Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018) hands-on review

13 October 2018
The world's first quad camera smartphone. Kind of has a ring to it, doesn’t it? Depending on how you tally up the snappers, that statement is true and unquestionably so, if you only consider the rear camera setup. Frankly, we can't exactly say we are too surprised. It was more or less a matter of time. But, if we had to place some predictions, our money would have definitely been on a more obscure manufacturer finally polling out the quad camera card, rather than Samsung.

Sort by:

It's a darn shame that Samsung keeps making bad decisions and yet they had so much potential.
High prices for low end devices.
No flat screen option on flagships.
Bixby ruining their flagships.
Adding multiple cameras on phone with chipset that might not be capable of handling it well.
No OIS on lots of phones camera's - including these ones with 4 rear cameras.

If they didn't screw up with these like they did, there's no way Huawei would be in top 2 by now. They would firmly dominate the market and would actually be legit threat to Apple.

    overpriced. so overpriced

In my opinion, Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018) is definitely a warming up effort before Samsung Galaxy S10. On the other hand, Galaxy A7 (2018) and the conservative one, Galaxy A8/A8+ (2018) are a Samsung's weapon to fight a lot of middle range phones. While Galaxy S8/S8+ and S9/S9+ are the weapon to fight old flagship phones.

What impresses me is how the SD660 could handle not only 3, but 4 cameras, considering it natively should support up to 2 cameras only (single 28MP or dual 13+13MP).

O S, 13 Oct 2018The flaw of your idea is that it removes the possibility fo... moreNo, bothies will surely be possible, if you open only either one camera to your front.
Open the normal cam (so it appears above the display), let the superwide remain closed (at the rear only), and you can take a bothie.
Only these 2 cameras (wide, normal) should be openable (by 180* so they appear above the display), the telephoto must remain fixed as usual at the rear.

As for waterproofing, if Samsung can claim to "seal off internal components" to make Galaxy S7 waterproof 3 years ago (!), that too with a exposed 3.5mm jack (!!), then they can do anything... so with Samsung, I'm not worried.

Moving parts, yes, is a compromise that will have to be undertaken. Quality implementation will make a difference though.... But you're right about this.
But hey, when did I say my idea's all gain no loss? It can be tried, right? :)

Make 10 cameras and i will buy it. they are such a joke OMG

At least Samsung stick to a non-notch display phone.

As expected none of these cameras were ois equipped. Probably because it's mid-ranger phone.

"The icon with a single tree means ultra wide angle cam, two trees denote the regular camera, and three trees mean the telephoto."

It should be the other way round GSMArena?

Three tree denotes ultra wide angle, two trees denotes regular, and single tree denotes telephoto.

I love having all types of camera in one phone, but putting them all in a horizontal visor like Nexus 6P or Huawei P10 will look gazillion times better.

Right so this isn't some ridiculous concept after all and that expected price is real? €600 for a mid range device... is it April Fool's Day already? Samsung have become the Apple of Android *smh*

No ois after adding 4 cameras. What is the cost of this? Would rather use the money of 4 cameras on 1 like Google or nokia 606.

cce, 13 Oct 201820 Camsphone manufacturers will find the way to get a 4 cameras in 1, joining today separated 4, in 1 place together. However models with a square 4 separated cameras design will arrive as well, meanwhile. IMHO
