Sony Xperia Z5 Compact review: The overachiever

7 October, 2015
When it comes to the Compact family, Sony has quite a reputation to live up to. The Z3 Compact is arguably one of the company's most-successful models.

Ale, 09 Oct 2015Maybe, but that would just be a concession from Sony that t... moreThis has been an option since the kitkat and SD801 days. If you look in the power management section of settings, the stamina mode option can be both toggled and entered. Once you enter stamina mode, there is an option called "extended usage." It says that it will "restrict device performance to increase battery time."

If you can interpret this, it means they UNDERCLOCK the cpu. It has nothing to do with heat, but everything to do with battery savings

AnonD-391800, 09 Oct 2015Sorry to burst all you Sd810 trolls'es bubble, but z5 only ... moreAh TannHouser! I was wondering when you would bring your particular brand of Sony obsessed lunacy to the party!

You say "Z5 and its variants ARE the best flagship phones at this moment."

Well that is your opinion pal (which of course you are welcome to) but it carry's no more or less weight than anyone else's, in fact, as you are known on here for your obsessive pro Sony bias, I would say your opinion has a tad less oomph to it.

Still defending the 810 to hilt (despite increasing evidence to the contrary) I see, and for the sole reason being that it is the SoC used in the Xperia line you so adore. Had Sony opted to use a chip from another OEM, I highly doubt you would care one way or another about the 810!

the tech nerd, 09 Oct 2015It doesn't require down clocking as it has duel pipe soluti... moreIt may very well require down clocking, I can speak from experience to the fact that the dual heat pipe and thermal gel solutions applied (to the Z5 at least) do not work. Now maybe they do on the Z5C though, it is a thicker bodied device, so may have more space available for thermal dissipation perhaps???

Clocking the 810 lower seems to have done the trick on the OnePlus 2, as far as I know there have been no performance issues relating to 810 thermal control reported on that device???

boomchaka, 07 Oct 2015The note 5 is ridiculously large compared to the Z5C maybe ... more...same camera. if software of cam will change it will be miracle.

Adiyel, 09 Oct 2015Yes they do. They have modes for performance, power-saving,... moreIt doesn't require down clocking as it has duel pipe solution and a lot of thermal gel ,a lot of people are still trolling Sony for snapdragon 810 but Sony already solved the problem

Sony phones are really misunderstood. To me they are the most technical, in short the best phones (in light of recent releases).

The Z5 Compact is just another great phone. Would like to clear a few things though.

                  1. The phone that they reviewed does not have the latest camera UI (as said in the review). It has improved vastly and the software is also leaps and bounds ahead of the current one.

                  2. Audio is great but i am not impressed with the audio levels.

                  3. The phone does not overheat at all. There is a video on GSMArena which shows that the Z5C can record upto 40mins of 4K video which is just AMAZING as we know that 4K recording makes the processor go crazy hot. Also Z5 series are the only phones that come with dual heat pipe. A lot of thermal paste is also there. Sony's technical solution is just amazing.

Also, Z3C was tested using on KitKat and the Z5C is on Lollipop and as we know Kitkat is far better and stable and the sick lollipop.

                  4. I prefer it to have a 720p screen and 2GB Ram (LPDDR4). The fact that 1080p screen and 3GB would just have made things worse (battery), i was former was the right thing to do, which they did.

                  5. What i personally think is that Sony (infact all companies) should ditch Android Lollipop and go with Android Marshmallow. Lollipop has a lot of issues and i think that most phones instead from benefiting from it have had more issues.

                  6. Again, the camera is really really great and not other phone has a multi aspect sensor. Also with the new update, the Superior Auto Mode will not just be limited to 8mp but shall be able to use the full potential of the sensor that is 23mp. And if you check the image samples in the review, the pictures are really great. Much amazing than the previous generation.

                  7. The fingerprint sensor is also of of the best implementations on an Android and its location is just amazing and most practical.

                  8. True the volume button placement is weird (bad) but considering the size of the phone it is not an issue. Although now zooming while clicking pics can be done easily.

Overall, i think that Sony has moved in the right direction and in no way is it a downgrade from the Xperia Z3 Compact. Yes the price is high but it is because that you get a flagship phone in a Small form factor. It is still cheaper that many many other flagships.

                  Cheers

                  It's and UPDATED comment

AnonD-399825, 08 Oct 2015for every positive feature people provides, awaits double-n... moreDespite the eccentric tone I fully agree. Who cares if it's 300 nits or 280? Who cares if it's 78db or 82? They all take good photos, they all surf the web, they all play you favourite game.

What matters is things that --really-- make a difference to your experience with the phone. Sony has so many aces here:
                    - Waterproofing
                    - Super battery
                    - MicroSD
                    - Far more practical Fingerprint scanner
                    - Style
                    - Did I mention style??

Samsung has its thing with the Edge, when they implement some nifty controls for it it will really be interesting. Apple has their brainwashing, and don't get me wrong, that is the -perfect- business strategy.

But when it comes to free-thinking, objective individuals, Sony has all the home-runs. The killer additions that --change-- what you can do with the phone. And I'm betting they've got some crafty plan for the 4K screen on the premium, too - I'm betting that will be a mind-blown event coming up.

This is why I love Sony. They focus on things that make a difference, not just chasing the best 0.00001% numbers.

Adiyel, 09 Oct 2015Rooting is actually very easy! There are methods where you ... morerooting is easy for someone who has done it before, not for someone who didn't have a smartphone in his entire life. I have read a lot about rooting and the unlimited advantages with a rooted device but there is a risk. In every root mod I'm reading "please keep a backup before installing it" and stuff like this, meaning there is a chance you can harm it's software.

Don't go hard on me it's only what I have read, it's understandable since I don't have a smartphone yet.

Z5 and its variants ARE the best flagship phones at this moment.
And all your babble and clinging on crap like camera noise, and sd810 heating up, etc..., can not do anything about that fact.
It is overall the best performing and best feature providing phone to this date.
                        Enjoy. ;-)

I had LG G2 ... morethe z5 have dual heat pipe and copper thermal paste to prevent heat, you can watch the 4K test in Youtube. the Samsung Note 5 maybe can record 4K about 20min then over heat and close camera app , but the z5 compact can record 4K about 40min. you can see z5 handle well and Note 5 lose already.

We have reached over 23 and 16mp in cameras on phones, and yet people still complain. Back in 2008 we had 8mp cameras and people were happy with them, so I don't get it.

Nowadays people want more and more for no practical reason, and in mobile phones there is a limit in power, limit that has been obviously reached. Even iphone overheats now.. get what I mean? But people want more and more..
