LG G5 vs. Samsung Galaxy S7 edge: Flagship slugfest

24 February, 2016
This is why we love the MWC - some of the best phones of the year were announced almost side by side. Two of the headliners are the LG G5 and the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge and we know how heated the competition between G-series and Galaxy flagship can get.

One of the most used features on my current phone (IR blaster) was removed on the S7 and Samsung calls it an upgrade. Thanks, Samsung, for not listening to your users. LG G5 wins this year.

Aspros, 26 Feb 2016In day light, every cameraflagship from 2015 and on is goo... moreYour thoughts exactly mirror mine in this regard. I also have a G2, waited for the G5 (because G3 and G4 were too large and with small battery) and was greeted with a small-battery, huge-bezel abomination. The G5 is *larger* than the S7 Edge ! The G2 had the smallest bezels in business and the largest battery at that time, while the G5 had the largest bezels and the smallest battery. I hope LG will be able to partially fix the G5 by introducing a high-density, 3300+ mAh battery that fits into the "magic slot" but I am not holding my breath. For now, I preordered the S7 Edge. But if LG would have had a 3300+ battery and similar bezels and size to the G2 I would choose their phone because I really like my G2 (still). LG's "always-on display" is a great feature that I really needed but Galaxy S7 also has it along with a larger battery (and a prettier design). So this year it's S7 Edge for me mainly due to the large battery and small bezels.

Both shoot amazing quality pics but i find the brighter and slightly crisper images by the s7 more desirable.

I would prefer S7 over G5 because of more compact size and better battery. But I am a bit disappointed with S7 camera, because it has worse colours and worse dynamic range. When I look at the photo, I just prefer when it is nice and balanced and I dont look at it under the microscope. In my opinion even those low light (HDR) photos from LG5 look better, becasue they are more natural.

None of these are final software so we still have time to decide on which one to buy. I really think Samsung will deal with that yellowish tint in the pics.almost every single flagship these days takes great photos under normal lighting conditions so really looking forward to see a camera which performes as good in low light too, design wise it's the edge7 that I'd like to hold in my hand, only thing that I want to see is the battery life of the two, I'm disappointed with the battery life of my s6.so let's wait for the real world reviews that will truly decide who the winner is.

Even day time room lit with the sun still let's in a lot of noise with an average phone sensor. Even or doors unless it's extremely sunny. Anything but bright sunlight shows a sensors weakness.
Plus that focus makes a great difference in detail

In day light, every cameraflagship from 2015 and on is good enough for me, what they had to develop is low light pics, glad that someone did.
However this is not my priority, my priority is battery endurance, i just cant get enough energy to last for a day without charging and i hate carrying extra chargers or battery banks.
Because of apple's hunting for thiness, thebattery capacity has been sacrificed in 2015, hopefully they will regrow in 2016, i really hated this trend the most.
Good to see that both flagships can carry sd cards again, thats a win for the customers who imposed it!
What will make the difference for me, after the battery performance is bezels, i really hated apple bazels and i loved my G2 for its small bezels, LG have have lost their way though, with every new flagship having bigger and bigger bezels, growing in dimension yet offering smaller displays and less capable batteries.
Its really cool that we have our options to choose from, i applaud LG for their innovations, but my priorities lie at display quality and estate according to its body dimensions, battery endurance, gaming performance and continous support.
In 2015 i ve picked Z5c, now its seems that i am getting s7

                              Photo shots tests aren't consistent.
Hard to tell what is what now.
One with 16:9, another with 4:3,
Understood with G5 with the secondary camera, it can be challenging, so make it consistent all the way for gods sake for a direct comparison.

Gibby, 26 Feb 2016I'm suprised no one has mentioned or commented on the durab... moreDurability is a matter of "it depends" if you expect them to survive a normal accidental drop from reasonable heights, like say hand held height, pant pocket height or hand bag height and still work so as to recover your data, sure they most likely will unless you are extremely unlucky and they fall at the edges at just the right angles to cause the whole front panel to crack the CG4. Even if your phone survives without a cracked glass the scratches and dents are going to be ugly given the nice metal body and everything. So if that's ok then I guess that can be called as "durable"

But if you want it to fall and have no scratches/dents on it you are looking at armor skins and phone covers, which defeats the purpose of aesthetics. This comes down to personal preferences of course.

I personally never cared about a phone's looks because I am going to put that protective cover on it, as long as I has top notch battery life and a great all round camera on it at an affordable price, am all set.

I'm suprised no one has mentioned or commented on the durability of either of these phones.
The curved glass of the edge would worry me but didn't they do something about the metal durability around the edges? (no pun intended)
What really worries me is the durability of the G5. Surely a removable bottom section will have an effect on the overall integrity, especially once it's removed.
I'd also like to see the infamous 'bend test' on both of them! ;)

I'm seeing the most noticeable difference in the daylight photo of the flowers.
If you look at the bottom right corner flowers of the G5 the central yellow part is either blurred or not focused properly. This may be something to do with the 100% focus range of the S7.
Otherwise - difference is subjective colour wise.
Me - I need decent low light / night images.
