All mobile devices must have USB PD support; new labels are also incoming.

.wojtek, 30 Dec 2024yes - you are right... you don't understand xD onl... moreYes, but I guess my main gripe is the fact that we have to have a law for such matters, instead of companies just doing it out of the goodness of their hearts.

We don't need more laws. We need more people being responsible.

USB ports tent to oxidase after a couple of years use, rendering the chargers useless. The process is accelerated when utilizing different conducting materials that get into direct contact.

Such stupid laws won't save the planet, it won't help reduce any e-waste either, but make the life of customers miserable, by forcing them to buy vastly overpriced chargers that will still produce e-waste.

vcsjxwxh, 30 Dec 2024It's not eco-friendly, I have an oppo reno 6 pro, for ... more"I have this old thing, let's keep making this old thing because I have it!" is a bad argument.
Yes, you have it, and many others have it, eventually it will die - your CHARGER will still be perfectly usable with another type of USB cable plugged into it, mind blowing I know.

Change has to start sometime, if you buy a high-power (100-200W) charger today, given this directive, you'll be using it easily for the next 5-10 years across anything covered under the directive and if you don't - you will still get the benefit of at least carrying only one USB cable with you.

vcsjxwxh, 30 Dec 2024It's not eco-friendly, I have an oppo reno 6 pro, for ... moreI had a Oneplus charger and it was useless when I tried to charge my laptop with it. Bought a 100W GaN charger instead, sold my OP phone and the charger, bought a Samsung phone instead.
Now i carry only one charger in my bag for my Phone, watch, gaming controller, bluetooth speaker, power bank and, laptop and all these devices charge at their maximum capable speeds.

Never going to buy proprietary charging devices and chargers now, till they are under the USB PD charging spec, for higher wattages it can't be helped until we get higher wattage type c standard.

buy a quality GaN charger with multiple ports for some phones and a laptop at least 150w, bad chargers that destroy batteries are a bad idea

It's not eco-friendly, I have an oppo reno 6 pro, for 3 years, I've never changed the charger!! It's much more eco-friendly! The oppo cables are super thick and hard, and even if we no longer have the integrated charger, to get cheaper we'll have to turn to low-quality Chinese chargers, which destroy the phone + sellers will be interested in this market so more chargers produced = more pollution

EU is trying to standardize everything and that’s great to see. Apple lives off “ecosystems” and proprietary nonsense. EU now needs to try to push OEMs to include removable batteries no matter what. EU is saving the world from tons of e-waste dumped in our oceans.

Damn, that's too late, if Apple knew those would be the directives, they would give their phones 101W charging instead of changing the Port... Oh well 🤣

Juraj, 30 Dec 2024Finally! They should have done this 10 years ago. It'... moreu still living under rock thinking naively fast chargers destroying batteries? why .. those times long gone... u need to learn new batteries technology and how in reality works + how android improved battery management in phones since 2022 ....
Phones from china using 60W and higher 80W or 100W or 240W uses dual cell batteries where wattage is split so with 60W SuperVOOC charger is 30W-30W then 80W is 40W-40W
and so on... BUt u must bare in mind it NEVER charges an battery with full amount you see on charger.. It is always phone itself commanding how much volts and wattage will take..
And don't forget again androind is now full of modes in battery settings where u can enable adaptive charging or charging up to 80% or full...
I have Opor Reno8 Pro with 80W charger it has been 2 years and my battery is 90%

This actually means very little to non-apple users, basically everything is already on USB-C already. Apple is the only reason people still have to ask "do you have an apple charger?" when they need to borrow one, lol

I'm waiting for the mandate for swappable batteries to come into effect. Let's see some phones finally innovate... We had waterproof phones with swappable batteries 10 years ago, time to stop making excuses.

This means that iPhones and Pixels are in the clear, but OnePlus and Oppo devices with SuperVOOC must enable USB PD; otherwise, they will be kept off the market. Those companies have supported USB-PD for a while though, so nothing will change.

Now u will see the chinese smartphone brands will stop including charger and probably cable tooo... Byeeeee

A different law, that got a major overhaul in 2023, deals with batteries and requires easily replacement of batteries by anyone with readily available tools, obligates companies to recycle old batteries and the batteries themselves must use recyclable materials with increasing percentage (for example, in 2026 90% of cobalt must be recycled, there is a clear list of materials and percentages of recycled materials of each type by specific dates until 2030). Some parts of this law are already in effect (vehicle batteries section are in effect from Feb 18 2024, rechargeable industrial batteries (except external storage)will be in effect on 18 Feb 2025 and for most devices in Feb 18 2027 and 2029 for industrial batteries with external storage.
Small devices, like rechargeable earbuds or, apparently, e-cigarettes, won't be required (for now) to be replaceable but they are obligated to collect and recycle them.
