Xiaomi Mi 5s review: Ever changing

24 October 2016
The Mi 5 went on sale in April and the market has change quite a bit since then. While Xiaomi is having a very successful year so far, especially with the mid-range Redmi series, the high-end competition can only be described as unprecedented. In the wake of the Galaxy Note7 demise, the iPhone 7 release, and the V20 stepping up its game the it's time, Xiaomi is shifting the spotlight back to the Mi flagships with its new Mi 5s and Mi 5s Plus updates.

I looked forward to read this review. I have few questions: 1) Is the speaker and headphones' audio quality improvable by firmware updates?
2) Does Xiaomi truly improve camera's performance with their updates?
3) If I will load Pixel ROM, will I see improvement with the camera (as they share the same sensor)?

The review comes too late for me, but I'm glad I made the right decision. The Mi5s does not feel like an upgrade for me. The only positive thing is the more durable build.

I'll stick with my glass cannon, aka Mi5. Why? OIS, better battery life, and most important, better sound quality. I mean, seriously, it's a frigging flagship and it has a noise floor of -84db?

Like, really? I had the Xperia M2 which had lower noise floor than Mi5s, and it was still distinctly present on quiet music passages, or when no music was running at all. That's the biggest fail in Mi5s for me, as I listen to music daily and for long periods of time.

Sure, many people just listen to dynamically compressed music that simply has no quiet passages, but that's not what I mostly listen to.

The camera on the Mi5s is better, especially in low light conditions, but the lack of OIS just kills it. Overall, it seems they sacrificed too much to get the metal build and still meet the price bracket. Had they kept all the nice stuff from the Mi5 and added the metal build, I wouldn't have minded paying a bit more for it. But like this? Nah. Glass cannon it is.

I love the Xiaomi Mi 5, best phone I have ever owned. I pay close attention to bulk, having tried several phone sizes up to the 6 inch Huawei Mate 7. The Mi 5 is the perfect size and weight for my smallish hands. From that point of view, the Mi 5S is a step backward - a bit wider, taller and heavier. Battery life is my other main criterion and again, the Mi 5 is better than the 5S. So, no upgrade here for me. Unfortunately, OEM's are hooked on adding bells and whistles that are often gimmicks that appeal to a minority but take away from solid basics so I am doubtful that the upcoming Mi 6 will meet my criteria and be superior to the Mi 5. Waiting to see.

And there is no Gorilla Glass 4 on the Mi 5s, it's not mentioned anywhere on the official sites. Even better, MIUI team member has confirmed there is no Gorilla Glass on the Mi 5s.

MIUI 8 is probably the reason why Mi 5s got a worse endurance rating than Mi 5, even though it has +200mAh larger battery. A lot of users are reporting battery issues on their Mi 5 after an upgrade: http://www.gsmarena.com/newscomm-20107.php
Should be fixed in future updates.
