Sony Xperia Z5 Compact review: The overachiever

7 October, 2015
When it comes to the Compact family, Sony has quite a reputation to live up to. The Z3 Compact is arguably one of the company's most-successful models.

Oh, and don't feel bad about the iPhone purchase. I'm against brand loyalty, and if the phone works it works. I started with a Samsung (the S2 slider version). It was awesome, great cam (better than my ZR), but the low res AMOLED sacked! Since then, I've been with Sony's compact phones starting with the ZR (the true first in the compact line), then the Z3C, and if trends continue, it'll be the Z7C.

If you ask me Sony should have switched both the Z5 and there Z5C to the 808. The Z5 premium however with it's ludicrous 4k display doesn't have much choice in the matter.

I think ARM themselves once put out an official statement saying that they considered 1.3Ghz to be the optimal operating Frequency for an A15 core in a smartphone (considering the increased performance of successive cores like the A57 and A72 I can't see that this number should have gone up)

Your probably all going to hate me for this (more so than you already do :) but after returning the Z5 I bought the iPhone 6S, I have found it's performance to be superb. Even when setting the device up and restoring an iCloud back up (from an earlier iPhone I once owned) two things that normally make any smartphone quite hot, this phone didn't even get warm.

I have yet to play any long gaming sessions on it so can't speak to it's thermal behavioural properties in that regard, but so far it has been highly impressive.

Surprised as to why Sony didn't use the S808 in this thing. It's cooler and less controversial than the S810. The 720p display ain't gonna draw that much of a power, anyways...

Tee, 09 Oct 2015There's no hope for these guys Ale, they talk from what the... moreOh on the contrary, I'm betting TannHauser being a Sony fanatical nut of the highest order has probably bought like 50 or so of them, just to try to influence the sales figures :)

It's the objectivity of his opinion I doubt, Though I hate the term, TannHauser is a true 'fanboy' oozing pro Sony Bias, and like his ilk he will be inclined to prattle on endlessly about Sony Products pro's and reject out of hand any con's (and attack those who maybe voice them).

I don't do brand loyalty as a rule, as such I am free to focus on the pro's and con's on any product I buy, but considering the price we are asked to pay for flagship smartphones I do tend to focus on the con's when I see them.

With regards Snapdragon SoC's, I have in the past had many and enjoyed them all (more or less), it's not until the 810 that I have actually returned one based on the SoC itself.

That said you seem to be more far more level headed than the others I have had exchanges with in this thread and as such I do to accept your opinion of negativity towards your experiences with Snapdragon devices.

After that, there seems to be a progressively worsening current leakage, heat production, and battery waste. You can apparently get away with 1.8GHz just fine, though. Even apple iPhone is having issues trying to clock their processor at 1.8GHz.

And yes I know it's comparing apples and oranges, but trying to clock things too high is problematic. I bet the iPhone 6 SoC will fare better long term than the 6s'

Tee, 09 Oct 2015Cheer up mate, I played a session of gaming yesterday for 4... moreImpressive, and a recent test by Anandtech would seem to corroborate your claims in regards the efficiency of the Exynos 7420 (and I would take their findings over the opinions of the some of the muppets posting in this thread!!!).

Would be eager to see how the Exynos 7420 and Apple A9 stack up efficiency wise, and then add the Snapdragon 820 to that equation when available.

Like I said I believe 2015 has been something of an off year for Qualcomm and that is due the fact that they are out of their element when not implementing their own custom architecture.

Adiyel, 09 Oct 2015This has been an option since the kitkat and SD801 days. If... moreYes your right many phones have had this option for while now, usually is under the 'restrict performance' heading of a power saving function. The problem with this being a proposed solution to thermal issues however is that the power saving function usually comes with a number of other features that have to be enabled along with restricted performance, most namely:

                              1. dimmer screen
                              2. restricted data access

I don't think anyone would be happy to required to run their device in power saving mode constantly due to performance issues of the SoC as standard.

Besides this I believe is different though from actually down clocking an SoC out of the box so to speak. like I said Oneplus seems to have had success by simply clocking the 810 at a max of 1.8ghz, but it seems other OEM's want to maintain that magical 2ghz number for marketing reasons.

At 1.8ghz the 810 seems to behave just fine thermal wise, ok it's performance figures are then more in line with what the 808 offers at least CPU wise (which are by no means bad), but it still has the benefit of the 430 gpu and superior ISP over the 808 (and other smaller advantages).

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Sony attempt to 'fix' the thermal problems the Z3+ was having by issuing a firmware update that did reduce the SoC max frequency, or at least limit the use of the four A57 cores???

Started off at 28 degrees idle, played Asphalt 8, Lara Croft Go, Hungry Shark and some Shadow Fight 2. Max temperature after 45 minutes was a mere 36 degrees... if I was using SD or MTK I'll be exceeding 45-50 degrees by now. I'll say it again, the Exynos SoC is the most efficient chip in the market right now.
