Xiaomi Redmi S2 (Y2) review

22 June 2018
Every new Redmi has a seemingly impossible task - be a better bang for your buck than the previous one. And cheaper, or worst-case scenario - same price. If it were any other maker, it would have been a hard no can do. But not Xiaomi. It keeps doing it against the odds and here is the Redmi S2 to prove it.

Lee, 29 Jun 2018Vivo y85 can vs this model. No buddy
This mobile is targeted in Indian(where Xiaomi is No1) and Chinese audiences. They Vivo V85 coasts around 16000 Rs which is 160% of The This phone. So both belong to complete different categories

i took a chance and ordered the S2 a day after release. I have never been so impressed with a cell phone in my life. it's great. Cameras work wonderfully, even in low light and the device is lightening fast. Battery life impressive too.

All the budget phones, non smartphones still have those, just a few flaships implementing it wont have much of effect.
Also implementation of usb c has its own hurdles. That old connector still covers a wide range of devices apart from chargers. And all need to be modified or you need to carry adapters.

And adjusting to new type c is another big leap. It will take some time to adjust, unless it becomes a regular item everywhere.

However, I would not trust a 2016 chip to get drivers beyond Android P. It is clear that Xiaomi is clearing a large stock of 625 chips, which brings the price down. I don't see a reason to pat them on the back for that - for them it is just cheaper than getting newer low-spec chips. It is a nice device, but the review should mention its shortcomings despite the price. I mean, no cons just because it is a 200$ device, while flagships get trashed for reasons like "Stock android is barebones" ? Who writes reviews like that? Anyway, at least we have a timely review.

rowny, 23 Jun 2018Guys...the phone is a great value, but you mislead readers ... moreThey did mention that the resolution is stretched for 720 p screen on their YouTube video review and about the chipset it's still good at every tasks or even gaming at medium settings when well known brands like Samsung and Huawei are using even weaker chipsets on their 2018 mid-range phones lineup and don't forget that this is a budget phone so for the price xiaomi did a great job and it's a real value for money.

In my opinion, Xiaomi intendedly give the Redmi S2/Y2 a hefty price tag for the specs, probably because they want consumers to reach for the RN5 (RN5 Pro in India) with INR1,000 or 2,000 extra. When they done with that trick, they will reduce the S2/Y2's asking price eventually, even if it's practically useless given the harsh and aggresive market will surely overbrought the S2 for less cash. So if the Redmi Y2 is not your cup of tea, better stand away from it.

Where Xiaomi offically sell in Europe, you can get this one 170€ when the redmi note 5 (S636, 4Ah battery, dual camera, 1080p) for less than 30€ more. No deal.

Guys...the phone is a great value, but you mislead readers by posting cons as "Hardly any". You're coming out as Xiaomi fanboys every time you review one of their phones. Be more objective, and please mention that 720p for a 6" is just abysmal even for a cheap phone, that the camera is still blurry at low light, and that they're using a 2-year old chipset (updates anyone?). This is your job. People are reading this to know how to spend their hard-earned money, don't give them false expectations just because you fancy Xiaomi personally.
