LG G7 ThinQ review

03 July 2018
LG is finally releasing a G-series phone with the latest Snapdragon - yay! Regardless whether we have some supply chain optimization or LG's product planning to thank, the fact of the matter is the G7 ThinQ is now available internationally and it's a proper high-end device.

However, the display quality is great and best lcd i have seen so far. But what about the other things that stand out against the flow, like audio jack, great audio quality with quad dac, boombox implementation ( trust me you hear it), an ui that even if bad compared to stock android still moves as if it is not there (flow and snappiness) and sticking to what nearly all have named best camera combination on the market (2d super wide)? You don't like the notch..hide it.

I had a G6. Great phone. Best 2nd camera option - the super wide angle makes for some photos that with the exception of dslr/mirrorless cameras you simply cannot get on other phones regardless of brand/model. It died after one year and was changed under warranty. It simply did not charge anymore. Besides the mediocre battery life, it was a joy to use and i took it swimming in pools, the Mediterranean, the Caribbean and had no issues whatsoever.
I had a v30 for about 2 weeks (while the g6 was in service) and it too is a beast of a phone..snappy, gorgeous screen, plus everything the g6 was.
Since 1 week ago i am the proud owner of a g7 in blue. Battery life is not bad, certainly better than the g6, but the screen is goregeous as well even if not an oled. To use it in sunlight and have no issues..is great if you like going outdoors. In any case it is a great great phone and looking at the review i feel it's not made justice. Everyone tests the cameras in auto. Well..in auto, the focus speed is above a s9 or p20 (i tested both before getting the g7), the dynamic range is good enough and the details are more than you can find on other flagships. The only pain..oversharpening. Super bright mode is great, but even without it you have really good noise levels and details. Turn to manual though..it's an entire different story - check flickr for some user images and see for yourselves. I am a photography fan and also have a mirrorless and some glass for it - no phone will ever come near that quality, but the versatility of the second camera makes this a first on a list against any other phone except perhaps the v30.

Camera quality: Keep in mind - it wasn't mentioned in the review - but G7 should be able to shoot raw. Quality should be consistently better + and more options to tune the final images if you know what you are doing. At least I've only shot RAW in all phones who supported it so it's not taking away anything if you care about max quality.

LG seems to be doing a lot more right but they just seem to not be a serious competition. LG is a korean brand and almost all korean brands are so much in demand right now, unlike LG mobile. They need something to hype up their products.

Let´s face it, this phones just sits in the middle of the road, like GSm Arena mentioned....It´s not the most affordable value for money offer, neither has the ultimate hardware experience of others....

Once upon a time, LG made things different from the others even if that meant no selling much ( the sturdy design of the V series, the modular design of the G5,). Ok, some may say it was pointless because they didn´t managed to sell much, but they at least they were praised to be different.

now they just compete with the others in the same way, at least now they take longer but they release a proper chipset....Still, why do they release new phones with IPS screens, when you know that they are along with Samsung the n1 manufacturers of OLED screens?

And LG had many issues in the past, the long delay on updates, bootloop issues.

LG is becoming the new HTC....They lost the wow factor on the market, that no one cares...And in one year the phone will loose half of it´s value. Samsung is the only non chinese brand that is able to compete with the Chinese makers, because they still have the better R&D and technology available.

They should have also pointed out that when comparing to its competitors only it and the S9/S9+ have FM radio, and only the LG is Project Fi capable.

It's not a flagship if you're constantly having to monitor your battery usage. When will manufacturer learn?

Maybe next year I'll be tempted, this is mediocre.

Audio quality part is not complete.
LG uses Quad DAC which is the best on the market in terms of the quality and power proved many times in v30 tests.
Depending on the impedance of the headphones it switches from "low gain" to "high gain" to successfully cover 50 or even 100 Ohm headphones. This is why with your hp sample the loudness looked like it had no room for further extension. LG was most probably in the low gain mode

Also, in the verdict part you mention S9 as the best slow mo shooter. Why? XZ2 is.

I thought that LG was no longer relevant, I surprise that they still making phones even though that almost no one interested with them...:)

For those who want their phone to be dependable, 3000mah represents a red flag. If you have to worry about how you use your phone to avoid finding yourself without battery, something is wrong. I had that stress in my time with the samsung s6.
If a phone is sold as flagship, feature packed with fonctionalities for which the intent is to use, individually or together, heavily, bad battery life is contradictory. It doesn't work. Manufacturers have to stop with that, or adjust the slogan: "Great features and blazing performance, but to use sparingly because of crap battery. Get yours now."
