This is why if somebody asks me to take a photo with their phone I refuse.
Nobody wants to get involved in an insurance scam.

I think skins are better compromise. we could customize the look, basic protection (for resale) without any bulk

Well. Cases can be cool too. I have 8 cases for my galaxy s24 plus. Different colors and styles. But if you want only one go for black or grey. Transparent cases yellow and scratch faster. And I've tried many of them. Even expensive ones. Still the same result. Meanwhile others barely show any signs of wear or scratches after heavy usage and dropping. My favorite brands are spigen, speck, rinkge, otterbox, poetic, mous, craze... But if I could pick only one would go for spigen. Affordable but great cases.

you can buy a decent case + tempered glass combo for your phone under 10$ on amazon these days.
Plus phones are very slippery a good case will increase the in-hand feeling.

rayray, 25 Apr 2025Hey it is personal preference. If you pay all that money a... moreThis tho. As much as I want to show off my phone, this slippery hand of mine and me being unmindful can just drop the phone whenever destiny wants, so better safe than sorry.
But if people can be sure that they won't drop their phone in any condition, then by all mean feel free to not use any case.
You buy your phone, you do whatever you want for YOUR phone. As simple as that.

DarlingYext, 25 Apr 2025"That "zero value once opened" idea is cluel... moreYou just proved the point: iPhones and Samsung S series are the main flagships holding serious value here.
Common sense for anyone paying a lot for an expensive flagship means choosing those brands for value retention, local availability and support.
Sure, a photographer might grab a niche Sony phone for its pro camera features, but they know they're ditching like insane trade-in deals Samsung offers.

I use a case and a screen protector on my pixel 9 pro xl, I wish i could use it without a case.. but a glass sandwich phone(especially frosted backs) are so slippery that they almost slide of a perfectly flat table.. so my issue isn't durability but grip..
i use a thin carbon case with magsafe and a magnetic popsocket:)

That's Apple's opinion, there will be unofficial cases anyway.

... more"That "zero value once opened" idea is clueless."
Make a choice and pick a side already, of course it isn't true, but then you would still say that any imported device has no value, because YOU PERSONALLY would never buy one for any amount of money, but that doesn't mean others won't. I would never buy a Samsung device again, but I'm not calling them zero value devices, and I'm not doubting what they are worth, because I know exactly that it's usually a lot.
"As for imported Chinese phones? Most EU retailers likely do not take those or just offer, a symbolic, €1 trade-in."
That's not how the used market works, at least in the EU it definitely doesn't work like this. There are 3 types of devices that worth a lot of money here, iPhones, S series Samsung* devices, and rare devices, the latter doesn't necessarily mean imported devices, but those are part of it too.
*A series Samsung devices can still be sold, but they lose their value really fast, while Z series devices are pretty much an instant no for a store that buys used phones.

Minu, 25 Apr 2025Let's not forget how the technology industry works. On... more"One of my colleagues recently compared that to opening up a food packet, taking a bite out of it, repackaging it and reselling. I can't disagree with their analogy."
This succinct comment counters the advert .
I use both film screen protector and 'kick stand' armour case. We phone & I never leave the house naked.
My phone which I have a original case is in "AS NEW" immaculate condition now as when first opened
When you see the scratches on used SP or the case micro scuffs (no drops whatsoever) the case it clearly doesn't look new at all.
Even in pockets there is potential for damage.
If you're not going to spend 2%? more or gonna take the advice of a 36 second video then Good luck
Finally
My question is why ask this tourist to take a photograph, when you could have easily asked the juggler? 😱
Or parents whatever happened to the 5 seconds rule...
The Apple has fallen on the floor. Bin it!!!

Of course they do, beat up old phones are less appealing to buyers and hold less value than new ones, which is what they make money from.

ProMaxUltraAreBricks, 25 Apr 2025Only thick and bulky clear cases offer real protection, and... moreAny case can and will offer more protection than a skin, plus you can just use both a skin of your choice and a clear case on top of it.
"Thinness is part of the design, not something to be hidden.."
Thinness may not be something to be hidden, but it's definitely something that needs to be protected. The device not being scratched and broken is also part of design imo.

DarlingYext, 25 Apr 2025"Cases are for hiding design, skins are for enhancing ... moreOnly thick and bulky clear cases offer real protection, and they still kill the sleekness.
What about thin clear cases? Might as well just use a skin for all the small protection they offer.
Plus they might turn yellow anyway.
Thinness is part of the design, not something to be hidden, except for some already thick bulky phones, I guess. But people can do whatever they want...

Apple devices resale value is the strongest, even used, older models still remain expensive. And Samsung trade-ins here are great, easily knocking €700+ off a new flagship for a old model (but the best deals are in the U.S., or at least they were).
As for imported Chinese phones? Most EU retailers likely do not take those or just offer, a symbolic, €1 trade-in.
Some brands hold some value, others are just instant depreciation e-waste outside their bubble.
