Palm Pre comes with spanking new Touch OS, looks amazing

09 Jan, 2009
After heating up the web for a couple of weeks Palm finally announced the awaited Palm Pre. Equipped with a touchscreen, a sliding QWERTY keyboard and a new full touch webOS, it is aimed at stealing quite a big...

Nice pdt, but i have a few reservations of it being the iPhone killer,
1) smaller screen size than the iphone - dunno how many colours rendered
2) More Importantly, being a control freak not having sync functionality, is a BIG downer.
to date i have not found a phone that is as VFM as the SE P990i.

Still awaiting the iPhone Killer

We heard & seen lots of iphone wanna be. But this is the true iphone killer. The best UI I have ever seen to this date. Finally Palm is back to the business.

Only thing I don't like in this phone is physical keyboard. It has such a good touch screen....does not make sense having sliding keyboard. Hope they will make full touch screen version in near future.

Sprint likes the worst wireless provider with the least subscribers. Palm should of released this phone to AT&T, Verizon, to bounce back even more from the slump they are in. More subscribers, more people will get the phone hense more money palm will make. If it went to AT&T I will get it only if its not $400+.

Android will be successful simply by the grace of Google not because consumer wants open source. So as long as Google becomes what Nokia is for Symbian, Apple is to IPhone and Microsoft is to WinMo, then it'll survice. If it becomes what Motorola is to Linux then Android is nothinig.
Anyway that's just me. I've never believed in the open source movement. Its just too disorganized and lacks single point sources to win major battles.

Open source can very often lead to malicious software being created and opens the channel for poor, cheap software and plagiarism, which will keep away a lot of the better developers because they want a format that will actually make them money. Also it will keep away big name developers, such as EA which already has a decent collection of games released for the iPhone

First, the phone itself looks like a HTC.
Second, after so very long, the true "next PalmOS" version.
Third, I quit PalmOS when they failed to roll out a PDA phone.
Fourth, contrary to what people have been saying, this does not compete with the Iphone. Palm should not position it as such because Iphone relies on its touch interace for almost 80% of the Iphone's success. Take it away and its plan rubbish. So to beat it the news OS + hardware must have a comparable touch interface.
Fifth, it actually competes with WinMo the same during the PDA days of Palm vs Pocket PC.

So its exciting to see a new Palm phone with a brand new touch interface.
But still not seen enough of the OS to properly comment but there are good reasons to be optimistic given PalmOS reputation.
If it retains the ease of use and organizer capabilities in previous versions, I may switch from WinMo. Its that exciting.

Also just to add, with Microsoft not doing any WinMo7 demo or presso, and many old WinMo users are actually Palm converts like myself, WinMo risks losing further. But until I see the final version of this new Palm OS, I'm happy with my WinMo6.1.

As we will see in the near futhure (when real open android and other open source smartphones will be in use) not being open will put palm and apple under pressure again.
Next starts the shipping of the first totally open smartphone with nice specs at very low price. And there will be a lot more. So ... the succes of this one (Palm Pre) is a big question.

People keep saying iPhone has something to be afraid whenever a new model surface from the net. wakeup people! iPhone is a different league. Its not the same with other buffed phones with soo many features that are sometimes useless to consumers. im not a iphone user but i always think that owning one is like having a sports car in a urban area with clogged streets. Its just impractical to buy one. iPhone has its own character, it has a different feel, and its a phone that rarely depreciates every quarter of the year. Let's face it, iPhone will never be cast out when someone mentions about smartphones.

The OS is HOT, but the styling is not. I reckon that the next phone they announce should try to make it a bit cooler looking... And Flash support in the web browser would give it another point over the iphone!

this phone is ugly Palm should have made the hardware look better. the OS loos great IMO only the iPhone OS looks better. I don't think this phone will sell because Palm is losing a lot of business to Apple and Blackberry and I don't see those people going back to Palm. It's sad because Palm used to be the biggest company when it came to smartphones now it's one of the smallest

I respect everyone's opinion and tastes, but yours is plain bs. The iphone and palm pre are not junks at all. They're both very capable phones. The iphone has sold more than all winmo phones combined. So how can you say that it did not achieve much? All phonemakers want and need our monies. That is how they survive, just in case you do not know that.

well, an interesting phone, of course they must of done some dealing with Apple, Apple has the patent on multi-touch screens.

Although this isnt surprising that everyone has jumped on this as an iphone killer, but nobody has even mentioned price, Palm products have always been top dollar devices so you can expect this to be no different and sorry to say but the iphone is very affordable, making it more available to the general public, which = market wins.

pity there will probably be a new iphone by the time my contract is up or i might have actually looked at getting this phone

but aple is shy to show up them self at CES, that they din not achieve much
with their aple-crap, only sliding keyboard and camera from 2MP to 3MP but no recording possibilities, that means the same specs as aple!
