Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge: Samsung at MWC 2016

20 February, 2016

I love how there's so many people complaining about the S7/S7 Edge not being a major design overhaul this year. Samsung just completely overhauled the design from all of the previous gens with the Galaxy S6, and did an amazing job. Now this release is adding all of the things customers wanted..like a bigger battery, expandable storage, and they made the edge display more useful..not to mention all of the subtle design tweaks like a more curved back for ergonomics including on the S7 Edge, home button changes, more curve to the edge screen with less sharp edges, a smaller camera hump, more pronounced buttons, IP68 water resistance.... yet people complain because it doesn't look completely different. Why completely change a beautiful design right after you make it.....

Wonderful phone. Amazing camera. And what a great specs. I though this phone is more than enough for human.

Negative thing from this phone is, why S7 back body is made by glass. So easily get dirty.

Is "Always On" similar to Symbian's display feature? With Nokias running Symbian OS always displays the date, time & notifications... Hmmm.

They've still kept the KitKat style capacitive buttons.
No influence of material design on these chaps.

Raised camera lens means I would have to keep this thing in a case to feel safe laying it down on surfaces (same thing I did for my Galaxy Note).
As it is now only raised "half a millimetre", perhaps I can find a protector film of same thickness for the back of the phone, to stop the lens protruding.

Samsung-give us a slide over lens cap in future devices and this evil can be forgiven....

The Z5 premium is referred to as a 4K screen, but the software on the phone treats everything as (1920x)1080, except for really high def videos.
So the onscreen 3D benchmarks where the Sony beat the Samsung are not comparing like.
The offscreen numbers are more useful to compare in this instance, as if often the case.

And as another forum poster here asked, not knowing if the exynos or snapdragon variant is being tested makes most numbers less exciting to me.

Yes, the opening line telling us that the chipsets are closer is great reassurance. Either is, of course, overkill for whatever we would do on the phone (VR being a notable exception).

These phones are excellent market entries, and good work to Samsung for not just playing a marketing game (eg camera excites me), and for responding to users Wishlist. (IP rating for water fastness and SD card slot option).

May you have a stellar sales year with these units!!

Adil Khan, 21 Feb 2016So does it support 4K video recording and why degrading fro... moreYes to 4K recording (4K is still waaaay below 12K, and often the extra image sensor space can be used for digital stabilisation).

Not downgraded sensor by being 12million pixels instead of 16 million, it is an upgrade (in low light instances).

If you have a window with a fly screen over it, a 'super fine mesh' with sixteen million holes (to let light through), and replace it with a fly screen that has only twelve million holes, it will let more light into the room. (Less wire blocking the light)

What we need to understand is that if the physical sensor that captures the light is the same size, less 'wire in the way' allows more light to be captured.

This is why lower megapixels on the same size sensor are better at low light.

Three megapixels was good enough print resolution for National Geographic (single page). As most people's monitor are around two million pixels and six megapixels is plenty for an A4 page, why do we need more?

We don't. It is marketing numbers to we the partially informed consumers who think megapixel matters.
Two reasons for greater megapixels is for digital cropping (after cutting out the piece of a photo you want to keep, it may still have three megapixels worth of data) and for poster sized prints (not the realm of camera phones and their tiny sensors).

I would take low light performance every time. It allows better shots, shots without flash become acceptable, more intimate poses etc.

BSI sensors (back side illuminated) is where they moved most of the tech (wires)in front of the sensor that stopped photons (light) being captured, to the back of the sensor, allowing more 'light gathering surface' up the front.

Less megapixels (on the same sized sensor) means more 'light gathering area'.

Lens and sensor and photographers mind are the three important things here. Not megapixels.
