Apple iPhone 8 Plus review

30 September 2017
In another place and another time, the Apple iPhone 8 Plus would have been one of the hottest things around. Swathed in hype, causing a stir, bringing the free ride of the competition's flagships to an abrupt and painful halt.

Sort by:

It's 2017 and were still recording in mono audio lol. For a device platform which has always been aimed at the high end of stuff, you'd think they can manage stereo audio.

    Why I don't & won't have an iPhone.

    1. Poor interconnectivity - If I want to transfer an image/file from Android to Android I can easily via Bluetooth, if I want to transfer Android to iPhone, I have to email it, which isn't helpful if you haven't got a signal.

    2. Expandable Memory - I want to be able to hold my stuff on a memory card, separately from the phone, if the phone gets broken they're gone, with stuff on a memory card, there's a chance that they may well survive it. No memory slot, not interested thanks.

    3. Rigidity/Control - I find that Apple's grip on things too much & overpowering, whilst there are benefits to this, for me it's overwhelming and I don't like it. Android is a little bit more relaxed in this.

What I find quite interesting is our company has just dumped iPhones & Apple and is moving to Android based phones because they're easier to deal with and cheaper.

I8 android compatitor is 1+5,and its costs way less. Cant even make fast charger and include in the box, basically phone for reviewers and "not smart" people(most of the iphone fans)

It really is very heavy, with a case as heavy as the industrial Cat S60 (which doesn't need one). The X will be much lighter. So is the Android competition. A bit more real-world speed versus lugging a brick which is expensive, large, heavy and lacks features?

I have to agree that the iPhone 8 samples seem to have a lot of bad artifacts at 100%. Reminds me a bit of Oneplus 5.

Note 8, 30 Sep 2017Getting reports that iPhone 8 Plus gets 10/10 in repairabil... moreNot really the same. The Note7 exploded whereas the iPhone's screen is just separating.
We'll just have to see if it is just one batch that has the manufacturing defect or a widespread problem.

Last I saw though it was only two units.

Iskander, 30 Sep 2017That all depends on the video watched. Dark video's will he... moreIn a large population of anything, there will a certain number of failures, especially in something like batteries which contain corrosive or highly volatile components. This is unfortunately to be expected, especially in the lot numbers of something as popular as the iPhone.

                The real questions are:

                1. Did the containment vessel do its job and properly contain the failure?
                2. Did the failures cause any collateral damage?
                3. Statistically. is the number of failures excessive in a (say) failed units/100,000 metric.

there's something strange about this review , as if I was reading an iphone review on The Verge in past years ( they actually changed now for better after so many criticizing )

abdul, 30 Sep 2017Hey GSMarena, are you blind? Those iPhone 8 camera samples ... moreWhen they said that the iPhone 8 resolved more details than the Galaxy S8, I was not impressed. The S8 clearly has more details and better image, especially corner softness (horrible on iPhone 8, excellent on S8).
Did you see how terrible that noise reduction algorithm is on the iPhone 8? iPhone 7, 6, etc, were already BAD but this is even worse. Look at the cars, they're not even cars anymore lol, full of artifacts.

Tann Hauser, 30 Sep 2017The real question is... Can that bokeh be turned off? Or is... moreIt's a good question. Of course it's an effect but phones today have wider aperture which means shallow depth of field even without the effect. But I don't know how shallow. When pro photographers want bokeh they change the lens which you can't do on a phone.

iPhones have many drawbacks, which Apple will probably never rectify. But the iPhone 8 Plus does have some good things too.

Good battery life. Well-built body. Snapdragon better work hard on their SD 845, because at this rate even catching up (forget bypassing) the A11 is going to be a really hard task. Excellent Stereo Speakers. Great set of cameras.

Hey GSMarena, are you blind? Those iPhone 8 camera samples are horrible! Overprocessed & oversharpened to the point of detail loss. They resemble an oil painting - look at the trees, grass, leaves! The optics are shit too - lots of lens softness all around. Color is OK but Pixel's color rendering is wayyy better - especially in low light scene.
Guys, have you changed the reviewers? I always enjoyed reading the camera section of your reviews but this is getting ridiculous!

It may be fast and have excellent cameras, however it has a huge footprint with enormous bezels and it is heavy as a brick.
Symply cannot be a MOBILE device to choose.

Personally I find the Sony night photos the most pleasing to look at, but still refusing to stick with such low quality mono audio on the video camera is just plain arrogance. I would love to find out what apples real excuse is for not implementing such a basic function.
