LG G5 vs. Samsung Galaxy S7 edge: Flagship slugfest

24 February, 2016
This is why we love the MWC - some of the best phones of the year were announced almost side by side. Two of the headliners are the LG G5 and the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge and we know how heated the competition between G-series and Galaxy flagship can get.

Anonymous, 26 Feb 2016I also have a note 4.... almost 2 years old. No burn in. So... moreRead carefully and try to understand what I am saying. The point you are missing here is Note 4 or any other Amoled phone didn't have the flexible screen of the Note Edge or S6/S7 edge. The flexible screen is new tech and in my personal experience with S6 Edge it starts burning in in a couple of months, especially from the status bar. This doesn't happen with normal non flexible screen of Note 4 or S5.

Android update is also a very important determinant factor to keep your phone refreshed as new.

Unfortunately, Samsung is the worst company when it comes to android updates.

Where the fark is my official Mashmallow update for my S5 and S6 Edge? I have been waiting for nearly 5 months now and no news at all.

LG and HTC have both updated their 2014 and 2015 flagships.

I swear I won't ever buy another Samsung crap again she in my life!

          Go die Samsung!

Anonymous, 26 Feb 2016Tiny sensor? Half the N8? Lol that's cute. The aperture ... moreThe pictures from the s7 will most likely be better than the n8 pictures, the Nokia is just too slow. But let's take a look at the specs
Nokia: 1/1.83 sensor and F2.8 aperture
Galaxy: 1/2.5 sensor and F1.7 aperture or F2.32 on a 1/1.83 size sensor.
So that's half a stop wider aperture for the galaxy and therefore only 73% sensor size

That combined with the newer technology sensor with faster fokus and way better ISO performance for sure delivers the better results.
The biggest sensor is in the Nokia 808, 1/1.2 in size and that combined in a F2.4 aperture. The galaxy s6 glass on top of that sensor would be only a F3.54 aperture, so for sure the 808 gets more light and has the bigger sensor as well.
Surprisingly enough, technology goes fast and if you know how to use Google, you will find test results that even the galaxy s6 and lg g4 can beat the old 808 or 1020, so yes, the old Nokia phones have bigger sensors, bigger apertures, but no, they don't capture better pictures.

I tested the S7 edge and my wife owns an LG G4.
What amazes me is how come no one ever tests the PRO (MANUAL) mode on these phones? Probably because they have no idea on how to do it properly.
So, here is my feedback Galaxy S7 (the phone I ordered) vs the old G4.

On auto mode the S7 takes great pictures, very very fast and it needs less light compared to the LG. For those that do not use the manual (pro) mode I bet they will not be disappointed.

                          LG G4 - Manual mode.
                          - The LG G4 software is superb. It is exactly what a PRO user would like: Very intuitive, easy to use, fast to access the options, DSLR inspired.
                          - Unfortunately, the phone is quite slow in this mode (much slower compared to auto mode). I don't understand why this is happening but it does and it's annoying. Probably the G5 does not have this problem.
                          - White balance is very very good --> Better than I saw on some DSLR camera (probably due to that laser sensor, beats me). This is the reason you see natural color and not yellow or blue tones in the pictures. It is also fully adjustable so you can tune the colors if you believe they don't match the reality. In the past I made a test vs. galaxy S6 and it's way better.
                          - You can take a picture with almost "0" light with a tripod and it will came out very good (much better than what you can see with your own eyes).

                          Galaxy S7 - PRO Mode
                          - The software is copied from LG (this is the good part). The bad part is that they didn't copy 100% identical. You don't have so many steps for white balance (to completely get rid of that yellow tone). The settings for exposure time are upside - down. Where the G4 manual mode was a pleasure to use the Samsung is much less attractive. This is probably because the designer of this mode didn't use a DSLR camera in it's life.
                          - The phone is very fast in this mode. Wayyy faster than the G4. The focus is very fast.
                          - If you use a tripod during the night you will probably take better pictures with the G4. If you use the phone like a regular user (in auto mode or manual mode) you will surely take better pictures with the S7 because it needs less light for the same level of quality + it focuses much faster and it's faster to react on any input.
                          - On the street during the night I bet you can take better pictures with the S7 vs G4 or V10 or G5 --> The people and moving objects will came up better due the difference in exposure time.
                          - If the PRO mode would be identical to the LG one it would be great. I could not fault this phone camera.

First of all, thanks to the GSMArena team, for this first analogy between the S7 & G5 (primarily the cameras, but everything else too) well done and absolutely keep it up guys (I was waiting for this comparison) & it is needless to say that I definitely agree with you about the lack of stereo speakers in the S7 (I really hope that Samsung will understand it too, & that eventually they will start to incorporate stereo speakers in at least the flagships, S, Note) having said that, this year Samsung really did an excellent job with the S7, by re including the water resistant, increased the battery (at least it's not removable ) & one of my favorite features that it is the lovely SD card slot. So it is almost a complete phone now (almost!). But on the other hand, LG really did an excellent job too, okay every phone have its own pros and cons, but everyone must appreciate that LG did an almost holistic job this year & they really invested a lot in the G5, considering the new complete metal body, the 3 cameras (16MP + 8MP & another front 8MP) & obviously they cost money, plus the innovative modular feature including the removable battery, & small things as FM radio, etc. Sooo, I don't want to say that I prefer the G5, & because I already love the S7 (edge), but on the other hand, I appreciate that LG really did an excellent excellent job with the G5 (despite the few dawns, after all nothing is perfect, unfortunately ) & so I have to admit that i have a bit of dilemma (because in different ways, they are at parallel level, both with their key selling points & dawns over the other too ) if I could, I will buy them both haha, but then it will be a bit too expensive & including an SD card/s of 200GB as well. But apart the sort of joke, generally speaking, in different ways, both are excellent flagship phones. & again, once having said that, even if the S7 is slightly better? it is clear that this year LG really deserve to sell more than ever before, because they really invested a lot in the G5!

Fortunately I still have my N8 and it still makes good photos and records not that bad videos. Still I suppose that G5 won't be even as half poppular as S7. It`s simple people find G5 "ugly" with a smaller battery and a smaller screen. A better camera, better screen (thouh I've had my N8 for about 5 years and its amoled hasn't "died" yet but its obvious as a sunny day that the colours aren't natural there), FM radio (my N8 even has an FM transmitter which I used about 5-7 times for the whole time), module-construction and a metal body are good but they are not great. It's just like two girls, one of which has a beautifull body, perfect face and charm while the other is a a bit above than ordinary girl according to her beauty, but she is a good person who can make a great dish, who is very gentle and clever and she'll do anything for you. Which one would you choose? :D
