Huawei P20 Pro vs. Samsung Galaxy S9+

27 April 2018
1x, 2x... 5x. Zooming smartphone cameras are no longer a novelty - in fact a numbers race is forming. Asus' Zenfone Zoom couldn't make waves, but Huawei appears on the right track to do so with the P20 Pro and its 3x zoom camera. We figured we'd pit it against the Galaxy S9+ - the latest phone to come out with what's become the standard 2x zoom.

      Dear GSMArena team,
the report didn't include any comparison for battery life or highlight the pressure censor available only in S9. Wondering if Huawei is offering any similar features...
We would appreciate to reconsider all this.
      Thanks

                  Stills- Huawei
                  Videos- Samsung

Adapter for headphones, or wireless headphones.
128GB, plenty of storage, unless you're hoarding a lot of stuff, jesus vs expandable.

Wireless charging, can't really use the phone when charging wireless.

Huawei doesn't need a "DEX" to be PC mode.

Cheaper by 150 AUD - Huawei.

                  Samsung better sound,
Huawei Max volume vs 80% Samsung volume.

Hey. Has anyone rocking with the regular P20 instead of Pro? Understand that the the Pro version has a bigger sensor, but it seems to me the P20 Pro 10mp photos are not that good when comes to details. Since both the P20 and P20 Pro support Night mode, I wonder how's the low light photo quality is like for the P20 model? It is cheaper than Pro, and higher MP camera with lower price tag. Thinking of getting the P20 instead of Pro if the photo quality differences are not significant.

I have access to both these phones. (I have one, my partner the other) and I largely agree with your conclusions here. The front facing camera in particular is pretty poor on the P20.
There are a few corrections to make to the article though:

-Front facing video on p20 pro is up to 1080, must disable beauty mode first. ( not 720 as you list)

                                      - the optical stabilisation on the p20 tele lens is always active, including on 4k video. The phone only switches to the tele lens when focusing on a distant object, in suitable light, and 3x and above zoom. Meet the above criteria and you will have optically stabilised video. Not ideal, sure, but useful non-the-less.

-Stabilised video on the S9+ does not suffer significant loss in detail compared to un-stabilised, p20 does.

-There is absolutely no way the 3x zoom video is better on the S9+, unless the p20 was zooming digitally for some reason. I've tested both extensively and this is simply not true. 2x with stabilisation would be a win for the S9 for sure, zoom beyond that and it's p20, even more so with stabilisation off.

That said, I agree with your conclusion: S9+ for selfies and videos, while both are exceptional for photos. Slight win for the p20p due to additional reach, and option to take 40mp images when appropriate.
As an overall package, S9+ is the best all-rounder.

In a lot of reviews, the P20 was praised in heaven but in my opinion it wasn't that good. Yes it's a good camera but for my eyes to unrealistic. Sharpening, saturation and contrast was over the the top and no one mentioned the bad video quality and lack of stabilisation even at 1080p 60fps.

I always believed in GSMARENA and now it's showing the truth about the P20 Pro.

Only advantage I see is Night mode feature for low light or to enhance HDR photography which can be handy sometimes but not always.

In summary, it's a good phone with good camera but not the best like fake DxOmark will believe us.
