Huawei P20 Pro vs. Samsung Galaxy S9+

27 April 2018
1x, 2x... 5x. Zooming smartphone cameras are no longer a novelty - in fact a numbers race is forming. Asus' Zenfone Zoom couldn't make waves, but Huawei appears on the right track to do so with the P20 Pro and its 3x zoom camera. We figured we'd pit it against the Galaxy S9+ - the latest phone to come out with what's become the standard 2x zoom.

P20 Pro JPGs makes S9+ processing looks absolutely natural. S9+ is the only flagship with acceptable image quality this year so far. Don't expect much from P20 Pro RAW- bad DR (dark), CA and fail to resolve more detail than much older 38Mpx Nokia 808 JPG. It may looks good but only after hours of LR editing.

AnonD-755352, 28 Apr 2018Without AI at 10MP, of course. And don't even bring up XZ2 ... moreActually those mentioned can be considered already behind, with xzp, pixel3 and u12 coming soon...
P20pro could do also better with update, see b&w shot(example building with patterns), but in color version its deformed. Raw is also better than jpeg one, hopefully they update camera sw for that and also for videos, vs. reshoot would be interesting then.

AnonD-755352, 28 Apr 2018One more thing to say, I don't know what you mean by washed... moreRight, saw that though somewhere, probably some regions without new update I found out...

Very nice comparison, thanks for your efforts. I’ll take the S9 Plus. .

i'd just like to say "wow" to Huawei for making such an impressive phone. but it just that! I like to have that thing but not from them for this time... I would like to choose not just how great can they offer all alone... but their brand reputation as well. I still don't trust these Chinese OEM, no hate but, for security and other reason, there is no way I will choose them. I still prefers Samsung and Apple as they are much popular here in our country, their resale value is high still even after a long period of time, their brand reputation here were high and among other things. Huawei along with these other Chinese OEM's should begin building their company reputation first and start advertising well rather than just making a nice thing that sooner or later, its value will start to fade very fast...

They got so much right and so much wrong with this phone by cutting corners.

                1) No SD card slot (people still desire this option
                2) The Notch - Wasted screen real estate that can only do two things (emulate Apple, and show notifications)
                3) No headphone jack - No matter what you say about wireless technology you cannot deliver a solid connection like you can with a wired one. The sound quality is better too.

S9+, an all rounder. Impressive and consistent shots in any light and in any mode.
Huawei P20 pro: very competitive hardware and camera setup. But huawei needs some polishing in its processing though, overly saturated photos in ai mode, nonetheless very detailed output in daylight. Large sensor for lowlight BUT ironically with much less details due to Very Agressive noise reduction - but still the painterly look of photos is still good for social media sharing. Nice try for huawei. But accept it or not, S9+ Takes the Trophy. It's proven in this review, in other reviews and already proved it Myself.

i personally think pixel phones are the most consistent camera phone on the market.

there was only one smartphone that can capture natural images. this two smartphones wasn't done that. their captures are for instagram/flickr posting. both of them makes your pictures retouch even when they are using pro mode/manual mode. i have this both phone in me to test only not to be my phone but its just for my testing purposes and i found out that nah im not a fan of of using instagram or flickr this phones in not intended to capture memories with real images not changing the image but this images captures fun images like for teenagers images.

And don't even bring up XZ2 here, that one's dynamic range is simply not on par with S9, P20 Pro and other phones you listed especially under low-light condition and noise level is too high to be discussed here. Its corner-to-corner sharpness is quite low as well as details at night. Pixel 2's dynamic range must be on par with P20 Pro though, and U11+ also should have an excellent camera, so I'm actually very curious to see how they are going to fare against those camera kings.

Both phones have their respective upsides and downsides but so many people in this comment section think one phone is perfect and other is a complete crap! Why can't we just instead admit that we all have different needs and preferences?

All those are far from natural. Of course its just sw thing, but wonder if it will change if it was intended, also you can use it without AI, in 10mp and without night mode, but if you compare those to U11+/pixel2/xz2 they look blurry with washed out colors. In dark and zooming its better, but thats all, sure its better if its what you intend to use it most for.

Pretty neck & neck in the rear camera image department. I'd prefer the S9+ for it's less fussier approach though. But a great camera from the P20 Pro, nonetheless.
