Xiaomi Mi A2 review

02 August 2018
The Xiaomi Mi 6X has finally gone global and we have a play date with the international Mi A2. Some big shoes it has to fill - the Mi A1 was such a well-rounded yet affordable smartphone that it would regularly feature in our review conclusions as the main alternative for a wide range of competitors. Can the Mi A2 top that?

ano, 03 Aug 2018Not really a let down since the lack of 3.5 and microSD alr... moreI am a Pokemon GO player and one thing MIUI has that any UIs dont is the ability to run 2 instances of Pokemon Go using Split-screen. While you can split screen with most devices, most will only run this specific app one at a time i.e. if you play the one part, the other will pause. Nothing special except for us Pokemon GO player.

However, MIUI has the best theme engine (or one of the best). If one is satisfied with stock icons, etc, then this wont matter.

Geric.770, 03 Aug 2018Flagship is always a flagship. GCam only enhances HDR and ... more"GCam only enhances HDR and Auto mode." - Yeah, that's the point of it's algorithm.
Modded GCam (if you followed enough XDA articles on the subject) performs just as it does on Pixel devices. Even if you shoot on Pixel with HDR off you get a mediocre picture, it's their HDR+ algorithm that makes a huge difference, and that was ported to a lot of devices that have capable Qualcomm ISP (SD82x + devices and SD 62x/65x + devices.)
Modded GCam = ported GCam, it was a mod to make it work on other devices because it was Pixel exclusive, if that made a confusion. And it does make u huge difference to a lot of devices, just visit XDA forums and see for yourself.

Anyway Samsung is still using Sony's sensors in their flagship along with their own ISOCELL sensors. It's not known what is the ratio of Sony/Samsung sensors in them but the difference in picture quality is not noticeable (if there is any). So Samsung sensors have come a long way to compete with Sony's.

Mediatek sux, 03 Aug 2018Oh no its as much as quality as you can get on that shitty ... moreNot going to get far with that attitude buddy. I am going to stop the conversation with you because you assumed I am a fanboy (I am not a fanboy of any OEM as they are all the same regarding business models and practises) therefore you won't accept the facts given to you, you would rather turn again to "fanboy" argument.
And saying that the sensor is shitty you show how much you don't have a clue about smartphone camera sensors. So, according to you, Samsung's flagship sensors are shitty. So is their picture quality, yeah, right.

Hamburger, 03 Aug 2018"Xiaomi's hacked off the microSD slot and the 3.5mm jack - ... moreHardly anyone actually cares at this point. 64 Gb is enough for apps and you can keep your photos in the cloud. Also most successful high end phones don't have them anymore, most notably the pixel 2xl, as it has many similar problems with this phone, but people buy it for its great camera, which is why people will buy this phone too

Everyone is hating on this phone, however they're probably going to end up buying it anyways, because it's just like the pixel 2 xl.
Best camera at the price ( like the pixel)
Decent screen, but nowhere near the best (like the pixel)
Decent battery life, but nowhere near the best (just like the pixel)
No SD card slot or headphone jack (like the pixel)
Best fluidity and stock android at the price (like the pixel)

BrendonF, 03 Aug 2018The phone does have quick charge. They just don't bundle on... moreYes bro, i also read it in an article too. In the qualcomm website about quickcharge, it also lists the Mi 6X there so I believe that QC 3 is supported. Perhaps we just need to spend few bucks for a decent authentic fast charger with QC 3. Anyway, thanks bro for pointing it out.

Not really a let down since the lack of 3.5 and microSD already make this whole phone a deal breaker for most people, the lite version still have a hope, it has a notch but I can bear with it considering all the pros, MIUI used to be good but now it just annoyance. People who disagree show me feature that MIUI have that android dont, they already catching up with important feature, MIUI already done its job time to retire.

hello guyz this is my verdict why a2 lacks some of the useful features like headphone jack and microsd card slot.
long time ago xiaomi launch a poll in their own website which is better miui or android one...here majority votes for android one....when they seeing this they remove the poll next day....the reason behind that miui loosings its fame to android one...so if they give all the basic features in a2 then rn5pro loose its sale thats impact the miui team and also the revenue..i think thats why they remove the features like hfjack lower battery microsd slot so only ginuine android one lover buy it not the budget lover.please reply to my comment if i m wrong

I nearly tempted to get this phone because of these to factors.
                        1. 6 GB of RAM with Android One Android One meaning crazy multitasking.
                        2. Decent chipset specification, better than my Xiaomi Mi 5 in CPU but losses half of the GPU power. I dont find my Adreno 530 is the limitting factor since games like Honkai Impact doesnt get affected even if i change the GPU clock from 624 MHz to 133 MHz so i shouldn't lost any gaming performance using this phone.

