LG G7 ThinQ review

03 July 2018
LG is finally releasing a G-series phone with the latest Snapdragon - yay! Regardless whether we have some supply chain optimization or LG's product planning to thank, the fact of the matter is the G7 ThinQ is now available internationally and it's a proper high-end device.

    Dear GSMA,

    Thanks for the thorough review.

On p.6 'Alternatives, pros and cons, verdict', you say, 'And with a price of €650, it's not as expensive as its rivals were at launch.
Today, however, the Galaxy S9+ already costs as much as the LG G7'.

Please could you tell us or supply a link where we could find a trustworthy seller in Europe where I could get the S9+ @ ~ €650.
Maybe it's ebay, but I just dont know who I could trust.
    It's £799 in the U.K. & that's after a recent price drop.
    Many thanks.

    Re: LG G7 ThinQ:
LG is capable of producing the best smartphone & I hope that they do excelling in all areas not just some.

The rest of the competition should learn from the LG G7's beautiful high quality build & maybe until Gorilla Glass 5.0 drop & scratch resistance improves consider sapphire glass for our screens.

on paper i'ts great. It has everything. Even audio jack, fm radio and microsd slot. Useful features other companies are stupidly ditching. Battery is enough for every wise guy which doesn't play all day, each holy minute with its phone

Nick Tagataka, 04 Jul 2018Not really... The thing is Super Bright Mode on G7 works in... moreI agree with You, that dynamic range is better in Huawei's photo, but detail level is equally bad. I'm not seeing greater resolution in Huawei's photo and I'm not sure if it can be enhanced in that mode. I mean, sure, you can put both phones on a tripod and it will be a different story, but I'm talking about LG G7 Super Bright vs. Huawei P20 Pro Night modes here.

LG Superfan, 04 Jul 2018Yes and it keeps getting less wider every yearBecause distortion was pretty strong on G5. Less wide was the way to decrease distortion a bit

Geric.770, 04 Jul 2018The wide angle camera also doesn't have OIS until now even ... moreYes and it keeps getting less wider every year

Anonymous, 04 Jul 2018And their main feature the wide angle camera less wide...Yeah it gets less wide every year

Anonymous, 04 Jul 2018you forgot bootloopLol samsung and apple also bootloop aka stuck logo

This could be the best device on the market and I would still go for a notchless phone like mi mix 2s or vivo or samsung or razer phone etc. I'm a 50/50 person. Im 50% in for the hardware, which is the same old guff usually, and 50% in for design. And this notchdesign is totally ruining the goold old slab of glass design. See the n900 is still one of my fav designs for a phone out there. No buttons, no bells, no whistles, everything hidden. I love the find x for tributing this design and, would go for it if it wasnt 1000€+. These notches dont make people buy this phone anyway, they mostly buy brands, not phones...stop this trend already.

yuromonomoto, 04 Jul 2018poor rewiev ..in other rewiev lg g7 speaker is over 110db l... more"Naturally, we've put the speaker through our loudspeaker test and we measured some quite high numbers. And mind you, we've excluded the occasional peaks which went beyond 90db", the word "beyond" already gave u a hint that it have a possibility of reaching 110dB, besides different smartphone reviewers have different source for testing, so results may differ. The display is just 80nits from their advertised 1000nits, so why complain that it is a poor review? U wouldn't even give a shit to that in real life because what u are getting is the brightest IPS LCD display, or should I say the brightest display in a smartphone, hmm?

Anonymous, 04 Jul 2018Speaker is mono, cant be great. Just loudpoor rewiev ..in other rewiev lg g7 speaker is over 110db loud , screen has over 1020 nits.. etc

Everytime I read about the G7 ThinQ, I always say to myself that this phone is remarkably boring. It's just a run of the mill flagship among the rest. Let's not bother buying a G series and always look forward for the V series.

Rimas2, 04 Jul 2018Well, while camera performance looks disappointing at first... moreNot really... The thing is Super Bright Mode on G7 works in a completely different way as Huawei's Night Mode and thus they serve for different purposes. Super Bright Mode is simply for avoiding the underexposure at the expense of resolution, while Night Mode is more like a dynamic range enhancer + extreme low light mode depending on the scene, using multi-frame stacking to lower the noise.
Actually Super Bright Mode is more comparable to P20 Pro's regular 10MP auto mode since both uses pixel binning to lower the noise level... But in the end P20 Pro would perform better if you use right mode settings due to larger sensor size and better processing.

Well, while camera performance looks disappointing at first, even more so in low light studio setup, I'd argue that f.ex. low light Super Bright outdoor camera shots are very much comparable to Huawei P20 Pro's. LG's noise reduction algorithms work quite well, actually. Wide camera shots are way better than they were. All things considered, battery life is OK for an LCD too. That being said and considering the price I would go for a V30 instead at this point in time.

Geric.770, 04 Jul 2018The wide angle camera also doesn't have OIS until now even ... moreYou don't really need OIS for the wide angle camera.
Its wideness is its own hardware stabilization.

Anonymous, 04 Jul 2018Where did you see XZ2p can do 4s? Impossible without more... moreI think I read somewhere that it can do it at a longer period of time, and I did believe it since it was a reliable source.
I forgot it already, but I guess it's not true after all, my mistake. Sorry for that hehe

Seems to be a good device, except for the battery life. With LG's track-record for updates and boot-looping devices, I wouldn't buy this is if I was looking for a new phone now.
