ANONYMOUS, 23 May 2010the phone is great! over-all features and packaging is grea... moreAs a true Nokia Fan, I think a camera cover is not that important.
I have had my 5800 for about an year now in very rough use, still there isn't a single scratch on its camera lens.
The N8 lens is even made of a better scratch resistant material so it will have an even better life span.

ANONYMOUS, 23 May 2010the phone is great! over-all features and packaging is grea... moredont worry, it uses a scratch resistant lens glass, and if I'm not mistaken, better material than it used to. So if you use this phone normally, it wont scratch, unless you try to scratch it intentionally

the phone is great! over-all features and packaging is great!
one thing that turns me off is that, it has no camera lens cover!!!!!!!!!!
i believe camera's lens are sensitive and nokia produces phone with camera cover even if the phone has lower megapixels....
but why in the world have you forgot designing this device without cover???????
my n82 device is a legend! its camera cover is perfect for it gives a long lasting protection and a lifetime durability while this new n8 which has no camera cover has lower lifespan and lower durability therefore it's not a perfect design for that wonderful features of the phone.....
nokia, please re-design the phone with camera cover.....
i'm calling the public especially the nokia power-users to please support me with this concern... thank you!

Before talking about specs some people should learn how to read them.
Symbian^3 use hardware acceleration for 2D and 3D. The CPU is still used for sending instructions to the GPU for example but it is the graphic chip that is doing the biggest part of the job.
Same thing for recording and playing HD videos. The N8 use a dedicated (and powerful) chip for these tasks (a Broadcom BCM2727 accordind to tweakers.net).
Since the two most intensive tasks are handled by a dedicated processor, what will the CPU have to do ? Do I need a 1GHz cortex A8 if I want to type text, downloading podcasts, and listening to music at the same time? On Symbian the answer is definitively NO.
Thanks, Nokia was smart enough to use a CPU that doesn't limit these dedicated chips. And they didn't use a too powerful CPU which would eat the battery unnecessarily.
Why is the 640*360 resolution still a good choice for a smartphone in 2010? Well first, a lot of smartphones are still sold with lower resolution (QVGA is even coming to Android).
And more importantly, this resolution is exactly 1/4 of 1280*720 (HD-Ready) and 1/9 of 1920*1080 (Full HD). It means that your HD content will be displayed full screen with no black bands and that it is easier for the hardware to adapt the resolution of the video to the resolution of the screen.
Don't forget that this device is really about media consumption and creation.

Wow, I am now seeing a lot of haters lose common sense just commenting on this forum. lol, you guys are pathetic.
The only problem I actually see here is the OS, I really hope it will be better than Symbian^1 as they said. Spec-wise, when the N97 was released it had great features but the shitty OS brought it down. On the other hand haters stop telling how bad N8's OS would be because you haven't tried it yet!!! Though if the OS is a let down I might soon become a hater too.
I wish they'd release it sooner. I'm so excited ;)

i have seen some early benchmarks with this already. they used fpc bench 3d and it scored 54% better than omnia hd there so omnia hd has 2/3 of it's power. i think n8 would score even better if it is final version and the benchmark is harder, because all tests ran at 60fps, which was maximum for fpc bench.

phonewatcher, 23 May 2010...its funny how you argue with specs..
android phones a... moreIt's 2 different things to have a working OS that works fine / fast than having an extremely fast and powerfull mobile phone on an OS that can run 720p movies with 6-8k bitrate and so on for example.
Running 720p movies with 6-8k in bitrate requite a very powerfull CPU on mobile phones today as long your not running the movies via the GPU.
Or to run games with no stuttering at all with very high fps. Then you need a pretty powerfull CPU to run them very smooth.
Having a powerfull GPU just means that you can run the games with much higher graphic than other phones for example. Or that the game makers can make games with higher graphic.

Tom-Helge, 23 May 2010Yes, but iPhone have a very low resolution screen to begin ... moreyes, but they release 3 generation of iPhone without changing the res at all?
by the way, the price 470 euro, is a pre order price, I'm sure that it'll be cheaper after the phone actually realeased. And maybe in your country, X10 is a little bit cheaper than 470 euro, but in my country, X10 priced at 555 euro until now, and more expensive the first time it released here.
iPhone in here is priced at 680 euro, and maybe in here, the N8 released price is around the amazon pre order price, 470 euro. It sucks here...

...its funny how you argue with specs..
android phones are afraid to use slower cpu.. NOKIA is proud to use underclocked CPU's.. see the 5800 @ 434mhz.. it workin.. and fast enough even @ 128mb ram..
higher cpu speed like htc's means less effective.. Can android phones do that???...

Anonymous, 23 May 2010Larger res than iphoneYes, but iPhone have a very low resolution screen to begin with.
But anyways, if the price is right, also 470 euro, then this phone is not worth the money.
A Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 is acutally a little cheaper than the Nokia N8 then.
But don't take me wrong about what i have said earlier about the N8. I still like this phone as it is, even if some of the specs are a bit low.
So i would take this phone any days over any iPhones though.

i think N8(370euro) screen resolution is outdated but it is still acceptable compare to HTC Wildfire(300euro). I'll buy 5800,n97mini than that HTC WildFire.

N8 is for not for geeks ......
So geeks buy Samsung galaxy s , x10 etc for 1Ghz or dont post stupid comments on n8.....
N8 is for larger audience (not geeks).....
