        To BOGDAN:

The ONLY way to save MP3s or any other file for that matter to the memory card is via the PC...either using a data cable, bluetooth or infrared.

In receiving a file from another phone or other devices, the file is saved to the 6230's internal memory by default, that is a standard thing and you CAN'T change it!

You can assign a password to your MMC by going to 'Gallery', the MMC option is automatically highlighted once you enter the gallery, select 'Options' then scroll up or down until you see 'Set Password', highlight and select the 'Set Password' option, enter your password, press 'OK', it will ask you to confirm it, retype it a second time and it's case sensitive so if it was in FULL CAPS when you first typed it then it has to be in FULL CAPS the second time around when it asks you to confirm it.

However, I DO NOT RECOMMEND using the password feature, you can end up locking yourself out of your own memory card. Once you assign a password you can access the memory card using the same phone easily BUT once you take out the MMC and put it in another phone, the password WILL be required in order to access the MMC. If a password is assigned to a MMC and you put that MMC in a Memory Card Reader, when you try to access the MMC the computer will FREEZE!...until you take out the MMC out of the computer. To get around this problem you first need to disable the password from the MMC using the same phone which assigned the password and then put the MMC back in the Card Reader. Use the password feature with caution, in some cases people had to throw away their memory cards because they forgot their passwords. I hope you now have a better understanding of the things you asked about. Take care.

                To MYKL:

Backing up is fairly easy. You have 3 options, DKU-2 data cable, Bluetooth or Infrared (IrDa). I use a DKU-2 cable because cable is faster than the others. If you choose to go with Bluetooth of IrDa then your PC MUST have the respective adapter or as some call it dongle.

Secondly you need to install Nokia PC Suite. Nokia PC Suite v6.82 is the latest but to me v6.4 is the best to date. It really doesn't matter which one you install, both will get the job done...if you want better flexibility though v6.4 is the way to go.

You can find the PC Suite on the CD that came with the phone, if you don't have the CD you can download it from Nokia's website, here's the link http://europe.nokia.com/A4144903. You WON'T find v6.4 on Nokia's site because they only keep the latest versions on their site.

You will certainly see an improvement in audio quality using a better headset, I don't have to do any tests to know so (smile).

It's possible for a 2GB MMC to work with the Nokia 6230 BUT you need to have firmware v5.24 or higher. You can check your firmware by typing *#0000# in standby mode...where you see the battery and signal indicators. The speed will differ depending on the MMC and Manufacturer of that MMC.

The older technology was called MMCs, the newer technology is called MMC Plus! for the full sized MMC and MMC Mobile for the reduced sized MMC Plus!...where you fit the smaller sized MMC in an adapter before putting it in the phone.

Regardless of this, some MMC Plus / MMC Mobile are faster than others, pay attention to the read and write speed before buying a card. The older MMCs normally maxed out at 2.5MB per second whereas the newer ones (MMC Plus!) range from about 6MB - 32MB per second. Be sure to note that you will pay more for higher speed MMC Plus! cards. For best results DON'T go below 6MB per second read & write speed. The MMC Plus! which reads at 32MB per second may be a waste because the phone won't be able to utilise all that speed, I am yet to find out what MMC speed the 6230 max out at. If anybody knows they can share it with me (smile).
MYKL I hope my answer will be of great help. Take care.

@OJ- i've been reading your comments and they are really helpful. i hope that you can help me out with some concerns...

                  how do i back-up data on my 6230 before i flash/upgrade to 5.5?

can i expect a reasonable improvement in the audio quality with a better headset?

will a 2gb mmc work with the 6230? still with the same speed?

                  thanks!

To B. MEADOWS: Well you have to look elsewhere and forget about the Nokia offices. Take the phone to any repair shop, if they don't facilitate the service I'm sure they can recommend a source for you. Take care and thanks for reading.

Original Jamaican, I have followed your advice and information on this site and am very grateful. I have two 6230's and would like to get them flashed to upgrade to v5.24(or better). But when I checked with Nokia to see where the closest place is to do that(Atlanta Georgia, United States)There is nowhere to do it. Nokia suggested that I mail in the equipment, but they would not flash the phones unless there were actual problems with the phones(which I do not have actual problems with the phones). Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

                                To TARIQ:

You can also take it to any phone repair center that flashes phone or even an individual if they are into the phone flashing thing.

TARIQ: Sometimes we all face memory loss with our 6230. Sometimes it happens for various reasons. Many times it just cannot be explained.

In your case it appears that part of the song is stuck in memory. First of all do a factory reset, turn off the phone, take out the battery, SIM card and Memory Card (if you have one in your phone). Leave everything out for a few hours, even for a day if possible. Try this first and if it doesn't work then you can try what I did to my own phone below.

There was a point in time I was able to reclaim some lost space but it can be very tricky. Originally my phone had 7.3MB and then for some reason it went to 7MB then 6.9MB gradually. It never went lower than 6.9MB.
What I had to do was to full up the rest of the phone memory and then transfer everything to the PC using my DKU-2 cable.

You can try filling up the remainder of your phone memory with one big file or multiple files and if you don't have a data cable for your phone then just use the phone buttons to delete all the stuff you filled the phone up with. It worked for me sometimes but there were times when I just could reclaim any memory at all.

If none of the above works you can turn off the phone, turn it back on and do a factory reset then go through each menu and set them up to your liking. I know this may sound strange but I actually got back some lost memory by doing a factory reset and then going through each menu and customising them the way I want.

If none of my tips works after trying them over and over then you will have to visit a Nokia center, tell them the problem and they will know what to do. They will either flash
your phone with the same firmware or they might just do a backup and empty phone contents procedure. It will cost you if your phone is no longer under warranty but that method should fix the problem.

Memory loss is what I fear the most with this phone because it can be the hardest thing to get back and Nokia themselves doesn't seem to have a clue how to reclaim it back either. Good luck and I hope it works out for you.

JUDE, having a 1GB is the way to go BUT it can be very addictive, you may find yourself putting stuff on it everyday. I have a full length 'high quality' movie on mine and my 1GB is begging me to put on more movies. The length of the movie is 2hr. 5min. and the file size of the movie is 99.7MB...less than 100MB, isn't that good ?
