Huawei Mate 10 review

28 October 2017
The fall may as well be the season of phablets. Apple, LG and Samsung are the usual suspects but Huawei wants in too – as a front-runner, mind you, not an also-ran. Like its illustrious rivals, Huawei is also yielding to the pressure and the new Mate 10 is trying hard to please the fickle crowd.

"The S8+ is about €100 cheaper than the Mate 10 but you'll lose the dual-camera setup, while the Note8 will give you that and an S-Pen for an extra €150."

Actual prices:
S8+ 4gb/64gb - 692$
Note8 6gb/64gb - 905$
Mate10 4gb/64gb - 610$

"That's the thing - the Mate 9 and 9 Pro would do just that, for a fraction of the price."

Not entirely true. Only Mate 9 had a recent significant reduction in price because of release of Mate 10. Prices (non European for better accuracy) are as follows

    Mate 9 4gb/64gb - 450$
Mate 9 pro 6/128gb (only version in international market) - 635$
P10 plus 6/128gb (only version in international market) - 580$
    Mate 10 4/64gb - 610$

LG superfan, 28 Oct 2017Battery test is done at default resolution which is QHD so ... moreS8, S8+ and Mate 10 all have default resolution set at FHD.

Some people will never understand context of optimized GPU and CPU to go with an OLED display.

I guess the "AI" is not tangible yet because there are not enough AI like features in use. Huawei has tried several AI features in their Honor magic since last year and some of them have made it to the Chinese rom for Mate 10. Others still need refinement as well partnership with various groups in international arena to make the AI features possible.

TheProperGentleman, 28 Oct 2017I do have to disagree with your opinion. As ugly as EMUI ma... moreThey call it ugly because of the icons despite the fact that the Huawei theme app will get you access to thousands of themes with different icons and there are third party theme apps for Huawei as well and so getting a pure android oreo icons or any other icons you like is a matter of switching themes.

EMUI has one of the best UIs

As ugly as EMUI may look, but it's the smoothest UI experience I've ever seen on an Android device. I just installed a stock theme on my phone and downloaded Nova Launcher. 80% of my phone looks like a pixel now. I think that you can do the same in MIUI, minus the speed.

AnonD-392500, 28 Oct 2017My S8+ get 10+hours of SOT. P10+ has weak battery hahaInteresting. I used the S8+ as my daily driver for two weeks before I bought the P10 Plus. The most I could get with my type of usage is 5 hours of SOT. Can you tell me about your usage? It would also be wonderful if you can give me a screen shot on the battery usage and the SOT.

I had both. And I prefer EMUI over MIUI

A user with S8+, LGV30 and Mate 10 using at the same time can only tell if these battery tests reflect real time usage.

Like the S8 & S8+, the Mate 10 battery tests as well don't mention if the tests were taken at QHD or FHD resolution.

I don't really care about the battery test. As a P10 Plus owner, I always get 6+ hours of SOT despite the weak score in the battery test. The phone gets me to the end of the day with about 25% left. My usage includes navigating, listening to music, a lot of gaming, YouTube, and of course, a lot of video and photo taking. My friend has a mate 9 and he told he gets 8+ hours of SOT. His usage is pretty much the same as mine.

So yeah, don't put all your trust in the battery score, I'm pretty sure that you can get through full two days of battery out of the mate 10 with light to moderate usage. And a 1.5 days with moderate to heavy usage.

Hey guys, how do you change the 1440p resolution to 1080p? Do you cut off the pixels you don't want, or do you turn them off, or ... ? I mean, if you have 1440 pixels on the longer side, how do you make them to be just 1080?

Disappointed by battery life which is worse than Mate 9 in web surf and video playback. But great job on bezel cropping and photo quality. Too bad it's not available in France.
