Nokia 8 Sirocco review

04 June 2018
Sirocco is no wind of change and rushing things is not really the Mediterranean way. It makes perfect sense then that the Nokia 8 Sirocco comes out with last year's chipset and what's now considered an old-school 16:9 aspect display. That's everything old about it though - well, that and, obviously, the name lifted off of one of the special editions Nokia 8800s from the mid-noughties.

Phone is extra ordinary with well shape but it is single sim and price is abnormal. If it launches dual sim and price around 25000/-.It will be the single highest sale phone in india

Just an add-on to my opinion on the screen. It is super sharp. Tint change is present and may bother some users. However, the REAL failure of this screen is colour saturation. Reds and greens are waaaaaay oversaturated (supposedly to compensate for bluish tint when viewed at an angle), and there is no means of adjusting that. I hope they will provide a software solution for that eventually.

I find it ridiculous that reviewers all speak of edge discoloration and tint change when viewed from an angle in this phone as a deal breaker and a huge fault, while nobody even mentions this effect in S8, where it is also present (maybe slightly less pronounced because the edges are slightly shorter). No no, they even praise that display as best in class. Go figure.

Could have been so much better this phone.....yet fails to deliver a true flagship experience. It´s fine if you´re after a different and unique product and you don´t care about bezeless (18:9) phones i get that, still....

When prices falls (which eventually it will) it will be worth to take a look. Still capable SD835, Android one and high end quality materials. For 450€ it would have make much more sense.... For now,Oneplus 6, Xiaomi mi8 are way better than this and probably cheaper.

Carol, 09 Jun 2018I do not make my opinions around interest of the mass. So, ... moreHello neighbour! Nice to hear that you're Romanian. I don't give a $hit for brand popularity. I don't own Samsung or iPhone. But they make great things. I do not underestimate them in any way. My daughter used S6 till last month when I bought to her P20 Pro. She decided, instead of iPhone X. For her best option is the camera.
Anyway - my phone is SONY XZ Premium. Sony isn't so popular in these days.
I like the design of XZP. That's why I bought it.
But if I must choose between Sirocco and S8, will buy definitely S8. Better design - I don't like curved screens, but are! Better camera without a hump. Same CPU.
I still keep almost every Nokia that I own in the past. Keeping, and still working PureView 808, Nokia 1020, Nokia 930. So, I'm old die hard NOKIA fan, but still - latest Nokia's are good, but not great as before.
When they reach the level of old Nokia phones - at least in camera department - I'll consider to buy one.
Not all eastern Europeans are blinded by the brand. And it is not just in our region. Look in China, Japan, Australia, UK, USA - they are crazy brand fans. So keep your chin high. We are not low level or quality people.
                          Cheers.

So, i really do not care about what people like to buy. They will buy a pile of sh''t if the package would be branded with a "trendy" brand Name. Especially east europeans (Taking other continents out of discussion). I got to know this. I am romanian. Anyhow, the point was: uh, i complain about the curved screen but i recomand to all to buy s8. A device with a curved screen. Realize the hypocrisy in these words? As for this device. It might not be the top of the line. But snapdragon 835 is a great chip. Actually a superchip and i do not see any reason as of why would OEM's not willing to use this chip? Just cause is a trend on buying the next greatest bla bla? Sorry, benchmarks do not worm me. Using the device it self does. And samsung lags after a while no matter what chip it has. In fact, samsung s8 has nothing on my nokia 8. Which is, at this point, the best flagship device ever existed. Great battery life, great build quality, timely updates and great microphones + good camera for not more then 350 €. People have to be blind to buy samesung or iphones. But wait, Nokia is not trendy....

I wouldn't say Sirocco is released one year too late. It is pretty much priced identically as the S8, but the S8 will only have another year or so of system support and updates, while the Sirocco at least 3 (and more frequent). So it is there-there, depends on which compromise one prefers.

As far as the screen size is concerned, I prefer wider and longer, because a) I find longer less balanced for one handed use, balancing out these few milimeters of extra width and b) because wider means more friendly for reading text when used horizontally. But again, that is just my personal view.

That means that is more uncomfortable to use/operate. Also the S8 have bigger display and it is AMOLED, not pOLED. And the camera on the S8 is much better.
For Samsung software - you say it is slow. I don't think so, cause my daughter used Galaxy S6 since release till May this year, when i bought to her Huawei P20 Pro. She never complain about the UI, for lagging, slowing etc.
The end point for me is: Releasing Sirocco is one year late.

Chosing between S8 and the Sirocco (the chipset argument gone, the Samsung UI slowing it down, camera not being such a big difference considering the test photos here in GSMArena) I would chose the Sirocco anytime just for its compactness.
