Samsung Galaxy S10e review

19 March 2019
The Samsung Galaxy S10e is like a breath of fresh air in a world of behemoth smartphones with enormous displays. To be honest, we didn’t expect Samsung or any other manufacturer for that matter to release a compact flagship. Especially since even Sony dropped their compact lineup. But here it is - a small flagship phone for a little less than you’d expect from a normal flagship these days.

And the photo processing has improved with the XZ2, then the XZ2 Premium (especially low-light), the XZ3 was about the same, and now the Xperia 1 and 5 has completely revamped processing as well as a new hybrid OIS/EIS system.

George 1987, 22 Sep 2019Sony xz2 compact or s10e ? Wich phone has better camera? My advice, from practical and 2 years of use ... (I own a similar, S7) - and I have owned a ZX from Sony.

The most important real-life use differences (S7/OIS and ZX/EIS) :
    - EIS (Sony) just don't make sharp pictures - the OIS (Samsung) does!
    - The Sony heats-up, and stops working if video-recording appr. 10-20 minutes (a pain in the ass!) The Samsung doesn't do that. One big reason for this, is the immense load that the digital image-stabilization puts on the CPU & Memory-circuits/chips!

I did try the Sony-ZX for one month, and did sell it, because it just was a pain in the ass to record sharp images with it (in difficult/low light and in movement situations) ...
The past 2 years, I have been using my Samsung-S7 to record all from top-class pictures everywhere (I am a "amateur/nerd photograph, having taken 100t+ pictures, putting all my cameras to their limits) ... which is why I can tell for sure, that the Samsung handles quite well ... all the way to videos + snapshots taken/recorded in our cinema (in the dark, which the S7 handles surprisingly well - with sharp much less grainy image-quality than normally camera-expected).

One compromizing thing, to the S7: The image-stabilization in video-recordings can be problematic, in certain "long exposure, low light situations" - giving a stuttering blur (I have experienced this, in rare situations - and I think it is the video-eis-stabilization that is "tries to stabilize, but can't because the movement is bigger than what the eis can handle).

I have not regretted, that I switched to the S7 and sold the ZX-Sony .. and the S7 is also sort-of "fool-proof" ... An example is my wife, who isn't a "photographic nerd" like me - and she therefore often get lots of shaken and/or not well exposed pictures - but after she switched to S7edge, the frequency is much lower - and her pictures is quite beautiful, and she loves that she can focus on framing the right picture and experiment just a little).

Only other nag is, that the S7 camera is quite simplistic and "boring/limited", to a photo-amateur/nerd (in auto-mode) - there is nearly no buttons and settings to play with, and the camera unfortunately defaults to auto-mode, every time. I wasn't all satisfied with this in the beginning, but I then saw from experience, that this actually gives quite good pictures and I then decided to "relax" and often let the camera deal with the settings ...
If I need to, I switch to Pro-mode, but normally I just use default settings and maybe add a little composing by changing the light and focus (by touching at the screen-area that I want for reference, and then frame the object as wanted, and take the image) - with a top notch result, for a mobile-phone! (my phone-comparison here, is the Lg G2 camera, which was very good, with OIS also).

Another S7-advantage: The back-camera "takes some space" which makes the case-producers cut a bigger hole in the cover, which is nice - because then I/you don't need to manually enlarge the cover and/or colour it black, to avoid flash-foggy pictures!

Its because of the pentile matrix, a full hd screen actually looks like a hd screen, it only has the green subpixels doubled.

Compared to my old HTC 10, the S10e has worse text readability in a subjective comparison side by side with the same text size. The HTC 10 was about $100 cheaper and text readability is really important for your eyes to feel good. I didn't see this coming as the S10e have received good display quality reviews.

Optional, 11 Aug 2019But can it record 4k with wide lens?Yep, it can record 4k at 30fps with no stabilization.

Went to a shop today and tried the S10e.
It cannot record 4k 60fps with ultrawide camera and also there is no Manual Mode for the ultrawide as well.

You can't save a whatsapp photo manually in s10e and other android phone. In iphone it can be save manually. And the finger print sensor on the side of s10e is so boring as it is also screen shot button pressing with the volume button. When you try a screenshot sometimes the phone will close. This happen many times.

I currently own the Xperia XA2. Before this I had a Z3C. I'm finding the XA2 a bit dull and featureless, so I'm thinking to buy the 10e. XA2 is a great phone, but I'm looking for something thart has that "oof" factor that santds out. The 10e is a perfect form factor for me, I've tried it in a store couple of times and it is really great to use. Beacuse Sony has decided not the make compact flagships anymore and went all in with the tall 21:9 ratio I have no choice but to go to Samsung. I'm noticing that many Sony costumers who owned the compact series went to buy the S10e, which is great, but I'm still having doubts. Especially about software and Samsung bloatware that can't be disabled. I will wait till fall, if Sony doesn't something amazing with Xperia 2, 4 and 20, I'm buying the S10e or maby even the S11e.

None of the applications work offline. Bixby button is placed in a bad spot. Fingerprint scanner is the power button. Most of the Samsung made applications try to mirror your other applications in an attempt to force the use of Samsung exclusive applications. Google Calendar, etc. Google voice interface is replaced by Bixby the illiterate knock off. Text swipe is hit or miss. The phone forces all samsung applications to update without permission. Google never did that and continues to give us a choice. Did I mention none of the applications work offline? Luckily, I'm remain within the return window. I'm sending it back for the Pixel 3aXL. This phone is junk.
