Our camera shootout: iPhone 7 vs. Galaxy S7 vs. Xperia XZ vs. LG G5

17 October 2016
Team Fall in the red corner versus Team Spring in the blue. Okay, not really - it's actually every phone for itself, but the newly-launched contenders from Sony and Apple take on the established players from Samsung and LG that have been around for some six months.

Keyhan, 23 Oct 2016Where is king of them? My intent is htc 10Yeah the inclusion of the HTC 10 would have made sense (no pun intended:) as not only is it a very competent shooter, but it doesn't share its camera hardware with either of these four, so would have added its own unique perspective on photography.

But then I suppose you could say the same of a number of other device from the 2016 crop, and if you add them all then a comparison like this could have quickly become saturated and confusing.

[deleted post]Or.....the results simply do not read as you would like them to???

You gonna point the same accusatory finger at DXOMark if (just if) they happen to not give the number one spot to the XZ????

Regarding the XZ and it's taking shots in bright daylight at ISO8000, if true (and I'm not going to speculate as to whether it is or not), then It would appear Sony are prioritising as fast a shutter speed as possible in when shooting.

I find this plausible as the shot to shot time on my X Compact sucks very badly, the processing time required for a single (non-HDR) image can be a full 2 seconds (sometimes more), this could likely be due to all the work the SOC is having to do at producing as clean an image as possible from a shot taken with such high ISO values.

This could also perhaps be the part of the reason behind the excessive heat build up when using the camera app on high end Xperia's?

What amazes me is LG don't spend as much in marketing as Iphone or Samsung. While the price is still high, but not as silly high as the "the other" so that makes it affordable high end with 1 of the best camera on a smartphones.

Note7 owner, 22 Oct 2016Why bother with phone camera sensors, just get a Sony A7. I... moreDigital cameras (including SLR) have had a massive decline in sales since 2010... simply because mobile cameras are so convenient and the quality is becoming so good (not that they could ever match a SLR for low light, telephoto etc).

I have an SLR & camcorder but the majority of my best photos & video have come from my mobile camera... because its ALWAYS ON ME.

If i could only have one camera it would be a good mobile camera.... the majority of people think the same.

Why bother with phone camera sensors, just get a Sony A7. I'm ok with getting a Note 8 without a fancy camera for $400. And use a real camera for photography.

I feel shame to say I still own Samsung Galaxy smart phone. But I proud to say, without doubt my next smart phone will be LG G5. I will get new contract with network THREE end of this month! Woohoo!!! I will never buy any phone if not removable batteries or becoming useless after 2 or 3 years such Samsung brand phones. We consumers should ban any brands if they releasing gadget who works not longer that 2 - 3 years and pressing us to buy its new product!

People think that changing from the 4:3 12MP to the 16:9 9MP setting loses image quality with a lower resolution... IT DOESN'T. All it does is cut a strip of pixels off the top and bottom. Horizontal resolution is identical.

It's quite shocking that the iPhone 7 loses in both areas although i've seen the worst, the Xperia XZ. Ugh, that cracky image when being zoomed in, rather bad white balance. I hope Sony do better next year.

On the other hand, LG G5 is the winner here. And don't forget S7.
