Minu, 04 May 2023The Xcover was released more specifically for business and ... morerugged smartphone ... is a rugged smartphone. Both models may covers the same area of consumers. What will buy some one is what he likes. All a did is to say the small differences between both devices.

atichko, 03 May 2023While I was a fan of the xr20 the only things that sound be... moreI would call the XR21 a sidegrade, and like you say it is probably not worth it for current XR20 owners especially since it will only get one more OS upgrade than the XR20 despite coming to market almost 2 years later.
If I were a new customer looking for a rugged device that I could also use daily then the XR21 seems very appealing compared to the competition.
It definitely feels like there is less attention to design and detail than the XR20: the partially exposed metal frame is now completely covered (which makes sense because it scratches, but it looks less interesting), the 3 LED flashes are now only 2, no lanyard hoop, USB 2.0 instead of 3.0 on the XR20, wireless charging is gone and the camera housing is just generic now.
On the upside the 695 chipset is more powerful than 480 in the XR20 (but same modem and GPU), display has 120hz refresh rate, wired charging is now 33W, there are 2 programmable buttons, and a larger battery capacity inside a smaller and lighter package. DX+ glass on the camera is a positive as it does make a meaningful difference on the X30 when it comes to optical clarity.
The XR21 also retains and maybe even improves the hidden strengths of the XR20: excellent GNSS coverage, very good network reception and support (does the XR21 support CDMA and EVDO like the XR20?), barometer. The IP68 rating has added IP69K, operating temperature range is still great, and the display remains Gorilla Glass Victus.
I would like to see a teardown of the XR21 to look at the layout of internal components as this is probably an area where HMD have made some hidden improvements. As always there are a lot of people who complain but will probably never use or appreciate things like the fantastic multiband GNSS support.

atichko, 03 May 2023Now you mention Fairfone, hmd should look at that small Dut... moreThere are different degrees of repairability, and trade offs for the different approaches. The G22 costs a fraction of the Fairphone, and removable batteries have much smaller capacity and add to device size. I would also prefer a larger capacity for a rugged device, if I were using it to track a hike I don't want to switch out the battery and break up my route for example.
I agree that the G22 is a strange case, the internal layout is not really dissimilar from a lot of budget phones so the repairability aspect is simply making the backpanel easier to remove, pull-tabs on the battery and the availability of parts and instructions. Oh, and it will not void warranty.
The problem is who would want to repair such a device when it could be more economical to buy another cheap phone to replace it? Especially as the most likely cause of damage would be throwing at a wall when the slow chipset bugs out. Maybe the G22 is just to test the market appetite for repairability, I'm sure lots of people agree with it in the abstract but actually we want the shiny new device in reality.

This is why I got a Nokia 8. No removable battery but it makes sense for slim yet durable aluminium unibody. Simply the most perfect phone ever released!!

atichko, 03 May 2023Now you mention Fairfone, hmd should look at that small Dut... moreThey definitely can make modular phones popular, considering that they're the only brand staying true to form, despite the ODM outsourcing

atichko, 03 May 2023While I was a fan of the xr20 the only things that sound be... morei repaired phones in a shop for a few years,
and it was remarkeable how much more fragile oled is compared to IPS.
many times the glass wasnt even broken the oled just became fully black.
if this phone markets itself as being more dureable then maybe this is the reason they chose IPS.
good on them tho.
1/10 ppl suffer bad eyestrain from (am)oled screens.
i hate oled so bad that i fear they will one day stop making phones without ips screens!
