Snapdragon 6 Gen 4 unveiled: first on TSMC 4nm node, first with ARMv9 CPU cores

12 February 2025
This chipset is also the first in the 6-series to support INT4 for AI tasks and it brings a solid improvement to GPU performance over the previous generation.

T M, 13 Feb 2025Most new cpu are just too powerful for 99% of the consumer.... more1. While you don't have to upgrade if you still feel fast
Some might upgrade just because they bored

2. While AnTuTu might be unimportant to you
But why would I spent $250 on 7gen or 6gen with antutu just around 600K if I can get phone for $300 with antutu of 1.5 million+ (example poco x6 pro & poco f6).

Anonymous, 13 Feb 2025The problem is the "new" midranger is very weak. ... moreMost new cpu are just too powerful for 99% of the consumer. I’m still running a OP 7T with a 855 plus and i haven’t played or used an app that caused any slowdown. These antutu scores are just meaningless bragging rights nowadays.

Sam N8 808 owner, 13 Feb 2025This is only a recent trend, 2019 onwards. During 2015, Sn... moreIndeed! I've criticized Qualcomm earlier for this tone-deaf move of artificially restricting video recording to 1080p, especially given that the SD695 isn't that different from the SD870 (it doesn't feature the customized versions of the ARM cores used, however). What's much more interesting is that older chipsets that are minimum 80-90% less powerful compared to the SD695 didn't have any issue with 4K recording, and made proper use of the cameras (for instance, the Nokia 8.3 to the Nokia X30, as well as the Xperia 10 III to IV)

Using AnTuTu... This 6 gen 4 will be around 600K-700K
While last year flagship 8 gen 3 is about 2 million AnTuTu
And last last year 8 gen 2 is about 1.5 million AnTuTu
And 8 gen 1 AnTuTu is 1 million
So, yeah, thats why the 6 gen & 7 gen didn't sell well

Koishi Komeiji, 12 Feb 2025basically underclocked 7s Gen 3, but this segment around $1... moreIf phones can be offered at this price why should Nothing, Samsung, Moto bother with their mid range offer using a SD 7s Gen 3 or equivalent? The 7 series has been underused and purposely neutered. We'll see what the Gen 4 offer is but it will probably be very expensive initially.

Since most mid-rangers come with previous gen flagship chips now, the 6 gen 4 is kind of late.
2.3Ghz max clockspeed? I own a Huawei Mate 20 Pro from 2018 with 7nm flagship chip that can do 2.6Ghz.
Would have made sense in 2020, but today they can only put it into low end phones, but I guess this is gonna be too expensive.

10 should be added and 7 should be removed to make it even.

                  10 (X) elite, 8 pro/plus, 6 pro/plus, 4 plus
                  10 = 2 socs, 8 = 3 socs, 6 = 3 socs, 4 = 2 socs = 10 socs

                    Realme P3 is ready.

Minu, 12 Feb 2025So worse to the point that upper mid-rangers until recent, ... moreThis is only a recent trend, 2019 onwards.
During 2015, Snapdragon 625 was the first to come on 14um (micrometer) chipset construction, while the rest of the world was on 28~um.
It gained huge benefits in efficiency in those days. And it could do 4K, and 1080p60 also.

Long story short, a midranger punched the market hard. This won't repeat now, whether its 6 Gen 4 or Gen 5 or 6.

And those days, you could use any aftermarket app to try new camera resolutions. I used Open Camera to do 4K on Redmi Note 4, and it had proper details..
Today, no app on SD696 can bypass the artificial system restrictions to record even 1200p, leave alone 4K.

6Gen1 and 6Gen3 were only on $200 phones, and this easily look like QC will charge more

Pointlessly long article - it's all revealed in the chart at the end - 6 gen 4 is just slightly under-clocked 7 gen 3. No need for anything further.
