooting things in general. I know, it'll take ages for them to do it, but eventually they'll add it to the other sensors because they'll run out of other things to do.
