Nokia 8 review: Connecting the dots

25 August 2017
This is it then. The long-awaited Finnish flagship that goes all in against the phones that rule today. The Finnish cameraphone returning to claim the prize that was once its birthright. Everybody bow and make way?

s4f786, 26 Aug 2017I wouldn't put the battery life as one of the best, the s6 ... moreS6 had very bad sot. It got the score due to high stand by time. This one has much better sot. Gsma writes it themselves how the scores are given. Can't you guys see that

gab, 26 Aug 2017then the phone wouldn't be flagship grade. and come on, ... moreNo, the waste is 1440p on 5.3inch phone. The other one is that display one of the most expensive part of the phone, why should I pay for 1440p when I have no need for it, destroying my battery faster, causes lag in my games, makes phone more prone to overheating, not to mention at normal viewing distance I cant even tell the difference between 1440p and 1080p. However the disadvantages is quite clear.

I know android nerds all about numbers even if said numbers doesnt serve any good purpose for the product. 1440p is a joke on the smarthphone making user experience a hell.

Guess what the buttery smooth Pixel-Oneplus-Iphones all had 1080p resolution or even lower with iphone. 1440p is a gimmick and a scam aimed at nerds and casuals who all about "pretty" screen. How long before you ruin all the phone, whats next 4K on 5 inch phone? Or why not 8K? Because bigger is better, right?

Sadly, the overall impression is kind of meh... it's a good all-rounder phone, bt it doesn't excel in any particular aspect, none. The screen is alright, but there are better ones, the chipset is what every other flagship has inside, IP54 is clearly not on par with the rest of the pack... and ultimately, what we all expected to be THE real-deal - camera - is clearly behind SGS8, LG6 and P10... so it's not a bad phone, but there is nothing iconic about it.

Hopefully the Nokia 9 is not just a rumor, as this one is not the one to restore the old glory.

Lighting McQueen , 26 Aug 2017Excuse me, the Nokia 6 camera low light is the worst among ... moreThe Nokia 6 camera doesn't deserve "worst" as you've described. For example, consider the small print in both the UK and American notes in the low-light test. Shot at a higher ISO, the Nokia 6 still manages to resolve details that the 8 fumbles with.

The Nokia 8's camera is far cry from any of the other models that you've mentioned. For example, despite having the same pixel pitch as the G6, the Nokia 8 misses obvious details (see Lincoln's lapels and aforementioned small print in notes), whilst having an ISO advantage (ISO 600 vs. 750). Consider also the vast differences in corner sharpness in the G6 despite having a brighter F/1.8 lens (wider apertures typically lead to difficulty in maintaining high corner sharpness). It is embarrassing that a Zeiss-branded lens would lose out to an unknown manufacturer in the G6. The other phones you've quoted (S7, S8, V20 and R11) are largely better than G6, so much less needs to be mentioned about them.

I stand by my original points. I am by large a Nokia-fan of old, and would desperately like to be proven wrong. If you can show camera samples from the GSMArena camera comparison charts or real-life scenes that prove otherwise, please do share them with us.

Lastly, consider how Nokia has always been one to honestly advertise image quality of their releases if they had been designed with camera image quality in mind. Remember the phone announcements of the past that had various tests to demonstrate so? Such a message in the Nokia 8 release is completely absent. Rather, it was centrally about the 'bothie' software gimmick and OZO audio. The silence when it came to image quality was deafening. All in, this ties in very nicely with the test photos available to all in the GSMArena photo comparison charts.

If this is the "8", I could contemplate the "9"...but, of the eventual/possible "10", I might be afraid of. ;)

and come on, snapdragon 835? it would be wasted on a 1080p screen, especially with what you're paying

Seen how degraded all previous Nokia business and see now the same hype around this dead brand. So can assume - all trolls who denied all criticism about Nokia are just Nokia employees. And nothing changed now. The same trolls who talking about persons, not facts. History don't teach these people. It's sad, but this brand is worth just to disappear.

AnonD-145316, 26 Aug 2017Have you even checked the review of this beast battery endu... moreI wouldn't put the battery life as one of the best, the s6 had 73 hours eating and that's a 2 year old device with 2500mah battery so that's 300mah less, and take into account touchwiz, the Nokia 8 has a better and more efficiently made cpu too than the s6 so your claim of the Nokia 8 being a beast is t exactly accurate