                        However after reading this line....
"Some heat build up was also present with a modest amount of throttling too, but it's nowhere near the worst offenders in this respect."

I guess i have to wait more. I just want a phone with decent chipset but able to maintain specified CPU and GPU clocks at all times so the phone doesnt feel sluggish or slow.

Anonymous, 03 Aug 2018You have a point, but for most users it wont matter. Xiaomi... moreDo yo own a Mi A1? my friend next to me in work have 1 (I told her to get one, shes pretty happy with it, her older device was a old samsung with 3 year old that pretty much was useless. only worked for making calls, to slow for the rest and still on android 4.2). Updates on Mi A1 are constant and every month. Yes they have bugs sometimes..but you have pretty sure they will be corrected in the next patch. I've a HTC U11, 3.5x more expensive and I'm still on November last year patch and only with android 8 not 8.1. So I really don't know why you complain about Mi A1 updates. I wish my phone had half of those updates.

In regards of changing phones often. The people who buys cheap phones are usually people who can't afford flagships or don't see the need of them. Most likely can't afford every year a new phone or just don't see the point of it. To those people a solid phone with constant updates is the way to go. Xiaomi Mi A2 ticks those boxes. Having a last year flaghship or 2 year old flagship is a very good option also. usually you have a better deal for your money, but like i said, software updates could be an issue with older devices. I'm a software developer so I care about software updates. 1 year a team working on improving the user experience on a phone, can make a good difference. people usually neglect software and tend to watch only to hardware. usually 1/2 years later they regret their decision. I'm just pointing this thing, so people can take better decisions on their future phone.

Hamburger, 03 Aug 2018"Xiaomi's hacked off the microSD slot and the 3.5mm jack - ... moreYou can consider Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 with the HUGE 5000mAh battery that comes with the stock android experience, headphone jack, DEDICATED microsd slot, 64GB storage, Snapdragon 636 (if you're okay with that), 6GB RAM variant that comes with better cameras and Dual-Sim.

Shanti Dope, 03 Aug 2018Well it's a base standard for low budget devices now. Flags... moreIt is still not enough especially for Mi A2 that does not have a microsd slot whether you have a 64GB or a 128GB variant. Do you want to store images and videos to Google "SPYING" Drive? Wonder what Google is doing to your personal images and videos? They will send TARGETED ADs to your interest and call authorities if they deem those as "illegal" which you can do NOTHING about it. And what happens if the internal storage gets corrupted, you will lose these FOREVER if you don't back up to Google "SPYING" Drive. And what if you need to send Mi A2 to repair, do you want the service center people to take a look at your personal images and videos? With reasons like these, Mi A2 SHOULD HAVE a microsd slot in the 1st place so that for repair, personal images and videos can be stored on a microsd card can be transferred to another phone easily for CONVENIENCE sake.

Flags... morewhy upgrade to 128Gb min in flagships? so we can pay more than we need? i really hate the trend phones are taking. 6Gb RAM min is retarded, never had more than 2Gb occupied in my phone, 4Gb is more than enough. My phone have 64Gb and have more than half free. If you own a flagship, probably you will have Spotify or any other music account. so music takes 0 space. Photos I take as many i want and still don't see the end of the space in the device. Apps I install whatever I want still more space than I need. Ive 100Gb google drive account that takes care the rest. If I was retard to have 2000 apps on my phone or 50Gb of music and take 10000 photos a day, yes probably 128Gb min is needed. 99% of people will not needed, that's why there is 64Gb versions and 128Gb/256Gb version..to people that don't have a clue what is a cloud and how to use it. the worst, is people that defend it..don't own a flagship..and never will...they just like to talk about it...

Xiaomi has gotten a lot of bashing online for their slow and then faulty updates for the Mi A1.. so there is no guarantee that this will be better.
