Sony Xperia 1 VII brings Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, larger sensor for ultrawide camera

13 May 2025
The Porsche of smartphone upgrades - looks the same, is a bit better and faster.

Woah, a phone with a Snapdragon 8 Elite, headphone jack, Micro SD card slot, a very large ultrawide camera, even a telemacro shooter, yet they could still fit in a 5000mAh battery. Shocking, while others are just thin.

Some could say it's overpriced, I'd say it's not the worst offender of the day.

    Anonymous, 15 hours agoNo you won’t. None of you do.This is the problem with these "Unique phones" that have unique features, these phones have a HUGE hype in internet, glazing and "fanboying" but no actual buyers, that's why some of these phones fade away further in time.

      Yawn

        It's sad that there's not an improvement on the periscope-telephoto. I would have loved a bigger sensor because it was such a good phone just to ruin it with an UW "upgrade".Plus they still upped the price to 1500 € (here in Germany) and don't give the new Sony wh-1000mx6 in the pre-order which would then be acceptable price. I really hope they change the pre-order to the new xm6. I'm still such a big Glazer that I still bought it

          This looks really good, even without the Telephoto upgrade.

          But at 1499 euro MSRP, it will be a tough pill to swallow.

            Needed a decent DAC. QHD+ display, IP69 rating. Larger Silicon Battery.

              Love they didn't put ugly holes in the screen but this isn't a proper upgrade over the 1 VI, I was holding out for this one but now I'm starting to reconsider getting this. Sony should have improved the telephoto and screen resolution to atleast QHD. this is not acceptable for a phone this price.

                              Having just watched the live launch, I can confidently say that 'underwhelmed' doesn't come close. Excluding the standard SoC change, there are just three physical changes: (1) Slight aperture increase on the ultrawide. (2) Gold solder on the headphone jack port. (3) Brightness sensor on the back. The rest is pure AI slop. No display or speaker upgrades, no haptics or battery upgrades, even the camera sensors aren't Sony's best. I got really p****d off with the Walkman team interview - where they banged on about this tiny gold solder but neglected to mention that the Xperia still doesn't have a proper DAC.

                                Anonymous, 18 hours ago1/3.5" OK, very sad, waiting another year.Yeah it's sad.. they didn't upgrade the sensor which needed it the most.. The big UW is nice tho

                                  YUKI93, 17 hours agoI feel bummed about it too as well. Sony could have leap ah... moreIt would already be a huge improvement if they gave the periscope zoom an updated lens allowing for somewhat sharper images.
                                  So, not all is list, I guess. We will see what the reviews tell.

                                    What I was hoping them to improve was the zoom camera. IQ of the main camera was already phenomenal from the last year and I couldn't care less about the UWA. They just folowed the trend. But the zoom camera IQ wasn't good and looks like it will keep that way. Not good.

                                      justasmile, 18 hours agoSpoiler alert: No Xperia 5, not even an Xperia 10. And whi... more2021 = 5 phones
                                      2022 = 3 phones
                                      2025 = probably only 1

                                        A few considerations:
                                        1. While it's terrific to see the UWA camera sensor considerably increase in size, the focal length of WA and UWA are way too close to each other. 16 mm is not exactly ultra wide (12mm or max 14 mm would have done the trick), and 24 mm on the main snapper is too wide for the standard camera.
                                        A much more useful distribution would have been 14mm and 28mm.

                                        2. 6 years of security updates is still less than what the competition offers, which is barely acceptable in a phone that is more expensive than the flagship phones from Samsung or Apple. It's an improvement over previous iterations, though.

                                        3. Can't wait for the full review!
