I those "mid: cores can still only be clocked so low, and in cases where even that performance isn't warranted, a low power core could be useful. Like one or two for background/screen off tasks. Maybe ARM has made it so that the 700 series can now go low enough that the 500 series is obsolete.

                      They better name it differently. I mean if they still call it Snapdragon 8 Elite, wouldn't that be misleading consumers? Maybe should've been the Snapdragon 8s Elite.

                        xcv, 17 Jan 2025Playing audio is done by DSP. It has nothing with CPU.You would still need to use a CPU core or two to run the streaming app, manage the GUI of the OS, background apps and a lot more.

                            Nothing new here because these are chips with little production errors. Apple does the same between their pro and non-pro iPhone lineup for years now. The performance difference is not huge and it's sustainable not throwing them into trash. Yet it has clearly to be communicated that this is another chip and not the 8 elite. Maybe they just call it SD 8. Would be a great chip for flagship killer devices because the performance is nearly 8 elite and better than 8s elite and there won't be a huge amount available of this chip because it's only a fabrication error side-product.

                              This soc with missing core must has a different product name than elite.
                              In a similar precedent, the product name of the low clock version of 8+gen1 and 7gen1 was the same as the normal one, confusing consumers.

                                It wouldn't be an Elite if it has one less cores.
