Nokia E7

ShameOnNokia, 30 Sep 2010You may think its them doing "great" effort. Howe... moreI think Nokia is quite a long ways away from filing bankruptcy. Still they have to make an effort to head it off. If they do not, it will happen eventually. The good news for Nokia is that they do have some time as they are such a big company and are still making huge profits. The bad news is those profits are eroding away to other companies.
I don't see an E7 as a device for users to do photoshopping. It seems to be targetted to business users where the primary use is to check email, messages and calling. For this, the 360x640 resolution should be adequate and the CBD would be a benefit as it provides good readability if you are outside and on the go. A larger screen for this use would be more important than resolution.
As for viewing images, I would expect that higher resolution screens would be better. I haven't used a phone with a higher resolution than my N97. So far, I'm pretty satisfied with my N97 when surfing a web page with images or looking at pictures or videos. Maybe if I regularly used a phone with higher resolution I would not be able to go to a lower resolution.
In any case, I see the main selling point of the E7 is the qwerty and 4" CBD display. Another phone that is more likely in direct competition with the E7 (at least for me) is the HTC Desire Z. The Desire Z also has a qwerty, but with a smaller screen, but higher resolution. These are the two phones that seem to be front runners to be my next phone.
I do agree that Nokia is behind when it comes to developers. It is really sad that there is no native Twitter app for Symbian. The Gravity app is actually a great app for viewing Twitter, but I would have expected a native Twitter app like they have for Facebook.
Nokia is trying to encourage more developers to develop apps for Nokia phones. With Qt, they try to ensure that any work developers do on Symbian will be compatible with Meego. Even though Symbian may be on the way out, if there is an easy transition to Meego, then any apps developers build for the current Symbian phones can be used for the next generation of Meego phones.
It is still going to be an uphill battle for Nokia. Apple's iOS has been well establishd, Android is gaining great momentum and Windows Phone is about to be released with a lot of hype and interest so far.

Here is a couple of screenshot comparisons between the Nokia ClearBlack AMOLED and the Samsung SuperAMOLED. http://www.mobiset.ru/news/text/?id=14097
I'd say the ClearBlack AMOLED seems to be the winner..? I don't know about sharpness (or pixel density) since it's too hard to say exactly where the photographing camera has it's focus, but at least the colors on the Nokia screens seem to be more "true to life". And I like it!

Ibrahim, 30 Sep 2010Why the hell didnt Nokia put a memory card slot on this pho... moreit is unlikely the user would need more mem since it already has a 16gb internal mem. so if u say nokia is stupid, many other phone companies are stupid including apple's iPhone which is a huge success. Before u bash a phone pls use ur common sense like wad is shown in the posting rules 'use common sense'

hayato, 30 Sep 2010Developers for symbian are few, yes. But nokia is doing a g... moreYou may think its them doing "great" effort. However I see it as them doing one last ditch effort to keep from filing bankruptcy. Yes I've read about their joint venture with ATT to pay 10M as a prize for winning developers. Bioseen is pretty much useless. Unless you're going to look for new species in your back yard, pretty much any biologist trying to discover new species will have way better equipments such as cameras with powerful sensors DSLRs. I don't know about you, but i know of very few professionals that want to be doing photoshop on a 4" screen with low resolutions. This is just me, but i feel nokia is too late to the party. They've had a monopoly on the smart phone market for so long that they've gotten lazy. If they were active from the beginning and marketed their OS and tried to lure real developers in they wouldn't be in the mind that they are now. Nokia doesn't have the global recognition that google has, so their venture into a app market failed. Apple has had itunes for the longest time so that attributed to their success with their app store.

pobradovic, 29 Sep 2010Although I also refuse to believe this is a Communicator su... moreDevelopers for symbian are few, yes. But nokia is doing a great effort in encouraging developers to make apps for symbian. Have you heard their project with at&t?
Some of the ideas are really promising. Like:
bioseen- an app that helps environmentalist with new species sightings.
- there is also an app that converts words taken on camera to an editable doc.
- a mobile photoshop
- a sound editor
- an app for emergency geo tagged photo.
And let's not forget the already available ones:
- fx studio
- video editor
- web tv
- plus many more great apps for symbian^1 compatible with ^3 too (eg. X-plore, ttpod, vhome, coreplayer.)
symbian has many useful apps, the difference, is that unlike in apple, you only have few choices under 1 category, which means, no more pile of repeated apps. I don't think if it's a good thing or bad for you.

This phone is announced in september 2010. Knowing nokia this phone will be released in july 2011.
By then you already have dual core processors, android 3.0, superamoled on ALL phones and tons of other features on the phone. The e7 is already outdated when it was announced in september 2010. How would it look in 2011?

hayato, 30 Sep 2010When you look at it on a dark side. You can assume that nok... moreI've also used Symbian for a good chunk of time as well. Since 2005 I've used N91 and N80. After that i upgraded to N95, then I went with E71x, then E71-2. After that I've went with N900 while one of my family member got N97. Most devices of Symbian are slow when performing simple functions as web browsing. N97 on wifi loads webpages with lots of images noticeably slower than iphone on same website and same wifi connection. Symbian isn't out dated because it can't do things androids can't because if theres something that you can't do on symbian but theres a demand for it, there will be applications programmed. Its outdated because theres no future for it. Symbian is losing amount of developers quick, and its just not able to keep up. Even if you haven't noticed, Symbian-guru.com even quit symbian/nokia. When someone who was a hard core advocate like Symbian-guru feels theres no hope for symbian thats gotta be telling you something.

ShameOnNokia, 30 Sep 2010but theres where I fail to see your logic. You say nokia ha... moreWhen you look at it on a dark side. You can assume that nokia has purchased a bunch of arm11 processors long ago and they are just disposing all of it. But as i have said before, i don't care. I used symbian all my life, and i haven't encountered any problem.
Somehow, i'm quite lost why you are insisting that symbian can't do much like android. Can you name some? I never used android, though i admit i'm interested in this OS.
And for your suggestion... No. It would not serve my interest.
