To AARONBOY:

YES it's possible to update your firmware to a later version BUT you CAN'T get it done through a WEBSITE link.

You can ONLY update your firmware (this process is also known as 'flashing the phone') via special cables and a special type of electronic box which is expensive for the average consumer.

The best way to get an upgrade done is to take your phone to a Nokia Center, who will do the upgrade for you free of charge if your phone is still under warranty, otherwise they will charge you a small fee. There are also other 3rd parties who will flash your phone for you. The easiest way to locate these type of people is to check your nearest phone repair shop, if they don't flash phones ask them to recommend a company or someone that does.

It is said that if you put the music files in the root directory of the Memory Card the Music Player will find your MP3 files. The root directory is the main area of the Memory Card, that is, do NOT put the music files in any folders that you created on the Memory Card, or any folders that came with the Memory Card...do NOT put the music files in any folders period! This only applies to firmware 4.43 and older. Once you upgrade to 5.24 or later you can put your music files anywhere at all in your phone or the memory card and the Music Player will find it automatically.

Oh yeah... and by the way... i think my camera has a lil problem.. but no worries...

      Original_jamaican,
Is it possible to have an update or upgrade on the firmware version on your Nokia6230? If it can be done..could you give me a link to a site that does it? Or only Nokia has the capability of doing so?

      Thanx..

What version firmware you have ? Version 5.24 and later looks for MP3 & AAC files from ever corner of the phone so no matter where in the internal memory or memory card you put an MP3 or AAC audio file, the music player WILL find it. You can check your firmware revision by typing *#0000# in stand-by mode, that is, where you see the battery and reception indicator bars.

That black spot you are talking about has me puzzled, I have had 2 different 6230 phones, with 3 different firmwares between the two and not once have I ever seen a dark spot on the upper left side of any photos I took...the only dark thing I see is the small black camera icon at the upper left. Please keep me posted

              To JUDE:

It's funny how these Nokia people tell you the problem and didn't offer to fix it for you. They are correct though, dirt can indeed mess up communication between a phone and a cable.

I had somewhat of a similar problem but it wasn't with my headset, it was with my charger. I noticed sometimes the phone would stop charging prematurely...meaning before it the battery was fully charged. Eventually I realised what the problem was. Because I carry my phone in my pocket sometimes lint and other debris in my pocket would get into the charging socket, most times they would block one of the gold contact which the charger needs to touch in order to charge the battery. Sometimes it would get really bad that the charger would slip out a bit because of the clogged socket, I never thought about anything getting into the socket until one day I decided to investigate it. I saw quite a bit of lint in there and then I realised why the resistance whenever I tried to plug in my charger and why the charger wouldn't communicate with the battery properly if it even communicated at all.

Believe it or not, lint/debris has never gotten into my POP-PORT connector socket despite it being so close to the charging socket. However, lint/debris got into my previous phone pop-port connector socket, it was a Nokia 3200. Sometimes whenever I plugged in my CA-42 data cable, the PC wouldn't recognise the phone and when I decided to investigate it I saw lint in one of the holes where the connector plugs into and I believe some lint was stuck across the gold pins where the data cable touchs.

JUDE, in your case it could just be a matter of something being stuck in one or both holes on either end of your pop-port connector, where the headset is supposed to plug into. Examine it closely, use a pin to push down in either hole and see if it touches anything soft. A pin works fine but be careful not to use it too hard because you don't want to scratch up your phone. You can also use to pin and gently scrape each of the gold contacts which your headset touches, all 13 of them. All in all that should solve your problem, if not, try a different headset and if that fails maybe something is going wrong with the gold communication pins. Please let me know the outcome. Good luck.

I'm using a Transcend 1GB MMC. It read and write data at 6MB per second...it has been reliable over the few months I have had it so I have no complaints. It's fast enough for me.

First of all, there's no known software which can enable the 6230 to read .avi or .wma formats, maybe a java midlet will be developed someday to make it possible, who knows ?

Secondly, it's strange how your PC Suite works fine on your Pentium 2 but doesn't on the Pentium 4. Try uninstalling the software from 'Control Panel' - 'Add/Remove Programs'. Uninstall the cable driver first which is listed separately from the PC Suite itself. You normally find it above the PC Suite title. Once you remove the 'Nokia Connectivity Cable Driver' go ahead an unistall 'Nokia PC Suite'. Restart your PC right after you uninstall both programs. When you restart the machine reinstall the Nokia PC Suite and see if everything works fine after that.

                            To DICEKEI:

5.50 is still the latest firmware as far as I know.

The 6230i is basically the same as the Nokia 6230, just that it enhances many of the features the 6230 has and it has support for themes. I have heard many complaints that the higher resolution runs down the battery quickly.

There's a noticeable lag in it, the 6230 is faster and I have seen many complaints about the ringtones ascending when you set the ring volume to level 4 or 5...meaning it starts off low then gets high.

I have used one before but not long enough to say whether it's really a better buy over the 6230.

You will have to try to get your hands on one and decide for yourself. Nevertheless, Hopefully what I said was enough for you to make your decision.

