GSMArena, please post this review up ASAP! I desperate need of a good, trustworthy and unbiased review!

My contract ends on the 3rd of November, so I need to decide if the N85 is my cup of tea before then.

    Thanks in advance!

The N85, HOW IS IT AS A PHONE, does it receive well in poor signal areas, or is it like the new samsung good camera etc, but hopeless as a phone?

This should be the i8510 forum since all that happens here is fanboys talking about it. What happened to n85?

Anonymous, 24 Oct 2008Samsung GT-i8510 INNOV8 vs Nokia N96 vs Nokia N85 : Hardwar... moreThanks for the great report. I do have already INNOV8, Omnia, and E66. But I look for a good Nokia S60 platform to use for puting programs and taking phone calles. My E66 is just a garbage in preformance and quality. So, N85 would be good replacment for me to change E66 to N85. No care about Game or video. Only care about good Nokia N series. If I need to take a photo then I would use my Sony Cyber Shot camera and if I need to play game or watch video then I would use my Iphone/Ipod Touch. Why would of use my N85, INNOV8 or Omnia to watch movie when Iphone is best in media and the size of the screen. What I a mtryign to say can not get all the best functions out of one machine.

Why will no contract operators release the N85 on contract as it available sim-free,it seems totally odd as you usually get the choice ever getting it contract or sim free,i hope it becomes available soon as i have read loads of reviews about the phone, but you can never trust some reviews as you have your own opinion about the phone until you get it,Nokia should have stalled the N96 an made the N85 the main phone to boost there sales, and paying £350-£400 for a sim-free phone nowdays is not everybody liking an to expensive,so until the N96 stock is cleared the N85 might not become available while December-January way to late so people will turn there backs on the N85 an buy another mobile instead

Samsung Techwin and Samsung Electro-Mechanic, two of the Samsung Electronic subsidiaries, have already developed 8 megapixel camera modules with 3x optical zoom.

The module has an autofocus performance improved by 57%, a 1/2.5 inch CMOS sensor and lens that support F2.85.

A Samsung Electro-Mechanic official unveiled that the first handset to come with 8 megapixel and 3x optical zoom will be released in early 2009.

Even more, Samsung manufacture is also working on a 12 megapixel camera module that will be smaller than the 8 megapixel one.

Anonymous, 24 Oct 2008Samsung GT-i8510 INNOV8 vs Nokia N96 vs Nokia N85 : Hardwar... moreU forgot to mention the negatives of the innov8.
It is one of the biggest and heavies phones released this year making its egronomics horrible. Much worse than even n96. Secondly, due to the power hungry processor, 3d graphics accelerator and lack of power utilization usually seen on nokia devices, the innov8 manages to quickly drain the high capacity 1200mah battery. Most users have reported that it will not go on for more than a day. Its battery life is comparable to n96 (which enjoys power saving hardware and software, but the battery life still isnt adequate).
Another negative is that the innov8 will not receive updates to fix the existing bugs or improve performance (this is only enjoyed by nokia phones at the moment).
Another thing to note is that even though it has a faster cpu clockrate, its UI doesnt seem to be as fast as previous models like 5700xm or 6120c.
The lack of dedicated music and gaming keys deployed on the n96 and nv5 limits the user experience of the innov8. Benchmark results cant compare to adequate landscape mode playing.
So even though innov8 enjoys the best hardware at the moment, there is much room for improvement on egronomics, power saving techniques and extra hardware for ease of use.

TI OMAP 2430 model are the 2nd generation of TI OMAP chips, 2420, powers multiple hi-end Nokia smartphones(N93, N95, E90, N82) and has in fact an integrated 3D accelerator.
The improvement from 2420 also extremely numerous. The CPU frequency has been pulled up to 450MHz from previous value of 330MHz. The chipset can work with high definition camera(> 5 MP) and it take less than a second to take shot. The rest important point about 2430 hardware are an upgrade TWL4030 module (TWL 92230 was used in 2420). TWL4030 is multifunctional solution providing access to numerous codecs, dedicated audio processing module, noise filters, and so on.
Samsung i8510 is the first Samsung smartphone to fully utilize the potential of the hardware graphics accelerator. It is an absolute requirement for processing 8 megapixel images, real-time VGA video decoding with separate audio signal processing(done by dedicated DSP, excluding the possibility of using the music player and camera at the same time). The graphic accelerator can now handle twice as few polygons per second, commonly used to power the best gaming phone.
Nokia N85 utilizes the same hardware as N78, N81, and N79. Freescale is cheaper solution for the most expensive TI OMAP 2430. The lack of 3D accelerator is blatant in the Jbenchmark 3D test. N85 lags behind in other test as well. Despite the lags seen in the test, N85 audio quality is the same with N96, a bit above than N78, but a bit below than Samsung GT-i8510 INNOV8.

                          Battery:

                          - Samsung i8510 : Standard, Li-Ion 1200 mAh, Stand-by Up to 310 h, Talk time Up to 8 h 30 min

                          - Nokia N96 : Standard, Li-Ion 950 mAh, Stand-by Up to 220 h, Talk time Up to 3 h 40 min !!!!!!!!

                          - Nokia N85 : Standard, Li-Ion 1200 mAh, Stand-by Up to 360 h, Talk time Up to 6 h 50 min

                          Camera:

                          - Samsung i8510 : 8 MP, Video VGA@30fps, QVGA@120fps

                          - Nokia N96 : 5 MP , Video VGA@30fps

                          - Nokia N85 : 5 MP, Video VGA@30fps

                          Conclusion :

                          - Samsung GT-i8510 INNOV8 has faster hardware performance, the best camera, excellent sound - DNSe 2.0 (Digital Natural Sound engine), excellent build quality, good battery, good price etc. while Nokia N96 is the slowest most expensive and with just 950 mah battery.

                          - Samsung GT-i8510 INNOV8 fully utilize the potential of the 3D graphic accelerator. It is an absolute requirement for processing the camera, video recording, decoding and playback. Nokia N85 and N96 can't handle this perfectly because the lack of graphic accelerator.

                          - Samsung GT-i8510 INNOV8 is the best gaming phone today. U can enjoy your 3D or HD games running perfectly in 29 fps, while Nokia N85 and N96 only can run below 10 fps. Thank's to dedicated hardware graphic accelerator.
