Anonymous, 17 Jan 2025um you do know that's what the lite model is forSwitch Lite cannot be used in TV mode. If you want to play comfortably for hours and excel in the game you will have to pay $80 for a Switch Pro controller. Playing in TV mode using the Joy Cons is uncomfortable. I like to play in TV mode by plugging my Switch into a monitor using a Switch Pro controller to play. Plus the semi-portable mode feels like a gimmick to impress kids.

The raw performance of the Nintendo Switch is about 2 times of that of the Wii U. Mario Kart 8 runs in 720p at 59 fps. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe runs in 1080p60. New Super Mario Bros. U runs in 720p at 60 fps. New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe runs in 1080p60. Regarding the Nintendo Switch 2, in TV mode, the Nintendo Switch 2 is more powerful than the PS4 and less powerful than the PS4 Pro.

It's a piece of technology for the mainstream, we are not the target audience. Everyone here is tech-literate and knows a thing or two about chipsets, software, and performance.

Original NSwitch (2017) could have had a chipset that's as fast as the Apple A10X which is pretty close to base XB1 performance. Instead it shipped with a chipset that was half-as-fast and putting it basically on-par with the WiiU, and in the same performance category of the PS3 and the Xbox 360 from 2005. Yikes.

The Switch-2 (2025) has an underclocked Tegra T239 chipset, with an estimated performance that is equal/slightly above the PS4. This is in the performance category of the weaker XB1. Yikes again. We could make some comparisons to older mobile chipsets like the Apple A12X, or Qualcomm SD-782, or Samsung E-1080, or MediaTek D-8200 chipsets for those interested.

Meanwhile, what is possible from the chipset perspective, at least in 2025 performance, in this thermals / form-factor. Well that ranges from the slowest Samsung E-2500, to the decent MediaTek D-9400, Qualcomm SD-8-Elite, and Apple A18 Pro (above PS4 Pro level), then to the capable Qualcomm SD-X-Elite, Apple M4 (above Xbox Series S) and the fastest Apple M4 Pro, or an underclocked M4 Max (below PS5 level).

So yah, Nintendo is shipping out slow and outdated technology and pricing it high, then trying to make up for it all through lawyers and their marketing department.

FF7, 16 Jan 2025 I woke up 7:50 AM and the first thing I did was use the... moreWow, that's quite a wall of text. However, you're not far off with your research. If I may amend or add a few things:

I predict a mediocre launch. There will be a few that sell out because Nintendo fanboys, but IMHO I don't see it adding much to the table... and that's a problem considering that it's up against some major players like PlayStation Pro, Xbox Series X/S, and of course all the PC-powered handhelds like Steam Deck and ROG Ally.

You're right about Nintendo lagging behind, but usually they implement something unique in the next hardware upgrade. For the first time in Nintendo's history, I don't really see that happening, and that's an issue. Sure, you could argue that New Nintendo 3DS didn't add much to the original 3DS, but it actually added face tracking for the 3D effect, something that was not done at a great scale in game consoles before, so my point still stands. This whole "the controller is a mouse" idea was already tried before - even before the Legion Go, and it eerily has the same controller connectivity as the Joy-Cons on Switch 2... so again, not unique in the mass market scale.

It using a SoC that pales in comparison to competitor's hardware makes me wonder how many corners are being cut in order to achieve stuff like 4K. Still locked at a top speed of 30 FPS? 1080p upscaled to 4K? Nintendo already dismissed the idea of using AI, so it's likely there won't be AI-powered features in this device, either.

In short, keep your expectations low. Oh, and BTW, it's "Virtual Boy", not "Virtua Boy".
