Samsung Galaxy S6 review: Subject Zero

13 March 2015
Choose one word to describe the Samsung Galaxy S6. Gorgeous. Powerful. Special. Different. Thank you. That will do. Galaxy S5 has only one of these under its belt and hint... it starts with a P.

Main disadvantages
No water or dust protection
Rather pricey at launch, including really steep memory upgrade premiums
No user-replaceable battery
No microSD slot
No FM radio
No stereo speakers

These are dreadful disadvantages for a priceyupgrade. Come to think of it s5 or a7 can still match it.

Anonymous, 16 Mar 2015Its not about not putting things in... its about taking out... moreWhile agree with your remarks about non-removable battery and no-SD support, I can not agree with the "no good battery" remark.
S6 battery is good even now(read the article) and better than iPhone6.
Remember how S5 also didn't have such good battery before the first updates????
    S6 is not released yet.
Bet on , that after the release and first updates will have even better battery life than now.
Making review before the release is nothing but US iPatriotic move.

All the phones , even your iCrap, before the release are not optimized, and after that get update. GS5 before the first software updates had not so good battery life like now.
BTW: Even now S6 has better battery life than iPhone6 though.

The only potential rival to S6 is iPhone 6, so I guess that's the reason why Samsung has abandoned the removable battery and the sd card slot.

Anonymous, 16 Mar 2015Its not about not putting things in... its about taking out... moreYup, Samsung is catering to the "don't know/don't care" iPhonesk people. Less functionality is what they want.

No it wont as it only has the worst battery life of all...

If Samsung is trying to convince us they're going all-out 'reboot', minimizing hardware for aesthetics and are serious about wireless charging - why didn't they just remove the USB port as well?

... maybe it's time for the S6 Active to shine??

Piyal, 16 Mar 2015It's a fail. If s6 was better looking than iphone or htc m9... moreI'm late to this huge comments list 'party' but I agree with the principle of what you're saying.
If they were prepared to sacrifice all the hardware benefits they've omitted fromthis device in order to achieve a more 'premium' feel - with Samsung's pricing, competition and sky high expectations - the last they had to do was better the aesthetics of the likes of HTC & Apple. I don't believe they've achieved that. Maybe the Edge does but I can't convince myself that what they've done is enough to justify this device bring a good idea and a success.
I could be wrong - time will tell!

Keep up the discussion people! :))

                          What I don't like:
                          1. Poor battery life.
                          2. No SD-card
                          3. Glass on the back (was a failure on Sony)
                          4. Again we get bloatware no one cares about. I wonder when this companies will get in their "heads" that we don't rent devices/software but buy them. I don't want a devices to spy on my habits, cloud sync my personal files or to act like targeted advertising; and eat my battery in the process.

Lastly, as a personal note, I don't like the design.

My only issue with this review (and I love GSM and their reviews, always fair) is that the handset hasn't been released yet, and all of this is based on pre-release handset... surely this review should have been done after the official retail handset has been used (there is still a month of tweaking that can happen) as well as day one updates, etc. I fear this has been rushed out to get net hits and to beat other sites as opposed to giving the handset a decent review... :/ which is far less than what this flagship deserves...

I believe they will have more success with the S6. Most contracts will cover a 2 year period and this is where build quality keeps phones relevant. It's unfortunate they couldn't include expandable storage, but considering why they left it out, its understandable. Unless phones can reach diving ratings for waterproofness I would not attempt to get it wet, phones are not moisture magnets and as it is there will always be people who will let you know that their Sony Xperia failed the water test, so why risk it? I agree that it would've been better to add it especially since they managed to do it on the S5 mini with no terminal cover, but that's why they have the active model coming out. I stll feel that shock proof should also be considered and not just water and dust. This phone is meant to be beautiful and wont fit in wet, dusty and rocky environments.

It's a fail. If s6 was better looking than iphone or htc m9, than the removal of sd card slot and removable battery was justifiable. But It's not better looking than any of those phone that I've mentioned. So it failed to achieve what it tried to do in the first place, hence an utter failure. We are not sheeps or insects, who are attracted to shiny good looking objects, we are intelectual beings. We don't want another iphone.
