27 December 2017
As 2017 draws to a close, we take a look back at the phones, which impressed us, and the ones which disappointed us. This end-of-year edition of our Editors Talk series will give you a glimpse at the love-and-hate relationship we have with smartphones and their design and features.

I dislike the tall skinny phones with the trending aspect ratio, finger print and facial recognition, as you have just sold your identity for nothing to the highest bidder.
Security is an issue. Machine learning is an issue, reporting your every movement and habits is an isue

TBH, I would say that all the flagships of 2017 were actually quite disappointing as every one of them had disadvantages that shouldn't have been there in the first place. In my opinion, I think that all flagships could have been way better this year. Basically all the phones that were released were literally "undercooked" or still in "beta version". And the sadness is that brands are asking us to pay such a big sum. I would like pay the 900$ only if a phone is worth it. I cannot see that all the 800$+ phones are actually worth it. They may be, but not in the way that they are released. I cannot understand the bezel-less craze and why brands are abandoning the headphone jack. I am ok with the dual camera but I would prefer to have a powerful traditional "single" camera. TBH, I am not too optimistic about 2018 if I base facts of what we have seen this year. Yes things like bezel-less phones will remain but I would like to see new features that are practical. I don't want to see (but we will all see anyways) new features that are actually gimmicks and totally unnecessary. My wish is that manufacturers could start actually crafting their phones with more attention and releasing them more complete as a model. Then we could probably see their value for the price. If one wants my opinion on the best phone of the year, I would say none really appealed to me.

X is indeed the worst phone of the year, absolutely nothing special except the price, only the back glass costs you $550, with this you can get oneplus 5T which is better than the entire X.

They come with even more issues. You should have used the Xperia M4 Aqua. And when I said what sh*t this phone is, everybody said „you can‘t compare it to high end“. Sad thing is that almost every mid range and cheap phone has such low quality

Best phones of 2017? - Xiaomi A1 because of the price, and Xiaomi Mi6 because of the price/everything else.
Worst phones?Hard to say, almost all the phones that cost more than 500$,each and every one of them comes with issues...mostly hardware,so you cannot fix them by yourself..
2018?Surely we are all hoping for a 1500$,even two grand phone that will come with 7" screen with 21:9 aspect ratio,at least,"new" Qualcomm`s chipset that will be 1,07% faster than the old one, more RAM that will bring you no benefit whatsoever, new gen.of OLED screens with a dozen issues,2000-2500 mAh max. batteries, ultra fast charging that won`t come in the box,but separately for about 100$,new plastic back designs that will be cheaper to make but more profit for brands, new 6-pack cameras with no practical/ intelligent purpose at all, and finally 3,5mm jack...what`s that??I remember my Sony walkman from the Dark Age,it had one of those...

I am an android developer and seeing it die because of people blindly praising it without challenging its developers hurts me (and my job). Stop being so uncritical, android SoC are 2-3 generation behind apple's, the screens are far less accurate, active biometrics, thicker bezels.

Androids used to be the innovators. What happenes? Too much praise blonded us?

The increased YouTube popularity? Thank Angie as she's simply perfect & makes reviews more enjoyable. She has a unique interesting personality.

Though, sometimes they say good things about Sony but overall the don't respect it enough. Why? Because, when it comes to the other phones, the over react and make those phones the best ones regardless of their issues.

Baudolino , 28 Dec 2017I liked your comment about picking a phone. You are describ... moreHi Baudolino, I have over the years used Sony Xperia, shifted to Nokia (symbian), came back to android, used Samsumg S3 (very good phone for its time), used the S5 (again a very good phone for its time). I briefly used the LeEco Le Max 2 but hated the UI as well the limitation on the storage (only 32 GB built in, no expansion slot available). The on board software managing the IR emitter was also very spotty.
My next phone was the Lenovo Vibe X3, which was okay in all respects (it had great stereo speakers) but the processor left a bit to be desired.

I am currently using the Honor 8 Pro and am loving it. It is the best phone I have used till now. My only complaint it is the audio quality of this phone. Dust/Water protection would have been a bonus. The onboard software managing the IR Emitter is wonderful. I have yet to come across a device it cannot detect and configure.

Which has been your favorite phone ?

But where I live, I get 4G+ signals on my G6 even when the S8 doesn't even pick up enough signals for 3G to work properly. And the S8 is not a defective unit. Also the S8 is not even a little bit faster than the LG G6 in day to day use, inspite of the newer SoC. If you don't know what 4G+ is, it's an incremental update to 4G and is found in certain areas.

As my Samsung Galaxy Alpha starts to give up on me, I'm hoping for another premium build 4.7 inch phone that's not got an Apple logo on the back. I might be the minority but I don't care for large screens or 1000$ price tags. Fingers crossed

Phone's built-in speakers are for notifications, ringtones and all that stuff that doesn't matter it is comes out from the tiny speaker(s) the phone happens to have.
