Samsung Galaxy Watch review

10 September 2018
With its new Galaxy Watch, Samsung has combined design cues and durability from its Gear S3 and Gear Sport smartwatches while appealing to an even wider audience by making it available in two sizes and three colors. It's also embodied with new health, fitness and smartwatch capabilities. Is this enough to make it the Samsung’s most appealing smartwatch offering yet?

Until Samsung decided to fully use Wear OS, i will not bother even looking at it.

      Where is the Maps application?

Seriously Samsung - no maps app on the watch? This one of the most useful things with a smartwatch - this is one of the real cases where smartwatch beats smartphone - you don't have to hold the phone in your hand while driving or walking!

AnonD-771260, 13 Sep 2018Sure. If I wanted a big screen I would probably option for a tablet. Lots of people with smart watches have phablets that they usually keep in their backpack (same like I would with tablet).
Watch is convenient being always on your hand, but you have to engage other hand to use it and it has limited options.
Small phone can be used with single hand. And tablet beats screen size of phablet. So everything has their own utility

But phones are getting bigger and for me big screen is just nowadays. So the watch could be nice addition. I know that other people using watches much more for music, sports etc. But for sport I would still recommend wrist bands.

I bought the watch on release, everything is working great for me except two essential things.
            not getting whatsapp call notifications.
and the music app stubbornly asks to connect to the phone (in order to control the phone's media player), after several tries and resets still fails to connect.
both features were working for me on my current phone with the gear s2 :\

Until smart watches get to at least a month long (30 days) battery life using always on display (regardless of watchface used, not just those powersaving black and white watchfaces), I see no purpose wasting money on them unless you are in your senior years (or younger) that have have some health condition to monitor. Either way, still useless to waste money on an annually disposable smartwatch with sealed battery. Better get those health bands/smart bands instead. They are less bulky, battery lasts much longer, they are as good as other smartwatches in activity and health tracking abilities, and best of all, they cost so much cheaper than overpriced smartwatches that you won't have buyer's remorse if the sealed battery is dead and you would need to replace it or if the smartwatch/band does not live up to its waterproof promise.

While using with iPhone, can you answer the call and talk through the Watch using watch microphone/loudspeaker ?

naap51d, 11 Sep 2018I held off on a smartwatch until late July. The price DROP... moreYep, very similar use case - notifications on the wrist, instead of pulling out the phone. I use a flip case on the phone (since I don't like any screen protection blocking the AMOLED display), so with a paired smart watch it saves one from opening the phone to answer calls/ view texts. And when combined with a BT headset, the only reason to open up the phone is to entertain oneself via browsing/videos.

I held off on a smartwatch until late July. The price DROPPED on the S3 Frontier and I thought what the heck, let's see what all the fuss is about, ordered it from Amazon so the return would be easy. I've worn a watch for over 45 of my 58 year, including the LED watch of the 70's LOL.
I like BIG watches so the size wasn't an issue. The strap though was the first thing to go and I prefer the all in one metal band. Paired it to my android phone, except for S-voice not working, everything else did. Then a few days later, I figured out the problem with S-voice was the VPN I run on my phone was not allowing it to work, white listed the gear app, and it worked, although I just don't use it. I mainly use it for notifications from my phone, so I don't have to reach into the belt clip case to see who is calling/texting/emailing me. Nice just to look at the watch to figure out who it is. Heart rate and walking are the only other things I use it for. Created some custom watch faces with the Galaxy watch app, but I mostly use the only watch face I bought for .99 cents.
Battery life is good enough, couple days with a little left over.
Ok, now I get it...the notifications on the watch, especially when I'm involved with a machine I'm working on, not having to stop to grab the phone is worth it to me, enough to keep it.

So don't need to brag its battery life.. if your watch simply does not match up in features. Some people value features, some wants battery life, some wants formfactor.. some wants style.

A dumb watch. does not know what your phone is doing, does nothing but tells time. (Great battery life) kids Casio you can buy for 10 bucks.

A semi dumb watch. does not know what your phone is doing, however the phone knows whats its doing at a regular interval.. some features. (Semi Great battery life) -- like fitbit

A semi smart watch. knows what your phone thru its own third party app.. limited by the OS restriction. (Here is the galaxy watch, high tier garmin, or xiaomi amazfit)

A smart watch. the watch knows the phone, the phone knows the watch.. Both are integrated strongly. (Here is Wear OS / Apple Watch)

As you move up the integration, the worse the battery life. However, once its like WearOS / Apple Watch status, you can see slight battery life improvement, due to OS / software integration. And due to restriction set by the OS, you will have better app use experience.

Of course not factoring battery packs or whateva hardware gimmicks.. like always on dumb screens.

Looks like the 42mm black one won't be available here. I checked Samsung's website here and the 42mm is only available in Rose gold.
