I don't really care about updates, so it's pointless. I mean updates are really just small fixes that 99% people forget. AND my phone is stuck at Android 13. The short answer is no.

It's important to have at least android 13, since below that, many banking apps don't work

It depends. If its a pixel everything is the same. For samsung users yes it matters as its a major update. My dad's pixel got android 15 update months ago but no any changes. Meanwhile my samsung just got it and its very different now. But as for usability you can use android 14 and keep it.

When you have a Google phone, you don't think much about updates because the phone is always up to date.

My Nothing Phone 2 is very much on Android 15. My A51, is stuck on an Android 14 LongUi One UI port and waiting for Port 15.
My Note 4 is on 11, a LineageOS 18.1 ROM. Too bad, no community projects for bringing it any further, and I couldn't care less, only because that's not my main. 1-2 generation of android behind doesn't matter too much even for the main, but security updates do.

My current phone has Android 4.2.2. My phone is Samsung I9190 Galaxy S4 mini. I use it, because it is newest medium size android phone. I want to use newer phone, but all newer phones are large.

In the early years of Android, updates were a huge deal. Nowadays, they're very incremental changes and improvements. Android is obviously a very mature OS, so as long as I have the latest security patch, I'm fine with it.

The fragmentation problem of Android has created a unique situation, and all thanks to Google's effort in compartmentalizing Android to the point that you can update most of its components independently from the OS. So one can still be on Android 11 or 12, and runs the latest fully patched browser. Oh, and Google just EOL Android 12, so Android 12 won't receive anymore security patches from Google (OEMs can do it themselves if they wanted to, but who would?).
Still, that's not the end of the world, as Android has another layer called Google Play System update where Google can still push patches and even new features to older phones (like Quick Share).
Security patch imo is more important, and I hope we will be seeing at least 10 years support for security patches.
