I agree it is quite a unnecessary price difference but thats NOKIA for you, they can do it and the product will still be a success.
Yep ive got a N81 rite now and its serving me VERY well, phone is fast, sound quality and battery life is amazing and its a very stable device with the 369mhz CPU from Freescale. BUT the Dualcore of the N82, N95 etc. . . Is better because its got the CPU doing 332mhz PLUS a GPU going at around 220mhz which means that if the CPU is running too many tasks on its own it can hand over all 3D graphics tasks over to the GPU and they can share tasks almost equaly whilest the CPU of the N78, N81, 5700 etc. . . Is running at 369mhz the GPU is doing around 66mhz and so it won't handle as much, still it runs the UI AND GENERAL phone very well i must admit.
N93 successor? Im not sure, im also wondering the same, yep hopefuly at Go-Play we'll see something good. For now im very happy with my N81 and will be adding an N82 soon.

I agree that the n82 is the ultimate imaging flagship device, but for the differences you have mentioned, should there be such a huge difference in pricing? (150 euros)
About the CPU, I think i would go for the cheaper freescale 369mhz CPU. Its a bit wierd because it does better than the duocore 330mhz CPU. The symbian OS is more stable with the 369 CPU and restarts are not as frequent when compared to the other CPUs used. A bunch of examples are the nokia 5700 (which i own), nokia 6120, nokia E51 and nokia N81. Infact, it makes me wonder why they do not use this processor on their flagship devices.
As for the n78, it is more of a music device, even though nokia advertise it as a music, GPS and imaging device. I am more of a music man, so N78 would be the choice for me. It is supposed to come with great sound, plus it has a nice adapter (like the N81). As for imaging, i saw the samples on gsmarena's 'nokia overview at the MWC' and the pictures were actually good. Apart from music, everything else does not need to be the biggest or best, but it must perform well (for me).
As for n96, i agree with you. It will not be as huge as N95 or N73. It barely comes with any changes to the n95-8gb. There are rumors that a super feature packed device will be out in the last quarter of the year.
By the way, what happened to the n93 successor?
Hopefully, these devices shall be announced at the go-play event this year.

Remember that the N82 is an Imaging Flagship Nseries, it has the more expensive TI OMPA2420 Dualcore CPU/GPU Chipset whereas the N78 uses the cheaper Freescale i.mx31l single core CPU/GPU chipset. This means that N82 is superior already when it comes to 3D Graphics, Camera quality, Video recording quality and Video Playback. The N82 will surely cost a little more than the N78, i know im definetly going for N82 in this case.
The N95-8GB is more expensive because of the 8GB Memory, big 2.8inch screen (N82 only 2.4inch), larger battery, and because it is the Nseries Flagship, it gets ALL the best updates First, and is also now getting Auto Screen Rotation.
Don't expect the N96 to be a big hit, it is not meant to be a big sales product, it's a niche device like the N93 and N93i, it will keep its high price for a very long time, the phone we are all waiting for is the N95 successor which may only be announced later this year.

Only time will tell if THIS is the master set available in the market or N82.
I think the price tag will make the difference.
Meanwhile we shouldn't neglect the all respected N95 either.

Very nice phone. I really wouldn't buy it because of the keypad, probably the most important feature in such a device. Also I don't get this trend to have micro USB vs a nice mini USB with a lid...

                  @shams
I agree with you about the pricing. Its a bit worrying. But remember how n95 8GB came out with a price tag of 550 euros? Then a few weeks later n82 came out with an unusually better price tag of 400-450 euros? Both phones actually hav the same specs (except for the 8gb), yet there is such a huge range in pricing.
I think it is the n82 which kind of destabilised the usual pricing trend. Maybe it was due to the fact that it was released during the christmas season.
Another thing i have noticed is that even though the nokia n78 hasnt come out, it seems to have formed a rivalry with the nokia n82 (due to the nokia n73 debate).
With s40 phones, there is currently a rivalry between nokia 5610xpressmusic and 6500 classic over which is the best s40 phone. They both hav the same design, same features, same battery life, but one (6500) has a better camera and tv-out while the other (5610xm) has stronger music capabilities, better sliding mechanism, is lighter and cheaper. (Both have good music players and cameras, but one outperforms the other in a different area).
Coming back to n78 and n82, they basically have the same features, (except for the xenon flash n tv out) but they basically have all the same features.
N82 sports the best camera to date in a phone (5mp with carl zeiss optics, xenon flash and records at 30fps at 640*480 in MP4). It also has a good music player, which is quite louder than most phones (except for music oriented phones like nokia's 'xpressmusic' or samsung's 'ultra' phones ).
N78 also has a carl zeiss camera, but it is at 3.2mp, LED flash and records at 15fps in MP4. This is also quite a good camera, but N82 wins in this aspect. However, when it comes to music, the n78 is said to come with music capabilities of n81 or n91. Eìther way, it should be louder than n82.
Another musical bonus is the much talked about fm transmitter. Since no other phone in the current market has this feature, we cant tell if it is worth the praise or not. We shall only know when it comes out.
However, just like the s40 phones which offer good performance for their features, the n82 definitly does the same. From the specs i have seen, the n78 should also provide top-notch performance.
The debate over the n82 and n78 is a big one and shall have everyone talking about it (until nokia n96 or SE XPERIA comes out).
Personally, im still undecided over which one to get.

It's just the most optional phone ever seen
except it doesn't have the infrared option
but there's nothing more better than this Nokia N78.

This n78 is scheduled to be released in May. It is supposed to be priced at 350 euro, which i dont get!!!!!!!!!

It cant be more expensive than the n82 which is already selling under 350 euro, even close to 300 euro in some places.......

I really would like to own the n78, and would pay upto 270 euro, but can i buy it with this price by July?????????????

Can anybody tell me what the price will be by july in Asia!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

well it's cool and has lots of features and NOKIA are user friendly phones not compared to sony ericsson it has only few features and b4 purchasing the SE phones you must buy a memory card that's too expensive not like NOKIA they have memorycard free inside which is great... and I have made a mistake for choosing SE and now I'm going for Nokia phones and not SE phones anymore and N-series phone are the best phone ever made the original and all the NOkia phones are the best too...NOKIA now rock my world

                                      And for SE nuthuggers:
My first and last SE phone - K750i was replaced by Taiwan i-Mobile 902 which serves me much better then K750i just 'cause the keypad backlight is still working, joystick is working fine and there is no need to flash new firmwares every month UNLIKE K750i. ,.!..
