Huawei Ascend Mate7 review: Stargazer

17 October 2014
The Huawei Ascend Mate7 is the company's first phablet ready for primetime, with two credible midrangers in the Mate series giving Huawei the confidence to stand up to rival flagships. Never mind the digit in the title, the Mate7 is actually a 6" device...

Very good smartphone in general. But the battery never lasted more than 16 hours.
I've tested it with cpu-z it says the battery capacity is 3000 mAh only.??!!

Anonymous, 22 Oct 2014Nice looking phone, but I wont buy it...because it's name is... moreYeah, go buy the Note 3 and stop whining.

I'm currently using it and i have no complaints whatsoever, the only drawback is that the battery life is not comparable to the Mate 2, but still it gets you through the day.

Don't look at the total battery , it's affected by poor 3G call which "only" lasts 20 hours, which I suspect is due to network compatibility issue (don't know where reviewer tested it and which model he used - it has tons of variants). Look at the web surfing and video playback battery scores.

Guys, don't pay attention to the battery rating. You should notice from using android phones how inconsistent standby drain can be on every device. Unless gsmarena do the battery test at least 3 times and and use the average, and test every phone in the exact same manner (same apps, same signal, after fresh restart etc) I take all their results with a grain of salt

Doing something like making a phone call before letting the device go standby will make it drain 3x faster. It sounds impossible but its true and I've tested on many devices.

Maybe it'll be an update I hope to optimize things since I wanted to show off at the dinner table wen its pull out ur phone time. I guess I'll have to wait to see what the G7 has to bring

To start, I have some admiration towards Huawei for their courage at having started their own Kirin SoC development for their product line. While they're not exactly a small fry, outside of mobile/handset making biz, they're the world's largest networking + telco EQ maker for some time now. So despite being relatively new to the phone biz, they've made some particularly huge calculated risk taking.

That said in regards to the topic, I feel that it's time for Huawei to ante it up, realize that good hardware alone just won't cut it and strive for the best balance. Also batt life tests not just done by GSMarena but multiple other mobile tech news sites for AM7 proves that there's a glaring gap for improvements maybe for both under the hood firmware's bg/system apps and SoC power management.

You just gotta know that there's something seriously wrong when your product that has a whopping 1000mAh EXTRA batt over any competition on avg have either lost a bit (about 20 mins less than a Z3) or just manages to get equal to. If I'm the guy in charge on AM7 I'd be already sending my resumes out, not to rub it in but yeah.

Also for Huawei's ongoing current kernel sources along with SoC documentation dev-UNfriendly status, that's not acceptable and it's something that needs to change especially if we're talking about playing in Android space. Should this has been the case from the get go, AM7's current batt life problem could have maybe been rectified if external devs can look at the underlying code side of factors.

I luv d phone anyway, d battery is a disappointment @ d overall test but i use my phone for browsing and watching movies till it goes off in a day , so I wouldn't have problem with that.......going for d screen resolution and fingerprint scanner instead of mate 2. afterall my beloved Sony z3 compact will handle d rest as long as it can.
