I think that 5 years is long enough and definitely no longer then 7 years as most people replace their phones by that time for poor battery life etc.

As long as the user wants, I would change the model to windows-like that has some minimum HW requirements for the OS, but is purely up to the user if the wants to upgrade or not. I am aware, that some new (AI) functions can not be supported by older phones, fine. In that case, do this model only with security updates. This would prevent you from throwing a very powerful HW to trash bin, only because your OEM decided not to support it any more. They should focus more on having an income from SW, instead of selling purely new phones because of ending support to old ones, its... "synthetic" end.

Sad day for the owners, my iPhone XS which was released before the S10 still gets all the latest OS updates. Rumors are unsure whether it will get iOS 19. and if not, it will get security updates for another year.

It's hardware issues, not software issues, that force them to buy a new iPhone—primarily draining batteries, a damaged charging port, or a cracked screen.

I am not going to stop using my S20. I purchased it in 2020 April. It works very well, I charge it ones or twice a day and battery is still working. It works fast and flawless. I will keep using it! I hope they were giving it more time.

403, 09 Apr 2025*What happened to Samsung nowadays? Here, I fix your question. Most people besides creeps don't use a telephoto on the longest distance so they probably realized it wasn't worth the cost. Basically they're doing what companies should be doing, and not listening to a loud minority(sd card/headphone jack users), and cutting costs where it has little impact on the device

In my opinion, 4 years of major OS updates and 5 years of security patches is enough. Maybe 5+6. 7 is honestly overkill and just costs the companies more money. But hey, maybe they can offer that because software rarely changes and all phones are the same tall aspect ratio with a cutout.

5 years seems reasonable for the base S20 but someone who paid top dollar for the Ultra could probably still use it and appreciate another year of updates.
Any s20 ultra owners commenting here on that?

I keep phone till it brakes down. Or it's not worth to repair it more. It mostly happens when repair cost and phone resell value has negligible difference or problem keep popping up even after repair.
then it's time to say that device good bye.

its not about providing Updates, Security is a big concern that needs to be fixed from time to time.
in iOS, old OS devices even stop getting updates from applications in App Store.
Kudos to Android where even devices at Android 8/9 are still getting application updates like Firefox, Chrome, email and social apps including many more.

And what matters is the quality of updates, not the quantity, as most brands are notorious to force users into buying newer iterations of their devices.
