Well said PDPG(....). HTC produce the S710 and the S730 both of which have two keyboards on each phone: a regular T9 keypad and a slide-out QWERTY. A superb design.
The_Nootz, you should take note that the S730 is smaller in size and lighter in weight than the N96. So you should rid yourself of the fixation that QWERTY=big phone. If you read my earlier texts you will see that there are a plethora of designs that can incorporate QWERTY and still keep the phone compact.
AGC, the only way you can write faster using T9 is if the QWERTY is badly made with little tactile feedback. Note that the world record for speed writing on a phone was achieved with QWERTY input. The problem with T9 is that it guesses the word you are writing. One therefore has to double check that T9 has guessed right. This slows one down. Furthermore with a QWERTY you can write in your language or dialect.
E-mail, office document editor, posting on the browser are all better done with a QWERTY input. This phone has all these features minus the Q. Is it too much to ask for after 25 N series phones?
Look at SE X1; this is a QWERTY based phone with reasonable multimedia features. People are jumping hand over foot to buy it and it is not even out yet! The N96 and the SE X1 were announced at the same time yet the latter has well outpaged the Nokia in terms of user opinions and reviews. There is obviously a hungry market for this type of phone: QWERTY + N series features in a compact design.

I'm not going to discuss anymore about the purposes of this device. There are many, that is for sure, but how the N96 will manage them remains to be seen.
About the QWERTY keyboard (again), I'm not that sure it would reduce the "population of unsatisfied users".
The main thing: it's the best Nokia has to offer at the moment. I think that everyone agrees with that.

oh i almost forgot....
the convenience of typing or texting using a normal keypad or a qwerty keyboard depends on the user.no need for further explanation.
HTC S710 however managed to give its user a choice of using qwerty or a normal keypad in one phone. if only this mechanism was applied on n96 i presume there will be more n96 potential buyers and a less population of unsatisfied consumers.

Oh and not to get fully into the qwerty debate with you all, because this is my own isolated experience, but I really type much faster on my n95 than I can on my samsung i600 (which is a normal qwerty setup). Qwerty becomes especially difficult to use during single-hand operation. I totally recognize the benefits for some, but personally, I'm much faster on a normal keypad with t9

anyone know if the slider is significantly different from the n95-1, 2, or 3? I currently have an n95-3 and I always think the slide could be improved upon. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

those few applications that runs on VGA resolution will make the difference.that alone, is "reasonable" enough.
how could you say or limit the purposes of N96? you mentioned its capabilities so why not maximize its capabilities with the help of qwerty? besides its a plus.
i will want n96 with or w/o qwerty if its for free. ^_^

THIS IS ONE AMAZING PHONE.
I cant wait to get it, iv held off for ages on getting the Nokia N95 thinking something better is around the corner.
Now they have done = Tv,+ n95 upgraded WAW Great, my ideal phone,
but Im guessing Freeview would also be an amazing idea on a phone like that then?
anyone else agree or would that be pushing it?

I'm not saying that a 2.8 inch display is small. And I wasn't saying that a VGA res on such a screen and on such a device would be useless. But be reasonable. Most applications run on QVGA, including games.
And about the QWERTY keyboard, you said yourself that this phone is not bad without it. But this keyboard is needed for intensive typing (Office, email, messages), which is not N96's purpose (although it is capable). And who needs what? An N96 with QWERTY or a desktop keyboard connected to it ? :)) I guess neither of them.

unfortunately your thinking is regressive. Remember that the N96 has the ability to view AND edit office documents. Therefore typing with a QWERTY would be very useful; or are you telling us that Nokia put this feature in as a gimmick? There have been at least 25 N series phones. What is wrong with one of them having a QWERTY? As for the screen of course VGA is quintessential in a modern device. It shows four times the detail of QVGA therefore graphs, tables, charts and images will be much sharper. Do not be an enemy of progress with your regressive ideas.

n96 with a qwerty is bad? guess you'll say no.though i get the idea that this is not a business phone. anyways,nowadays its not only professionals who desires for qwerty.qwerty is not only for professionals. n96 would be "more striking" with the qwerty but im not saying that is bad w/o it.
hope i see you outside your house with you stupid "desktop keyboard"
connected to your own n96(once you have it).how can you give a piece of an advice if you can hardly apply it to yourself?

In my childish opinion, I was saying that, IF the screen is big enough, a higher resolution is welcome. And you understand what that means.
And about the QWERTY keyboard, I meant that adding it on a device like N96 is needed IF the phone is dedicated to business environments (lots of typing etc.). Besides, this keyboard would make it a brick compared to its current size, and again, the same old story about the size of the device, blah, blah...
Congrats to Nokia for keeping the size of N96 reasonable, compared to is breathtaking features.
To everyone.
If you really want a VGA+ resolution on a 3+ inch device and a QWERTY keyboard, go for a UMPC or a PocketPC, or any other similar solution. This device is made for something else.

About the high resolution screen... What do you want, to watch movies with a magnifying glass?:)) Cause you can't distinguish pixels on a 2.8 inch. How many phones have you seen with a VGA resolution and with a screen smaller than 3 inch?? For the multimedia purpose, the important thing is the SIZE of the screen, not the resolution (unless the screen is bog enough), that is, at least, in my humble opinion.
And now, to everyone obsessed with the QWERTY keyboard.
People, if you really want such a keyboard, buy an UMPC or a PocketPC that supports it. But if you want an N96 with QWERTY, then take your desktop keyboard and connect your phone to it, that would make you happy. Oh brother...