                              To DICEKEI:

There's no software that can enhance the camera other than Nokia's own firmware updates.

Firmware 5.24, 5.35 and the later updates which are the basically the same as 5.24 allows you to experience the real 6230.

The easiest way to maximise the use of your 6230 is getting a large capacity MMC (Multimedia Memory Card). The 32MB that comes with the phone just doesn't cut it. It's just to demonstrate the power of the phone. The minimum capacity I would recommend is 256MB. Once you have a large capacity then the possibilities are endless with this phone. Music, Movies, Movie Trailers, Music videos, bloopers and other type of video clips, photos, grapics, screen savers whether real or animated, ringtones whether it be MP3 rings, AAC ringtone, polyphonic rings, monophonic rings, AMR ringtones. You can even use it as a jump drive / flash drive / thumb drive by putting computer software on the drive, whether it be a Windows XP installation files, Microsoft Office installation files or you could simply put document files, whether it be word files, excel files, access files. wordperfect files any form of files that can be stored on a computer hard drive. This is useful if you want to transport files from office to home or vice versa...remember that you need to have a data cable, bluetooth or infrared adapter to connect the PC with.
Once this phone helped out a friend, I was over their house and they wanted a Microsoft word document to be printed, their ink was finished so I decided to take the file over to my house, I didn't have any diskettes or CDs to burn the file on, there was no jump drive / thumb drive around either, I decided to use my phone after some thinking and transferred the word document file to the phone using my data cable which I had with me. They already had the PC Suite software installed because they have a Nokia phone as well. So that was one instance where the 6230 proved to be very useful that day.

Not every phone or every Nokia phone allows PC files to be transferred to them, for example, I had a Nokia 3200 and once I tried to transfer a microsoft word document file to it and I got an error message saying the 'That Operation is Restricted' and 'The Mobile Phone Rejected the Operation...the phone simply wouldn't allow any form of computer files on it.

Another way to utilise the features and maximise the use of the phone is by getting java applications, whether it be a business application, communication application or game application. The 6230 supports J2ME (Java 2 Mobile Edition) and MIDP2 (Mobile Information Device Profile 2)...many s40 phones like the Nokia 3200 only supports MIDP1. Nokia claims that the phone will accept up to 128KB java apps BUT I got a 200KB to work pefectly! I even got a game which was more than 300KB to work but it was off screen due to the type of resolution screen it was intended for. If you love games then try out some on the 6230. The older series 40 (s40) games normally maxed out at 64KB...eg. Nokia 3200 wouldn't allow any java app. over 64KB to be installed. These same 64KB will work perfectly with the 6230 but most of these games aren't that great unless it's from a company called Gameloft or Macrospace other than these two companies it hard to find many great games that doesn't pass the 64KB file size. If you are a big game fan than forget the s40 games and focus on the series 40 version 2 games (s40v2) which is exclusive for the Nokia 6230. The 6230 was the FIRST s40v2 phone! The s40v2 games normally has background music so while you are playing the game there's music playing right through. They are normally big too has in the time it may take you to finish the entire game and lastly they have great graphics and wonderful soundeffects. If you have a Nokia 6230 then series 40 version 2 games is the way to go.

There's nothing too great for the 6230 to handle, originally, the phone isn't supposed to support 3GP2 files (only 3GP) but I got a 3GP2 file to work, showed clearly the only thing is that no sound could be heard. This phone handles anything you throw at it, whether it be the highest bitrate MP3, the highest bitrate 3GP...the ONLY problem is that these high bitrate files will drain your phone battery.

This phone can be used to do so many things for the mere fact that it's a business class phone and classic phone all in one device.

NONE of the Nokia 6230 firmwares has support for themes, you will need the 6230i for that.

The most important thing to remember about the 6230 is that while many phones have limitations and restrict certain things from going on those phones, the 6230 accepts anything you throw at it!

                                      To DICEKEI:

A 2GB Memory Card may work with your 6230 BUT it won't register the correct memory size.

When v4.44 was released, 2GB memory capacity wasn't in Nokia's mind but surprisingly v4.44 is able to recognise a 1GB MMC which Nokia claimed wouldn't work. When you check the memory size, you will see something like 80MB but ignore that because you can store stuff on the card going over that 80MB all the way up to 1GB. You just WON'T know how much capacity is really being used. It's a strong possibility that a 2GB MMC will work with firmware v4.44.

A 2GB will definately work with v5.24. I myself had v4.44 but upgraded to v5.24 because v4.44 has a lot of limitations. 5.24 shows the real beauty of the 6230. If version 5.35 is the only firmware available then go along with it. 5.35 is the same as 5.24, 5.24 is a personal preference on my part so don't worry, you will get the same results if you go with 5.35. If you decided to go along with 5.35 I assure you that you will enjoy it and you will see an instant difference compared to 4.44. Finally, 5.35 WON'T harm your phone in anyway, it will only make it better (smile). I will send you an e-mail in regards to 5.24 so check your mailbox once you read this. Let me know how things work out.
