LG G6 vs. Galaxy S8 vs. Xperia XZ Premium: Three's a company

20 May 2017
It's pick-a-flagship time and these are probably the three best phones of the season. The Samsung Galaxy S8 and the LG G6 are already available worldwide, while the Xperia XZ Premium is just about starting to hit the shelves - so it won't be all that painful a wait if the phone proves worthy.

Anonymous, 22 May 2017Haha Joke's on you. XZP has by far the worst camera of the bunch. That's clearly not true - actually look at the photographs - and I mean properly look at them: The S8 over exposes nearly every shot, blowing out highlights and over compensating with additional contrast. On a pixel level it's nice and clean but at the expense of detail - those shutters do not look like that! Look at the concrete spheres on the snail shot, they're easily the least detailed. Watch for a few of the road signs in a couple of shots and you'll see ultra-heavy sharpening, leading to halo effects. Same with roofs. It also has the most colour bleed.

It looks clean but the effect is ALL software and GSMA are entirely right when they say that it gives the S8 photos an un-natural plastic finish, which isn't helped by Sammy's insistence on overheating colours. The pictures are the least accurate and natural of the three by quite some margin.

The Xperia does less with processing and relies on superior hardware to do the heavy lifting - which is the better way forward. The Sony doesn't have to over-sharpen edges because it's picking up enough detail to tell the chip what the edges actually look like. It doesn't have to guess at what the shutter looks like: it can see what it looks like.

For every daylight shot the XZP won, the G6 came second and the S8 trailed behind. Nighttime handheld is a different story, yes: but there are ways around that on the Sony and, as GSMA point out, if you use them you'll get better results on the Xperia.

I'll take the trade off for superior, natural daylight shots, better image stabilisation in video and superior night images, if you put in a bit more effort.

Vaio Agent, 22 May 2017i Dont think so, u can refer this comparison SAMSUNG S8 vs ... moreAnd you can also refer to Dxo mark who are professional photographers who found HTC U11 to be better than all! There is not even much difference between S7 edge and S8/S8+, so I don't understand this hype about S8/S8+ camera. Dxo mark ranked Google pixel highest and it turned out to be true it had the best camera, so Dxo mark guys are not stupid to rank HTC U11 highest! Have you watched the fast focus of U11 man!! You will be amazed! Indeed this time round HTC has UP it's game. So the earlier you start accepting HTC U 11 will have the best camera the better!

Anonymous, 22 May 2017Night photography is night and day ... literally even when ... moreI'm not disagreeing but I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens. I agree that miniaturization of the sensors has taken its toll, also it would be nice if more makers re-introduced Xenon. Phones aren't that bad in low light though, except sometimes if the subject is moving. Heck, my phone sometimes sees better in the dark than I do, while my first camera phones couldn't take a proper photo in my bedroom with the light on, it was still too dark for them. And yes, information gets lost, but - most people post their photos scaled down on social networks, or, when they look at them they only look at them briefly on a display or a monitor and most monitors are still 1920x1080, I suppose. They aren't pixel-peeping. Very few people print their photos. You could say that quantity has taken over quality, but still people take more photos now than ever before.

There are shots that i could never do on a mobile camera (long exposure, flash, tele photo etc) but for 98% of my photos I'd much rather use my S8+ over my canon D40 ($2000+ at the time).

I know DSLR cameras aim for natural looking pics but most people find them too washed out and need to do processing anyway.

I took a photo of my baby daughter sleeping in a pretty dark room this morning. My DSLR wouldn't have done much better unless i had a tripod or used bounce flash.

MdN8, 22 May 2017Have an upvote. Seriously, I'm tired of the "just get a D... moreNight photography is night and day ... literally even when comparing the most basic mirrorless camera to a phone.

A very great difference exists in low light photography too (photographs under clouds or inside), which is maybe the greatest amount of photography for most people.

In the one thing that the two are comparable is day photography which I would say is about 1/3rd to 1/4th of all the photographs people would ever take.

Mirrorless are almost as small as point and shoot cameras and the way prices are going down it won't be a stretch to think the prices would be there too.

If anything I think phone photography has actually lost ground in the last few years. Just owning a good mirrorless camera would basically make you forget about your phone camera. It's still good during the day (with a bright sun out), but it's simply not the case often.

The amount of information lost through phone photography IMO is unacceptable. It's like we have willfully accepted a nebulous way to remember our lives. Also given the small size of the sensors and the inability to collect light properly I don't expect phones to get much better fast and that's an issue to many/most people.

In fact I envision a future where mirrorless would be very cheap and relatively small. Enough that no self-respecting family won't have one during their travels. The future of phone photography does not look to be that great IMO.

Seriously, I'm tired of the "just get a DSLR" argument. Phone cameras have been good enough for a while now, at least to replace the ordinary "point and shoot" cameras. If you know what you're doing, you will make good photos. If you're a bad photographer a 1500 Euro camera won't help you. Very few people need professional quality cameras and even some professionals carry expensive cameras to their assignments just to look like a professional. I have an old Canon somewhere too, and the only feature I sometimes miss is the zoom. A few other people I know do the same, they just use a phone and maybe take their "real" camera on special occasions. All the ones in this review are excellent, except for a slight drawback for the Sony which doesn't have OIS and needs a really steady hand.

There seems to be a lot of missing information regarding the XZP's display. You forgot to mention the Super Vivid mode that turns it into like an AMOLED or the X reality Pixel filler and the Triluminous sRGB138%. S8 is superoversaturated that is results in detail loss, look at screen comparison on YouTube.
Also the XZP has a louder speaker because it was caught live on Recombu Q&A
Benchmarks do not matter because XZs is faster than S8 with an 820.
For connectivity, you forgot PS4 remote play, and all other Sony features.
Lastly, the XZP has been consistently taking better pictures than everything else on other sites.

So the conclusion is.. the is no conclusion? Something fishy here..

OK so all the phones are very similar in specs though the G6 is obviously a little underpowered in comparison. And while I know looks are subjective, you can't deny poor design. So while I love the look of the Sony, it is MASSIVE compared to the other two, and regardless of which side of the bezels argument you align to, that is inescapable. I'd take an off centre finger print reader over a phone I can't fit in my pocket anyday.. the S8 wins clearly (just like it did in most categories in this review but GSM Arena don't want to call it).

So let me see If i get it?, in the test made a day earlier the S8 was the phone without the best results in every photo it captures and i don't say it the most people the voted says that and today the XZ and G6 made better pictures i don't get really i agree with the other people the S8 made the better photograps
