Meizu Pro 5 review: The Prodigy

10 November, 2015
Meizu did such a wonderful job with the MX5 that we were pretty certain a Pro edition wasn't needed this year. As it turns out Meizu thought otherwise and is giving us a bigger and faster Meizu Pro 5, with refined design, blazing-fast chipset and better camera sensor.

When I look objectively, the batterylife isn't that great.

GSMArena tests batterylife @ 50% brightness. Mz Pro 5 has a dismal brightness at 50%, just 102 cd/m2. Other phones have in range of 150-200 cd/m2. This itself makes the batterylife test biased for Mz Pro 5.

What I feel is that batterylife will be good, not something steller. I normally like the display to be at around 200 cd/m2 in normal usage. At that brightness, batterylife will go down by another 30-40% compared to this numbers.

I'd really like some first-hand impressions of whether the display is usable in the sun. Does it fall far behind the S5 or A8 in real use?

It has low maximum brightness but high contrast and high quality glass so I'm just not sure what to expect! Would it beat my Sony Z2 (slightly brighter display but lower quality contrast and glass?)?

Thank you so much for the review. I have my eyes on this thing for a whole month. But I have doubt for its display. Now I know that it's very dim. I'll goo elsewhere , might be Xiaomi.

Should have been noted about poor LTE capabilities (lack of european LTE 800) and about poor international firmware support that contains lots of bugs that never gets fixed. They only care about chinese firmware.

Just got back from a Meizu store and after checking the box out for myself I can say unfortunately the Chinese version only supports three FDD LTE bands. They are 1800, 2100, and 2600. Big disappointment because otherwise it's a stellar phone. The gold version isn't even shipping yet but that's typical of Meizu.

                      A prodigy? DAMN STRAIGHT!

You mix Apple's aesthetics and Samsung Hardware, with a hint of Meizu's magical audiophile audio chip and you get the Pro 5.

                      I'm impressed...I'm really am!

Meizu is underrated outside of China. But their flagships are excellent choices (and cheaper at that).

Well, Flyme isn't to everyone's liking - but it's easy to live with it's shortcomings.

Can't wait for a mini version of this...between 4.7" - 5" screen, same internals, 16MP camera, and a 1080p AMOLED screen. Needs exynos, not a crappy Mediatek SoC!

Not often i bother to read everything but as im on the look for a new phone and this one has been on my mind for a while now, i was very happy for what i read.
500euro for the 64gb is in my country not much. Not for a flagship phone. I guess the end price here will be 600euro .But still i think it's fair for a flagship with these specs.
It's between nexus 6p or meizu pro now..

                                      MX5 had a few short-comings.
Meizu Pro 5 nails it. I can't think of any cons for this phone.
                                      price is also reasonable.
